Source text - Turkish Çeviri eleştirisi, zaman zaman sözü edilmekle birlikte, yöntemleri ile ölçütleri tanımlanmamış, baştan sona belirsizliklerle dolu bir alandır. Hele yazın çevirisinin eleştirisi söz konusu olunca, bu belirsizlik iyice artar. Gündelik basında, dergilerde, çeviri yapıtlarla ilgili tanıtma yazıları ile incelemeler, birtakım uluorta yargılarla işi geçiştirir hep: “Rahat okunur”, “özgün yapıta bağlı”, “yazarın sesini aktaran”, “özgününden daha güzel”, “akıcı” türünden övücü, ya da karşıt nitelikte, yerici yargılardır bunlar.
Nedir bu yargıların dayanağı? Anlamları nedir? Çeviri yapıtların böyle ele alınışında, değerlendirilmesinde gözetilen yol yordam nedir? Bu soruların yanıtı öyle pek araştırılmaz. Bir yabancı dili biraz bilen, sözlüğe bakmasını da çat pat beceren herhangi bir kimse, çeviri konusunda uzun kısa yargı yürütme yetkisini görür kendinde. (Çeviri yapma yetkisini de görebileceği gibi). Bu genelleyici, yüzeysel tutum, kendine biraz nesnellik süsü vermek isterse, falanca sözcüğün ya da deyimin çevirisi şöyle yapılmış, oysa doğrusu şudur, türünden bir yanlış avcılığına da yeltenir. Çeviri eleştirisi alanında değerlerin, ölçütlerin belirlenmemişliğinden dolayı, bulanık bir ortamda etkili de olur.
Bu durumun temelindeki neden, yazın araştırmasının öteden beri, çeviri eleştirisini kendi ilgi alanı dışında görmüş olmasıdır. En ağırbaşlı yazın kuramcıları bile, açıktan açığa ya da örtük bir biçimde, çeviriyi özgün yazın yapıtlarına oranla daha az önemli bir alan saymaktan kurtulamamışlardır. Oysa çevirinin her ulusal yazın geleneğini besleyen, yenileyen, canlandıran, vazgeçilmez bir kaynak olduğu, daha önce de açıklamaya çalıştığımız gibi, tartışma götürmez bir gerçektir. Nitekim, değişik dillerin yazınları arasındaki bir etkileşmeyi, ne hemen hemen bütün dillerde yaygın olan kötü çevirilerin kabarık sayısı, ne de yazın kuramcılarının çeviri konusuna ilgisizliği engelleyebilmiştir.
Bununla birlikte, kimi araştırmacılar, çağımızda bilimsel çevirilerle teknik çevirilerin düzeyinde bir yükseliş görülürken, yazın çevirilerinin niteliğinde sürekli bir düşüş olduğunu belirtirler (Kloepfer, 1967, s. 7). Doğrusu bilim ile tekniğin hızla ilerlediği günümüzde, bilimsel teknik metinlerin çevirisinde de birtakım ölçütlere, eleştiri ilkelerine gereksinme vardır. Bilimsel teknik kavramların her dilde kendine özgü dağılımı, türeyiş kuralları, çağdaş bilginin aktarımına yeterliği yetmezliği, incelenmeyi, irdelenmeyi gerektiren konulardır. Sözgelişi, günümüzde en hızla gelişen alanlardan biri olan bilgisayar kullanımının, her yeniliği ile Türkçe’ye kazandırılabilmesi, çok sayıda terimin türetilmesine bağlıdır. Bu bakımdan, bilgisayar alanında yeni Türkçe kavramların sayıca çokluğu, bir rastlantı ya da özenti değil, çağdaş bilgiyi özümleme çabasının en doğal sonucudur. Öte yandan, tıp, mühendislik gibi kimi alanlarda, yabancı dilden terimlerin papağanca bellenmesiyle gözü kapalı gerçekleştirilen bir bilgi aktarımı, Türkçe’de bu alanlardaki birçok çevirinin önemle üzerinde durulması gereken sorunudur. (2) R. Kloepfer’in, bilimsel teknik çevirilerinin günümüzdeki düzeyi konusundaki iyimser gözlemi, böylece, en azından, Türkçe’ye yapılan bu tür çeviriler için şimdilik geçerli değildir.
Yazın çevirilerinin düzeyindeki gerilemeye gelince, bu durumun en önemli nedenlerinden biri, bir yazın çevirisi kuramının yokluğundan dolayı, iyi çevirilerin değerlerinin, üstünlüklerinin nesnel çözümlemelerle betimlenememesi, yukarıda değindiğimiz gibi, basmakalıp övgülerle geçiştirilmesidir. Buna karşılık, başarısız bir çevirideki yetersizlikler, büyük bir kolaylıkla, yanlış-doğru mantığıyla göz önüne serilebilmektedir. Gerçekte sözlük anlamlarından yola çıkarak, bir çeviriyi kötülemekten daha kolay bir şey yoktur. Önyargıyla davranıldığı zaman, iyi bir çeviri bile bu yöntemle yerin dibine batırılabilir. Ne var ki, sözcük düzeyinde bu yanlış-doğru kovalamacası, yazın çevirisi eleştirisinde en son düşünülecek yöntemlerden biridir. Kısacası, yapıcı bir çeviri eleştirisinin yokluğu, başarılı çeviri çabalarının kıyıda bucakta kalmasına yol açar. Çeviri eleştirisi adına yürütülen yüzeysel yanlış-doğru tartışmaları da, çok çok, çeviri yapıtlara saygıyı daha da azaltmakla kalır.
Çeviri metinle özgün metnin karşılaştırılması, çeviri incelemesinde önemli bir yer tutarsa da, her böyle karşılaştırma eleştiri sayılmaz. Özellikle yazın yapıtlarının çevirisinde, çevirmen kişiliği, alılmama koşulları, dilbilimsel etkenler, göz önünde tutulması gereken yönlerdir. Yazın çevirisi, içeriğin doğrudan doğruya aktarımıyla başarılamayacağından, ister istemez yorumbilgisel bir süreç sonunda gerçekleşir.
Böylece her yazın metninin çevirisi, çevirmen yorumu ile bireysel biçeminden izler taşır. Kimi durumlarda çevirmen, çevirisinde kendi biçem ülküsünü gerçekleştirmeyi bile denemiş olabilir. Bu tür çevirilerin incelenmesinde, çeviri eleştirmenini güç bir görev bekler: “Çeviri kavramının sınırları çiğnenmiş midir?” sorusuna yanıt bulmaktır bu görev. Burada, yapıtın iki dildeki alımlanma koşulları, çeviri koşulları, çeviri okurunun beklentileri, en az kaynak dil ile çeviri dil arasındaki eşdeğerlilik ilişkileri ölçüsünde önem taşır. Özgün metin ile çeviri metnin alımlama açısından yapılacak çözümlemesinde, kaynak dilin yazın tarihine, geleneklerine, yapıtın ilk yayımlanışında tanıtma yazılarında dile gelen okur tepkisine, çevirmenin, içinde bulunduğu koşulları kavrayış çevrenine göz atmak gerekir. Dilbilimsel bakış açısı ise, iki dil arası ya da bütün dillerarası gücül eşdeğerlilik ilişkilerini karşılaştırmalı olarak incelemek, çeviri sürecindeki işlevlerini izlemek olanağını sağlar. Ayrımsal dilbilim ile dillerarası dilbilimin (Wandruszka, 1969), çözümleme yöntemleri çeviri eleştirisine bu noktada yararlı olur.
