Ik zie in de ontwikkeling van de menselijke samenleving, trots neerslagen en regressie, een tendens die naar steeds hoger wijst. Ik geloof aan het betere individu, zoals ik ook aan een betere gemeenschap geloof. Geloven is eigenlijk niet juist gezegd, want het zou kunnen doen veronderstellen, dat het alleen maar een wens, een verlangen uitdrukte. Neen, ik meen op grond van de uitkomsten der sociologische wetenschap te mogen vaststellen, dat er ook hier van wetmatigheid sprake is en dat wij niet behoeven te wanhopen.
Translation - English I believe unconditionally, despite all theories that claim the reverse, in the progress of mankind. I see in the development of human society, despite declines and regression, a tendency that points ever higher. I believe in the better individual, just as I believe in a better community. “Believe” is not in fact correctly put, because it could give the impression that it is only expresses a wish, a desire. No, I mean, on the basis of the findings secured by sociological science, that here too one can speak of systematicity and that we need not despair.

I received my PhD in modern European history from UC Berkeley in 2012, with a dissertation on the intellectual history of the Netherlands in the postwar period. I am broadly trained in the humanities and am especially interested in history, philosophy, and politics. I lived in Amsterdam in 2007-2008.