1. Kuram Yönünde Çabalar
Çevirinin bu değinilen açılardan da irdelenmesini amaçlayan yöntemli bir çeviri eleştirisinin nasıl olması gerektiği, hangi ölçütlerle işleyeceği, çeviri araştırmacılarının son yıllarda üzerinde durdukları bir konudur. A. Popoviç (1973, 1976), W. Wills (1974, 1977, 1982), K. Reiss (1971), W. Koller (1979) bu konuda, ilk elde anılabilecek araştırmacılardır.
A. Popoviç (1973), çeviri eleştirisinin, metni ilkin, hem kaynak dil hem de çeviri dili yazını bağlamında, gerek dil, gerekse yazın geleneğinin yerleşik kurallarından sapma açısından incelenmesi gerektiğini belirtir: Bir yazın yapıtı ne ölçüde geleneksel kalıpları sürdürür, ne ölçüde, yerleşik kalıplardan sapan bir özgünlük gösterir? Öte yandan eleştiri, çeviriyi çeviri olarak ele alır, özgün metinle dilsel, biçemsel yönden karşılaştırır, nesnel yanlışları saptayarak çözümler. Popoviç’e göre, eleştirinin üzerinde durması gereken üçüncü nokta ise, çeviri metnin alımlanma koşullarıdır.
Daha sonraki bir başka çalışmasında A. Popoviç (1976, s. 2), biraz değişik bir sıralamayla, çeviri eleştirisinin, yapıta temel yaklaşım yollarını şöyle niteler:
1. Okur bakış açısından çevirinin değerlendirilmesi.
2. Çevirinin özgünüyle, özgün metindeki düşünsel estetik değerlerin çeviride gerçekleşip gerçekleşmediği açısından karşılaştırılması.
3. Çevirinin, alıcı dil yazını bağlamındaki düşünsel estetik yerinin saptanması.
A. Popoviç’in görüşlerinde, genel çeviri eleştirisine önemli katkı sayılabilecek yönleri W. Koller (1979, s. 197) şöyle saptar:
1. Eleştirinin, çeviri metni, hem kaynak dil yazını hem de çeviri dil yazını içindeki konumuna yerleştirerek, çeviri okuru açısından da ele alması.
2. Kaynak metin ile çeviri metnin biçemsel açıdan çözümlenerek, dilsel biçemsel açıdan karşılaştırılması.
3. Yanlışları saptamanın, çeviri eleştirisinin ancak tek bir yönünü oluşturması.
Çeviri eleştirisini metnin işlevi, metin kuruluşu, metnin alımlanması gibi etkenlerin bir incelenişi olarak gören W. Wills ise, eleştiride nesnellik sorunuyla ilgilenir daha çok (1977, s. 279-296; 1982, s. 216-227). Somut bilgi taşıyan düzanlamlı metinlerin çevirisinde, içeriksel bir eşdeğerlilik ağır bastığından, bu tür çeviriye yönelik eleştiri de, metinde kendine oldukça sağlam, nesnel dayanaklar, ölçütler bulabilir. Kendine özgü bir biçem gösteren, yananlamlarla, çağrışımlarla etki kazanan yazın metinlerinin çevirisinde ise, öznel yorumbilgisel etkenler öyle ağır basar ki, eleştirmenin nesnel ölçütlere dayanabilmesi güçleşir. Bu düşünceyle Wills, kaynak metin ile çeviri metin arasındaki içeriksel bağların çözümlenmesine yönelmekten daha çok, doğrudan doğruya amaç dildeki çeviri metinden geliştirir eleştiri ilkelerini.
Translation - English TRANSLATION CRITICISM
Mentioned from time to time, translation criticism is a field full of ambiguities and its methods and criteria have not been defined. Especially when it comes to literary translation criticism, these ambiguities increase dramatically. Blurbs and reviews in daily press and magazines regarding translated literary works slur over translations with certain reckless and flattering comments such as: “Easy reading”, “faithful to the original work”, “transmitting the message of the author”, “better than the original one”, “fluent” or with unflattering comments contrary to the above.
What is the basis for these comments? What do they mean? What is the strategy to follow while translation works are handled and evaluated this way? Answers to these questions are not frequently sought. Someone with a little knowledge of foreign language or someone hardly capable of looking up in a dictionary considers he/she has the authority to make a rough and ready comment (just as he/she would have the authority to translate). If this generic and superficial attitude of a critic wants to pretend to be a bit objective, it attempts error hunting by stating that a word or an idiom is translated that way but should be translated this way. As norms and criteria of the field of translation criticism have not been established, these kinds of criticism turn out to be successful in this vague atmosphere.
The primary reason of this situation is that literary studies have considered translation criticism to be out of their area of interest since before now. Even most dignified literary theorists could not keep translation from being regarded, publicly or implicitly, as a subordinate field to original literary works. However, as we also tried to explain before, it is a truth beyond doubt that translation is an indispensable source of fostering, restoring, and accelerating each national tradition of literature. Thus, neither the vast number of bad translations common nearly in all languages nor the indifference to translation issue literary theorists show has hampered any interaction between literatures of different languages.
In addition to this, some researchers state that in this day and time while there is a rise at the level of scientific and technical translation, there is a constant decline at the quality of literary translations (Kloepfer, 1967, p. 7). Indeed, science and technique advance rapidly in our day and there is a need for certain criteria and principles of criticism to translate scientific and technical texts. Unique distribution of scientific technical concepts in each language, their rules of derivation and whether they are sufficient to transmit contemporary knowledge are among the subjects to be studied. For instance, introducing computer usage, which is one of the most quickly advancing fields today, into Turkish with its all innovations depends on the derivation of many terms in Turkish. In this regard, the high number of new Turkish terms in the field of computer is not a coincidence or pretension, but is the corollary of the effort to internalize contemporary knowledge. On the other hand, in the fields such as medicine and engineering, information transfer practiced blindfolded by memorizing foreign terms like a parrot is the problem worth stressing for many translations in these fields in Turkish. Thus R. Kloepfer’s optimistic observation about the current level of scientific technical translations are not valid for the moment, at least, for such translations into Turkish.
As for the decline in the level of literary translations, one of the most significant reasons of this situation is that due to lack of a theory of literary translation, values, and superiorities of good translations cannot be described with objective analyses and are slurred over with stereotyped compliments, as mentioned above. On the contrary, deficiencies in an ineffective translation can be displayed with the false-true sense with great convenience. In fact, there is nothing easier than reviling a translation considering lexical meanings. When treated with prejudices, even a good translation can be humiliated with this method. However this false-true hunting on word level is one of the last methods to apply in literary translation criticism. In brief, lack of constructive translation criticism causes successful translation attempts to stay in odd corners. Superficial false-true discussions conducted in the name of translation criticism just make literary works lost more respect.
Although comparative analysis between translated text and original text takes an important place in translation analysis, each such comparison is not counted as criticism. Especially in the translation of literary works, translator’s personality, conditions of reception, linguistics factors are the points to be considered. Since literary translation cannot be accomplished by transmitting the content directly, a hermeneutical process inevitably occurs at the end.
Thus translation of each literary work bears traces of interpretation and individual style of the translator. In some situations, even the translator may have tried his/her own ideal of style in the translation. While studying such translations, a hard task awaits translation critic: this task is to find an answer to the question of “Are the boundaries of the concept of translation violated?” Here conditions of the reception of the work in two languages, conditions of translation, and expectations of readers of the translation matter as much as the equivalent relationship between the source and the target language at least. In the analysis between original text and translated text in terms of reception, the literary history of the source language and its traditions, reader reactions mentioned in blurbs in the first publication of the work, the translator’s horizon of perception, the conditions he/she experiences must be taken into consideration. As for the linguistic perspective, it enables studying virtual relations of equivalency between two languages or all languages comparatively and monitoring their functions in the process of translation. Methods of analysis in contrastive linguistics and cross language linguistics (Wandruszka, 1969) benefit translation criticism at this point.
1. Struggles For Theory
How a methodological translation criticism that aims to examine translation also from the above perspectives should be, with which standards it will function are the subjects translation researchers have put emphasis on in recent years. A. Popoviç (1973, 1976), W. Wills (1974, 1977, 1982), K. Reiss (1971), W. Koller (1979) are the first researchers to come to mind in this subject.
A. Popoviç (1973) states that translation criticism should study both the source and target texts in terms of violation from the fundamental rules of both linguistic and literary traditions: To what extent a literary work maintains traditional models and to what extent it shows authenticity violating fundamental models? On the other hand, criticism approaches translation as a translation, compares it with original text in linguistic and stylistic terms, determines objective errors and analyses them. According to Popoviç, the third point criticism should put emphasis on is the conditions of the reception of translated text.
In another research, A. Popoviç (1976, p. 2) describes basic ways of translation criticism in approaching a work with a slightly different sequence:
1. Assessment of translation from the reader’s perspective.
2. Evaluating whether intellectual and aesthetic values in source and target texts occurred within translation or not.
3. Determining the intellectual and aesthetic place of translation within the context of the literature of recipient language.
W. Koller (1979, p. 197) identifies the aspects from A. Popoviç’s conceptions contributing to general translation criticism in a significant way as such:
1. Criticism’s dealing with translated text also from the point of the reader of the translation by placing the translated text in its position both in the literature of the source language and in the literature of target language.
2. Comparison of the source text and the target text in terms of linguistic-stylistic perspective by analysing them in terms of stylistic perspective.
3. Determining the errors constitutes just one part of translation criticism.
Regarding translation criticism as the analysis of the factors such as function of the text, formation of the text, reception of the text W. Wills pays more attention to the problem of objectivity in criticism. (1977, p. 279-296; 1982, p. 216-227) As contextual equivalency dominates in the translation of literal texts bearing concrete information, criticism intended for such translation may find itself highly concrete and objective basis and standards within the text. As for the translation of literary texts indicating a distinctive style and gaining impact with connotations and associations, subjective hermeneutical factors have such a strong influence that it grows difficult for the critic to rely on objective standards. With this in mind Wills develops his principles directly with regard to the translated text in target language rather than tending towards analysing contextual relations between source text and translated text.

Source text - English "Come on," said Vic. "It'll be great."
"No, it won't," I said, although I'd lost this fight hours ago, and I knew it.
"It'll be brilliant," said Vic, for the hundredth time. "Girls! Girls! Girls!" He grinned with white teeth.
We both attended an all-boys' school in south London. While it would be a lie to say that we had no experience with girls -- Vic seemed to have had many girlfriends, while I had kissed three of my sister's friends -- it would, I think, be perfectly true to say that we both chiefly spoke to, interacted with, and only truly understood, other boys. Well, I did, anyway. It's hard to speak for someone else, and I've not seen Vic for thirty years. I'm not sure that I would know what to say to him now if I did.
We were walking the backstreets that used to twine in a grimy maze behind East Croydon station -- a friend had told Vic about a party, and Vic was determined to go whether I liked it or not, and I didn't. But my parents were away that week at a conference, and I was Vic's guest at his house, so I was trailing along beside him.
"It'll be the same as it always is," I said. "After an hour you'll be off somewhere snogging the prettiest girl at the party, and I'll be in the kitchen listening to somebody's mum going on about politics or poetry or something."
"You just have to talk to them," he said. "I think it's probably that road at the end here." He gestured cheerfully, swinging the bag with the bottle in it.
"Don't you know?"
"Alison gave me directions and I wrote them on a bit of paper, but I left it on the hall table. S'okay. I can find it."
"How?" Hope welled slowly up inside me.
"We walk down the road," he said, as if speaking to an idiot child. "And we look for the party. Easy."
I looked, but saw no party: just narrow houses with rusting cars or bikes in their concreted front gardens; and the dusty glass fronts of newsagents, which smelled of alien spices and sold everything from birthday cards and secondhand comics to the kind of magazines that were so pornographic that they were sold already sealed in plastic bags. I had been there when Vic had slipped one of those magazines beneath his sweater, but the owner caught him on the pavement outside and made him give it back.
We reached the end of the road and turned into a narrow street of terraced houses. Everything looked very still and empty in the Summer's evening. "It's all right for you," I said. "They fancy you. You don't actually have to talk to them." It was true: one urchin grin from Vic and he could have his pick of the room.
"Nah. S'not like that. You've just got to talk."
The times I had kissed my sister's friends I had not spoken to them. They had been around while my sister was off doing something elsewhere, and they had drifted into my orbit, and so I had kissed them. I do not remember any talking. I did not know what to say to girls, and I told him so.
They're just girls," said Vic. "They don't come from another planet."
As we followed the curve of the road around, my hopes that the party would prove unfindable began to fade: a low pulsing noise, music muffled by walls and doors, could be heard from a house up ahead. It was eight in the evening, not that early if you aren't yet sixteen, and we weren't. Not quite.
I had parents who liked to know where I was, but I don't think Vic's parents cared that much. He was the youngest of five boys. That in itself seemed magical to me: I merely had two sisters, both younger than I was, and I felt both unique and lonely. I had wanted a brother as far back as I could remember. When I turned thirteen, I stopped wishing on falling stars or first stars, but back when I did, a brother was what I had wished for.
We went up the garden path, crazy paving leading us past a hedge and a solitary rosebush to a pebble- dashed facade. We rang the doorbell, and the door was opened by a girl. I could not have told you how old she was, which was one of the things about girls I had begun to hate: when you start out as kids you're just boys and girls, going through time at the same speed, and you're all five, or seven, or eleven, together. And then one day there's a lurch and the girls just sort of sprint off into the future ahead of you, and they know all about everything, and they have periods and breasts and makeup and God-only-knew-what-else -- for I certainly didn't. The diagrams in biology textbooks were no substitute for being, in a very real sense, young adults. And the girls of our age were.
Vic and I weren't young adults, and I was beginning to suspect that even when I started needing to shave every day, instead of once every couple of weeks, I would still be way behind.
The girl said, "Hello?"
Vic said, "We're friends of Alison's." We had met Alison, all freckles and orange hair and a wicked smile, in Hamburg, on a German exchange. The exchange organizers had sent some girls with us, from a local girls' school, to balance the sexes. The girls, our age, more or less, were raucous and funny, and had more or less adult boyfriends with cars and jobs and motorbikes and -- in the case of one girl with crooked teeth and a raccoon coat, who spoke to me about it sadly at the end of a party in Hamburg, in, of course, the kitchen -- a wife and kids.
"She isn't here," said the girl at the door. "No Alison."
"Not to worry," said Vic, with an easy grin. "I'm Vic. This is Enn." A beat, and then the girl smiled back at him. Vic had a bottle of white wine in a plastic bag, removed from his parents' kitchen cabinet. "Where should I put this, then?"
She stood out of the way, letting us enter. "There's a kitchen in the back," she said. "Put it on the table there, with the other bottles." She had golden, wavy hair, and she was very beautiful. The hall was dim in the twilight, but I could see that she was beautiful.
"What's your name, then?" said Vic.
She told him it was Stella, and he grinned his crooked white grin and told her that that had to be the prettiest name he had ever heard. Smooth bastard. And what was worse was that he said it like he meant it.
Vic headed back to drop off the wine in the kitchen, and I looked into the front room, where the music was coming from. There were people dancing in there. Stella walked in, and she started to dance, swaying to the music all alone, and I watched her.
This was during the early days of punk. On our own record players we would play the Adverts and the Jam, the Stranglers and the Clash and the Sex Pistols. At other people's parties you'd hear ELO or 10cc or even Roxy Music. Maybe some Bowie, if you were lucky. During the German exchange, the only LP that we had all been able to agree on was Neil Young's Harvest, and his song "Heart of Gold" had threaded through the trip like a refrain: I crossed the ocean for a heart of gold. . . .
The music playing in that front room wasn't anything I recognized.
It sounded a bit like a German electronic pop group called Kraftwerk, and a bit like an LP I'd been given for my last birthday, of strange sounds made by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. The music had a beat, though, and the half- dozen girls in that room were moving gently to it, although I only looked at Stella. She shone.
Vic pushed past me, into the room. He was holding a can of lager. "There's booze back in the kitchen," he told me. He wandered over to Stella and he began to talk to her. I couldn't hear what they were saying over the music, but I knew that there was no room for me in that conversation.
I didn't like beer, not back then. I went off to see if there was something I wanted to drink. On the kitchen table stood a large bottle of Coca-Cola, and I poured myself a plastic tumblerful, and I didn't dare say anything to the pair of girls who were talking in the underlit kitchen. They were animated and utterly lovely. Each of them had very black skin and glossy hair and movie star clothes, and their accents were foreign, and each of them was out of my league.
I wandered, Coke in hand.
The house was deeper than it looked, larger and more complex than the two- up two- down model I had imagined. The rooms were underlit -- I doubt there was a bulb of more than 40 watts in the building -- and each room I went into was inhabited: in my memory, inhabited only by girls. I did not go upstairs.
A girl was the only occupant of the conservatory. Her hair was so fair it was white, and long, and straight, and she sat at the glass-topped table, her hands clasped together, staring at the garden outside, and the gathering dusk. She seemed wistful.
"Do you mind if I sit here?" I asked, gesturing with my cup. She shook her head, and then followed it up with a shrug, to indicate that it was all the same to her. I sat down.
Vic walked past the conservatory door. He was talking to Stella, but he looked in at me, sitting at the table, wrapped in shyness and awkwardness, and he opened and closed his hand in a parody of a speaking mouth. Talk. Right.
"Are you from around here?" I asked the girl.
She shook her head. She wore a low-cut silvery top, and I tried not to stare at the swell of her breasts.
I said, "What's your name? I'm Enn."
"Wain's Wain," she said, or something that sounded like it. "I'm a second."
"That's uh. That's a different name."
She fixed me with huge, liquid eyes. "It indicates that my progenitor was also Wain, and that I am obliged to report back to her. I may not breed."
"Ah. Well. Bit early for that anyway, isn't it?"
She unclasped her hands, raised them above the table, spread her fingers. "You see?" The little finger on her left hand was crooked, and it bifurcated at the top, splitting into two smaller fingertips. A minor deformity. "When I was finished a decision was needed. Would I be retained, or eliminated? I was fortunate that the decision was with me. Now, I travel, while my more perfect sisters remain at home in stasis. They were firsts. I am a second.
Soon I must return to Wain, and tell her all I have seen. All my impressions of this place of yours."
"I don't actually live in Croydon," I said. "I don't come from here." I wondered if she was American. I had no idea what she was talking about.
"As you say," she agreed, "neither of us comes from here." She folded her six- fingered left hand beneath her right, as if tucking it out of sight. "I had expected it to be bigger, and cleaner, and more colorful. But still, it is a jewel."
She yawned, covered her mouth with her right hand, only for a moment, before it was back on the table again. "I grow weary of the journeying, and I wish sometimes that it would end. On a street in Rio at Carnival, I saw them on a bridge, golden and tall and insect-eyed and winged, and elated I almost ran to greet them, before I saw that they were only people in costumes. I said to Hola Colt, 'Why do they try so hard to look like us?' and Hola Colt replied, 'Because they hate themselves, all shades of pink and brown, and so small.' It is what I experience, even me, and I am not grown. It is like a world of children, or of elves." Then she smiled, and said, "It was a good thing they could not any of them see Hola Colt."
"Um," I said, "do you want to dance?"
She shook her head immediately. "It is not permitted," she said. "I can do nothing that might cause damage to property. I am Wain's."
"Would you like something to drink, then?"
"Water," she said.
I went back to the kitchen and poured myself another Coke, and filled a cup with water from the tap. From the kitchen back to the hall, and from there into the conservatory, but now it was quite empty.
I wondered if the girl had gone to the toilet, and if she might change her mind about dancing later. I walked back to the front room and stared in. The place was filling up. There were more girls dancing, and several lads I didn't know, who looked a few years older than me and Vic. The lads and the girls all kept their distance, but Vic was holding Stella's hand as they danced, and when the song ended he put an arm around her, casually, almost proprietorially, to make sure that nobody else cut in.
I wondered if the girl I had been talking to in the conservatory was now upstairs, as she did not appear to be on the ground floor.
I walked into the living room, which was across the hall from the room where the people were dancing, and I sat down on the sofa. There was a girl sitting there already. She had dark hair, cut short and spiky, and a nervous manner.
Talk, I thought. "Um, this mug of water's going spare," I told her, "if you want it?"
She nodded, and reached out her hand and took the mug, extremely carefully, as if she were unused to taking things, as if she could trust neither her vision nor her hands.
"I love being a tourist," she said, and smiled hesitantly. She had a gap between her two front teeth, and she sipped the tap water as if she were an adult sipping a fine wine. "The last tour, we went to sun, and we swam in sunfire pools with the whales. We heard their histories and we shivered in the chill of the outer places, then we swam deepward where the heat churned and comforted us.
I wanted to go back. This time, I wanted it. There was so much I had not seen. Instead we came to world. Do you like it?"
"Like what?"
She gestured vaguely to the room -- the sofa, the armchairs, the curtains, the unused gas fire.
"It's all right, I suppose."
"I told them I did not wish to visit world," she said. "My parent-teacher was unimpressed. 'You will have much to learn,' it told me. I said, 'I could learn more in sun, again. Or in the deeps. Jessa spun webs between galaxies. I want to do that.'
"But there was no reasoning with it, and I came to world. Parent-teacher engulfed me, and I was here, embodied in a decaying lump of meat hanging on a frame of calcium. As I incarnated I felt things deep inside me, fluttering and pumping and squishing. It was my first experience with pushing air through the mouth, vibrating the vocal cords on the way, and I used it to tell parent-teacher that I wished that I would die, which it acknowledged was the inevitable exit strategy from world."
There were black worry beads wrapped around her wrist, and she fiddled with them as she spoke. "But knowledge is there, in the meat," she said, "and I am resolved to learn from it."
We were sitting close at the center of the sofa now. I decided I should put an arm around her, but casually. I would extend my arm along the back of the sofa and eventually sort of creep it down, almost imperceptibly, until it was touching her. She said, "The thing with the liquid in the eyes, when the world blurs. Nobody told me, and I still do not understand. I have touched the folds of the Whisper and pulsed and flown with the tachyon swans, and I still do not understand."
She wasn't the prettiest girl there, but she seemed nice enough, and she was a girl, anyway. I let my arm slide down a little, tentatively, so that it made contact with her back, and she did not tell me to take it away.
Vic called to me then, from the doorway. He was standing with his arm around Stella, protectively, waving at me. I tried to let him know, by shaking my head, that I was onto something, but he called my name and, reluctantly, I got up from the sofa and walked over to the door. "What?"
"Er. Look. The party," said Vic, apologetically. "It's not the one I thought it was. I've been talking to Stella and I figured it out. Well, she sort of explained it to me. We're at a different party."
"Christ. Are we in trouble? Do we have to go?"
Stella shook her head. He leaned down and kissed her, gently, on the lips. "You're just happy to have me here, aren't you darlin'?"
"You know I am," she told him.
He looked from her back to me, and he smiled his white smile: roguish, lovable, a little bit Artful Dodger, a little bit wide- boy Prince Charming. "Don't worry. They're all tourists here anyway. It's a foreign exchange thing, innit? Like when we all went to Germany."
"It is?"
"Enn. You got to talk to them. And that means you got to listen to them, too. You understand?"
"I did. I already talked to a couple of them."
"You getting anywhere?"
"I was till you called me over."
"Sorry about that. Look, I just wanted to fill you in. Right?"
And he patted my arm and he walked away with Stella. Then, together, the two of them went up the stairs.
Understand me, all the girls at that party, in the twilight, were lovely; they all had perfect faces but, more important than that, they had whatever strangeness of proportion, of oddness or humanity it is that makes a beauty something more than a shop window dummy.
Stella was the most lovely of any of them, but she, of course, was Vic's, and they were going upstairs together, and that was just how things would always be.
There were several people now sitting on the sofa, talking to the gap- toothed girl. Someone told a joke, and they all laughed. I would have had to push my way in there to sit next to her again, and it didn't look like she was expecting me back, or cared that I had gone, so I wandered out into the hall. I glanced in at the dancers, and found myself wondering where the music was coming from. I couldn't see a record player or speakers.
From the hall I walked back to the kitchen.
Kitchens are good at parties. You never need an excuse to be there, and, on the good side, at this party I couldn't see any signs of someone's mum. I inspected the various bottles and cans on the kitchen table, then I poured a half an inch of Pernod into the bottom of my plastic cup, which I filled to the top with Coke. I dropped in a couple of ice cubes and took a sip, relishing the sweet-shop tang of the drink.
"What's that you're drinking?" A girl's voice.
"It's Pernod," I told her. "It tastes like aniseed balls, only it's alcoholic." I didn't say that I only tried it because I'd heard someone in the crowd ask for a Pernod on a live Velvet Underground LP.
"Can I have one?" I poured another Pernod, topped it off with Coke, passed it to her. Her hair was a coppery auburn, and it tumbled around her head in ringlets. It's not a hair style you see much now, but you saw it a lot back then.
"What's your name?" I asked.
"Triolet," she said.
"Pretty name," I told her, although I wasn't sure that it was. She was pretty, though.
"It's a verse form," she said, proudly. "Like me."
"You're a poem?"
She smiled, and looked down and away, perhaps bashfully. Her profile was almost flat -- a perfect Grecian nose that came down from her forehead in a straight line. We did Antigone in the school theater the previous year. I was the messenger who brings Creon the news of Antigone's death. We wore half-masks that made us look like that. I thought of that play, looking at her face, in the kitchen, and I thought of Barry Smith's drawings of women in the Conan comics: five years later I would have thought of the Pre-Raphaelites, of Jane Morris and Lizzie Siddall. But I was only fifteen then.
"You're a poem?" I repeated.
She chewed her lower lip. "If you want. I am a poem, or I am a pattern, or a race of people whose world was swallowed by the sea."
"Isn't it hard to be three things at the same time?"
"What's your name?"
"Enn."
"So you are Enn," she said. "And you are a male. And you are a biped. Is it hard to be three things at the same time?"
"But they aren't different things. I mean, they aren't contradictory." It was a word I had read many times but never said aloud before that night, and I put the stresses in the wrong places. Contradictory.
She wore a thin dress made of a white, silky fabric. Her eyes were a pale green, a color that would now make me think of tinted contact lenses; but this was thirty years ago; things were different then. I remember wondering about Vic and Stella, upstairs. By now, I was sure that they were in one of the bedrooms, and I envied Vic so much it almost hurt.
Still, I was talking to this girl, even if we were talking nonsense, even if her name wasn't really Triolet (my generation had not been given hippie names: all the Rainbows and the Sunshines and the Moons, they were only six, seven, eight years old back then). She said, "We knew that it would soon be over, and so we put it all into a poem, to tell the universe who we were, and why we were here, and what we said and did and thought and dreamed and yearned for. We wrapped our dreams in words and patterned the words so that they would live forever, unforgettable. Then we sent the poem as a pattern of flux, to wait in the heart of a star, beaming out its message in pulses and bursts and fuzzes across the electromagnetic spectrum, until the time when, on worlds a thousand sun systems distant, the pattern would be decoded and read, and it would become a poem once again."
"And then what happened?"
She looked at me with her green eyes, and it was as if she stared out at me from her own Antigone half-mask; but as if her pale green eyes were just a different, deeper, part of the mask. "You cannot hear a poem without it changing you," she told me. "They heard it, and it colonized them. It inherited them and it inhabited them, its rhythms becoming part of the way that they thought; its images permanently transmuting their metaphors; its verses, its outlook, its aspirations becoming their lives. Within a generation their children would be born already knowing the poem, and, sooner rather than later, as these things go, there were no more children born. There was no need for them, not any longer. There was only a poem, which took flesh and walked and spread itself across the vastness of the known."
I edged closer to her, so I could feel my leg pressing against hers
She seemed to welcome it: she put her hand on my arm, affectionately, and I felt a smile spreading across my face.
"There are places that we are welcomed," said Triolet, "and places where we are regarded as a noxious weed, or as a disease, something immediately to be quarantined and eliminated. But where does contagion end and art begin?"
"I don't know," I said, still smiling. I could hear the unfamiliar music as it pulsed and scattered and boomed in the front room.
She leaned into me then and -- I suppose it was a kiss. . . . I suppose. She pressed her lips to my lips, anyway, and then, satisfied, she pulled back, as if she had now marked me as her own.
"Would you like to hear it?" she asked, and I nodded, unsure what she was offering me, but certain that I needed anything she was willing to give me.
She began to whisper something in my ear. It's the strangest thing about poetry -- you can tell it's poetry, even if you don't speak the language. You can hear Homer's Greek without understanding a word, and you still know it's poetry. I've heard Polish poetry, and Inuit poetry, and I knew what it was without knowing. Her whisper was like that. I didn't know the language, but her words washed through me, perfect, and in my mind's eye I saw towers of glass and diamond; and people with eyes of the palest green; and, unstoppable, beneath every syllable, I could feel the relentless advance of the ocean.
Perhaps I kissed her properly. I don't remember. I know I wanted to.
And then Vic was shaking me violently. "Come on!" he was shouting. "Quickly. Come on!"
In my head I began to come back from a thousand miles away.
"Idiot. Come on. Just get a move on," he said, and he swore at me. There was fury in his voice.
For the first time that evening I recognized one of the songs being played in the front room. A sad saxophone wail followed by a cascade of liquid chords, a man's voice singing cut-up lyrics about the sons of the silent age. I wanted to stay and hear the song.
She said, "I am not finished. There is yet more of me."
"Sorry love," said Vic, but he wasn't smiling any longer. "There'll be another time," and he grabbed me by the elbow and he twisted and pulled, forcing me from the room. I did not resist. I knew from experience that Vic could beat the stuffing out me if he got it into his head to do so. He wouldn't do it unless he was upset or angry, but he was angry now.
Out into the front hall. As Vic pulled open the door, I looked back one last time, over my shoulder, hoping to see Triolet in the doorway to the kitchen, but she was not there. I saw Stella, though, at the top of the stairs. She was staring down at Vic, and I saw her face.
This all happened thirty years ago. I have forgotten much, and I will forget more, and in the end I will forget everything; yet, if I have any certainty of life beyond death, it is all wrapped up not in psalms or hymns, but in this one thing alone: I cannot believe that I will ever forget that moment, or forget the expression on Stella's face as she watched Vic hurrying away from her. Even in death I shall remember that.
Her clothes were in disarray, and there was makeup smudged across her face, and her eyes –
You wouldn't want to make a universe angry. I bet an angry universe would look at you with eyes like that.
We ran then, me and Vic, away from the party and the tourists and the twilight, ran as if a lightning storm was on our heels, a mad helter-skelter dash down the confusion of streets, threading through the maze, and we did not look back, and we did not stop until we could not breathe; and then we stopped and panted, unable to run any longer. We were in pain. I held on to a wall, and Vic threw up, hard and long, into the gutter.
He wiped his mouth.
"She wasn't a--" He stopped.
He shook his head.
Then he said, "You know . . . I think there's a thing. When you've gone as far as you dare. And if you go any further, you wouldn't be you anymore? You'd be the person who'd done that? The places you just can't go. . . . I think that happened to me tonight."
I thought I knew what he was saying. "Screw her, you mean?" I said.
He rammed a knuckle hard against my temple, and twisted it violently. I wondered if I was going to have to fight him -- and lose -- but after a moment he lowered his hand and moved away from me, making a low, gulping noise.
I looked at him curiously, and I realized that he was crying: his face was scarlet; snot and tears ran down his cheeks. Vic was sobbing in the street, as unselfconsciously and heartbreakingly as a little boy.
He walked away from me then, shoulders heaving, and he hurried down the road so he was in front of me and I could no longer see his face. I wondered what had occurred in that upstairs room to make him behave like that, to scare him so, and I could not even begin to guess.
The streetlights came on, one by one; Vic stumbled on ahead, while I trudged down the street behind him in the dusk, my feet treading out the measure of a poem that, try as I might, I could not properly remember and would never be able to repeat.

“Hadi, çok eğlenceli olacak,” dedi Vic.
“Hayır, olmayacak,” dedim bu tartışmayı saatler öncesinden kaybettiğimi bile bile.

Pis bir labirent halinde East Croydon İstasyonu’nun arkasını saran arka sokaklarda yürüyorduk – bir arkadaşı Vic’e bir partiden bahsetmişti ve Vic de bu partiye gitmeye kararlıydı benim hoşuma gitse de gitmese de, ki hoşuma gitmemişti. Baktım fakat parti görünmüyordu. Sadece beton kaplı ön bahçelerinde paslı arabalar veya bisikletler bulunan daracık evler ile yabancıların baharatları gibi kokan ve doğum günü kartları ile ikinci el mizah dergilerinden sadece plastik poşetlere konup satılabilecek türden pornografik dergilere kadar her şeyi satan gazete bayisinin tozlu vitrinleri vardı. Vic o tür dergilerden birini kazağının altına sıkıştırırken orada bulunmuştum fakat bayiinin sahibi dışarıdaki kaldırımda Vic’i yakalayıp dergisini geri almıştı.
Yolun sonuna vardık ve taraçalı evlerden oluşan dar bir caddeye saptık. Yaz akşamında her şey çok sakin ve boş görünüyordu. “Senin için sorun yok,” dedim. “Seni beğeniyorlar. Aslında onlarla konuşmana bile gerek yok.” Doğruydu: haylaz bir sırıtışla Vic ortamdaki istediği kızı tavlayabilirdi.

Kız kardeşimin arkadaşlarını öptüğüm zaman onlarla konuşmamıştım. Kız kardeşim başka bir yerde bir şeylerle meşgulken yanımdaydılar ve bana doğru sokuldular, ben de onları öptüm. Hiçbir konuşma hatırlamıyorum. Kızlara ne diyeceğimi bilmiyordum, ona da söylemiştim.
“Onlar sadece kız,” dedi Vic. “Başka bir gezegenden gelmiyorlar.”
Yolun kıvrımını takip edince partiyi bulamama ümitlerim tükenmeye başladı: hemen ilerideki evden derinden bir gürültü ile duvarlar ve kapıların boğduğu müzik sesinin geldiği duyulabiliyordu. Akşamın sekiziydi. Henüz on altısında değilsen ki biz değildik o kadar erken değildi. Pek sayılmazdı.
Nerede olduğumu bilmek isteyen anne ve babam vardı ama Vic’in anne ve babasının o kadar umursadıklarını sanmıyorum. Beş erkek çocuğun en küçüğüydü. Bunun aslında çok harika olduğunu düşünürdüm: benim sadece iki kız kardeşim vardı, ikisi de benden küçüktü ve ben kendimi hem eşsiz hem yalnız hissederdim. Hatırlayabildiğim kadarıyla bir erkek kardeş istemiştim. On üçüme bastığımda kayan yıldızlara ya da ilk yıldızlara bakarak dilek tutmayı bıraktım fakat öyle yaptığım zamanlardaki dileğim bir erkek kardeşti.
Bahçedeki yolu ve bizi çitlerin ve tek başına duran bir gül ağacının ardına dış cephesi çakıl mozaik ile kaplı binanın ön tarafına götüren parke taşların üzerinden geçtik. Zili çaldık ve bir kız kapıyı açtı. Kaç yaşında olduğunu söyleyemezdim. Kızlar hakkında nefret etmeye başladığım şeylerden birisi de buydu: çocuk olarak hayata başlayınca sadece erkek ve kızsınızdır, zamanı aynı hızda yaşarsınız ve hepiniz beş, yedi ya da on bir yaşındasınızdır. Sonra bir gün her şey değişir ve kızlar bir şekilde sizi bekleyen geleceğe koştururlar ve her şeyden haberleri vardır ve adet dönemleri, göğüsleri, makyajları ve benim bilmediğim ancak Tanrı’nın bildiği daha nelerden haberleri vardır. Biyoloji kitaplarındaki çizimler gerçek anlamda genç bir yetişkin olmanın yerini tutmazdı. Ancak bizim yaşımızdaki kızlar bu yeri tutardı.
Vic ile ben genç yetişkinler değildik ve her iki haftada bir değil de her gün tıraş olmaya ihtiyaç duymaya başladığımda bile hala çok geride kalacağımdan şüphelenmeye başlıyordum.
Kız “Merhaba?” dedi.

Öndeki odada çalan müzik tanıdık değildi.
Biraz Alman elektronik pop grubu Kraftwerk’e biraz da doğum günümde hediye edilen BBC Radiophonic Workshop tarafından hazırlanan tuhaf seslerden oluşan bir uzunçalara benziyordu. Müziğin ritmi vardı yine de. Odadaki yarım düzine kız da usulca müziğe ayak uyduruyordu ama ben yalnızca Stella’ya bakıyordum. Göz alıyordu.
Vic, beni kenara itip odaya girdi. Elinde bir kutu bira vardı. “Arkada, mutfakta cümbüş var” dedi. Stella’ya doğru yürüdü ve onunla konuşmaya başladı. Müzikten ne konuştuklarını duyamıyordum fakat o konuşmada yerim olmadığını biliyordum.
O zamanlar bira sevmezdim. İçmek isteyeceğim bir şey var mı diye bakmak için oradan ayrıldım. Mutfak masasının üzerinde büyük bir şişe Coca-Cola vardı, kendime büyük bir plastik bardak doldurdum. Loş mutfakta konuşan iki kızla konuşmaya cesaret edemedim. Çok neşeli ve inanılmaz güzeldiler. İkisinin de simsiyah cildi, parlak saçları ve film yıldızı gibi kıyafetleri vardı. Aksanları yabancıydı ve ikisi de beni aşardı.
Elimde kolayla yürüdüm.
Ev göründüğünden daha derin ve genişti ve hayal ettiğim ufak iki katlı ev modelinden daha karmaşıktı. Odalar loştu – binada 40 watt’ı aşan bir ampul var mıydı, şüpheliyim – ve girdiğim her oda doluydu: hatıralarımda, sadece kızlarla doluydu. Üst kata çıkmadım.
Cam odada bir kız tek başına duruyordu. Saçı uzun, düz ve o kadar açık renkteydi ki sanki beyazdı. Ellerini kenetlemiş bir şekilde üzeri camlı masada otururken gözleri dışarıdaki bahçeye ve kararan havaya dalmıştı. Düşünceli bir hali vardı.
Bardağımı gösterip “Oturabilir miyim?” diye sordum. Başını salladı ve ardından “Bana göre hava hoş” anlamında omuzlarını kaldırdı. Oturdum.
Vic cam odanın kapısının önünden geçti. Stella ile konuşuyordu ama bir yandan masada utangaç ve sıkıntılı bir şekilde duran bana baktı ve konuşma taklidi yapmak için elini açıp kapadı. Konuş. Hadi.
“Buralarda mı oturuyorsun?” diye sordum kıza.
Başını salladı. Dekolteli ve simli bir şey vardı üstünde. Göğüslerinin dolgunluğuna bakmamaya çalıştım.
“Adın ne? Ben Enn,” dedim.
“Wain’s Wain” dedi ya da ona benzer bir şey. “Ben ikinciyim.”
“Hım. Değişik bir isim.”
İri, buğulu gözleriyle açıkladı. “Şu anlama geliyor: beni doğuran kişi de Wain idi ve ona rapor göndermek zorundayım. Çocuk doğuramayabilirim.”
“Ah. Peki. Bunun için biraz erken, değil mi?”
Ellerini çözdü, masanın üzerine koydu ve parmaklarının arasını açtı. “Görüyor musun?” Sol elinin serçe parmağı çarpıktı ve bu, parmağın üst kısmında parmak ucunu iki ufak parçaya ayıracak şekilde çatallaşıyordu. Mutfağa geri döndüm ve kendime bir bardak kola daha doldurdum ve bir kupaya musluktan su doldurdum. Mutfaktan hole, holden de cam odaya geçtim fakat artık oda boştu.
Kız tuvalete mi gitti diye, bir de dans konusunda sonradan fikrini değiştirmiş olabilir mi diye merak ettim. Ön taraftaki odaya geri döndüm ve göz attım. Mekan gittikçe doluyordu. Dans eden kız sayısı artmıştı ve benle Vic’ten birkaç yaş daha büyük gösteren tanımadığım birkaç delikanlı vardı. Delikanlılar ve kızlar mesafelerini koruyorlardı fakat dans ederken Vic, Stella’nın elini tutuyordu ve şarkı sona erdiğinde kimsenin araya girmemesini sağlamak için gelişigüzel biçimde, neredeyse ev sahibi gibi koluyla kızı sarıyordu.
Az önce cam odada konuştuğum kız üst katta mı diye merak ettim çünkü görünüşe göre alt katta değildi.
İnsanların dans ettiği odadan holün diğer tarafında bulunan oturma odasına gittim ve kanepeye oturdum. Önceden de orada oturan bir kız vardı. Koyu renkli saçları kısa kesilmiş ve dikilmişti. Ayrıca asabi bir mizacı vardı.
Konuşsana, diye düşündüm. “Şey, bu su boşa gidecek,” dedim kıza, “İster misin?”
Başını salladı ve elini uzattı. Ardından sanki birinden bir şeyler almaya alışkın değilmiş gibi, sanki ne gözlerine ne de ellerine güvenemiyormuş gibi son derece dikkatli bir şekilde bardağı aldı.
“Turist olmayı seviyorum,” dedi ve tereddütle gülümsedi. Ön iki dişinin arasında boşluk vardı ve musluk suyunu sanki bir yetişkinin güzel bir şarabı yudumlaması gibi yudumladı. “Son turda güneşlenmeye gittik ve güneşin kavurduğu havuzlarda balinalarla beraber yüzdük. Onların hikayelerini dinledik ve dış mekanların soğuğunda ürperdik. Ardından ısının dalgalandığı ve bizi memnun ettiği derinlere yüzdük.
Geri dönmek istedim. Bu defa bunu istedim. Görmemiş olduğum çok şey vardı. Onun yerine dünyaya geldik. Burayı seviyor musun?”
“Nereyi seviyor muyum?”
Belli belirsiz odayı işaret etti – kanepeyi, koltuğu, perdeleri, kullanılmamış gaz ocağını.
“Seviyorum, sanırım.”
“Dünyaya gitmek istemediğimi söylemiştim onlara,” dedi kız. “Veli-öğretmenim umursamamıştı. 'Daha öğrenecek çok şeyin var' demişti bana. Ben de 'Güneşte daha fazlasını öğrenebilirim. Ya da derinlerde. Jessa galaksiler arasında ağ örmüştü. Ben de öyle yapmak istiyorum,” dedim.
“Fakat bu hiç mantıklı değildi ve dünyaya geldim. Veli-öğretmenim beni yuttu ve işte burada buldum kendimi, kalsiyumdan oluşan bir bedene yapışmış çürüyen bir et yığını halinde. İnsan şeklini aldıkça içimde çırpınan, kabaran ve ezilen bir şeyler hissettim. Ağzımdan nefes aldığım ilk tecrübemdi, nefesim çıkarken ses tellerimi titretmişti ve çıkan sesi veli-öğretmenime umarım ölürüm diyerek kullandım ki bu onun da takdir ettiği üzere dünyadan zorunlu kaçış stratejisiydi.”
Bileğine sarılı bir tespih vardı ve konuşurken bir yandan onunla oynuyordu. “Fakat bilgi orada işte, etin içinde,” dedi, “ve ben ondan öğrenmekle yükümlüyüm.”
Artık kanepenin neredeyse ortasında oturuyorduk. Omzuna kolumu atmam gerektiğine karar verdim fakat fark ettirmeden. Kolumu kanepenin üzerinden uzatacaktım ve sonunda bir şekilde çaktırmadan kolumu aşağı kaydıracaktım ta ki ona dokununcaya kadar. Kız “Dünya bulanıklaşınca gözlerdeki sıvı ile olan şey. Kimse bana söylemedi ve hala anlamıyorum. Fısıltı’nın kıvrımlarına dokundum ve takyon kuğularıyla uçtum ve dolaştım ama hala anlamıyorum.”
Oradaki en hoş kız değildi ama yeterince iyi görünüyordu ve kızdı neticede. Çekinerek kolumu biraz aşağı kaydırdım böylece kızın sırtına dokundum ve bana kolumu çekmemi söylemedi.
O sırada Vic beni çağırdı kapı aralığından. Korumacı bir tavırla Stella’yı sararak dikilmiş bana el sallıyordu. Başımı sallayarak bir şeyin peşinde olduğumu anlamasını sağlamaya çalıştım fakat adımla seslendi ve istemeyerek kanepeden kalktım ve kapıya yürüdüm. “Ne var?”
“Ee. Bak. Bu parti,” dedi Vic özür diler gibi. “Bu parti sandığımız parti değil. Stella ile konuşuyordum ve olayı çözdüm. Şey, bir şekilde açıkladı bana. Farklı bir partideyiz.”
“Aman Tanrım! Başımız dertte mi? Gitmemiz mi gerekiyor?”
Stella başını sağa sola salladı. Vic eğilip kızı öptü, nazikçe dudaklarından. “Burada olmamdan mutlusun, değil mi güzelim?”
“Biliyorsun mutluyum, ” dedi kız Vic’e.
Kızın arkasından dönüp bana baktı ve o beyaz sırıtışını yaptı: çapkın, sevimli, biraz Artful Dodger gibi biraz da dolandırıcı beyaz atlı prens gibi. “Takma kafana. Hepsi burada turist zaten. Bu yabancı değişim şeyi, di mi? Hepimizin Almanya’ya gittiği zaman ki gibi.”

“Enn. Onlarla konuşmak zorundasın ve bu demek oluyor ki onları dinlemek de zorundasın. Anladın mı?”

Ardından hafifçe koluma vurdu ve Stella ile uzaklaştı. Sonra ikisi beraber üst kata çıktı.
Bakın, gecenin karanlığında partideki bütün kızlar hoştu. Hepsinin mükemmel yüzleri vardı fakat daha önemlisi, bir güzelliği bir vitrin mankeninden fazlası yapan tuhaf vücut ölçülerine ve kişiliğe sahiptiler.
Stella onların en güzeliydi fakat tabi ki Vic’e aitti ve üst kata beraber çıkıyorlardı. Bu her zaman böyle olurdu.
Kanepede oturup ayrık dişli kızla konuşan bir sürü insan vardı artık. Birisi bir espri yapıyordu ve herkes gülüyordu. Kalabalığı yarıp tekrar kızın yanına oturabilirdim ama kız benim dönmemi bekliyormuş gibi ya da gitmemi kafasına takmış gibi görünmüyordu. Ben de hole doğru yürüdüm. Dansçılara göz attım ve müziğin nerden geldiğini merak etmeye başladım. Plakçalar ya da hoparlör görememiştim.
Holden mutfağa geri yürüdüm.
Partilerde mutfaklar iyidir. Orada olmak için bir bahanenizin olmasına gerek yoktur ve bu partinin iyi tarafı da herhangi birinin annesine dair bir iz görememiştim. Mutfak masasının üzerindeki birkaç şişeyi ve teneke kutuyu inceledim ve plastik bardağımın dibine biraz Pernod koyup ağzına kadar kolayla doldurdum. Bir çift buz attım ve içeceğin keskin şeker tadının zevkini çıkararak bir yudum aldım.
“İçtiğin ne?” bir kız sesi.
“Pernod,” dedim kıza. “Tadı anasonlu çikolata toplarına benziyor, ama bu alkollü.” Bunu sadece Velvet Underground’un canlı dinletisi sırasında kalabalıktan birinin Pernod istediğini duyduğum için denediğimi söylemedim.
“Bir tane alabilir miyim?” Başka bir bardağa Pernod koyup kolayla doldurdum ve kıza verdim. Saçları bakırımsı, kumraldı ve bukleler halinde başını sarıyordu. Bu zamanlarda fazla rastlayacağınız bir saç tipi değildi ama eski zamanlarda çokça görürdünüz.
“Adın ne?” diye sordum.
“Triolet,” dedi.
“Güzel isim,” dedim, öyle olduğundan emin olmadığım halde. Kız tatlıydı yine de.
“Bir şiir biçimi,” dedi gururla. “Benim gibi.”
“Sen şiir misin?”
Gülümsedi, önce yere baktı sonra bakışlarını çevirdi, belki de mahcup bir şekilde. Görünüşü neredeyse incecikti – mükemmel Yunan burnu alnından başlayıp çizgi halinde aşağı doğru geliyordu. Önceki yıl okul tiyatrosunda Antigone’u oynamıştık. Ben, Creon’a Antigone’un ölüm haberini getiren ulaktım. Böyle görünmemize yarayan yarım maskeler takmıştık. Mutfakta onun yüzüne bakarak o oyunu ve Barry Smith’in Conan karikatürlerindeki kadın çizimlerini düşündüm: beş yıl sonra Ön-Rafaellocuları, Jane Morris’i ve Lizzie Siddall’ı düşünüyor olacağım. Fakat o zamanlar sadece on beş yaşındaydım.
“Sen şiir misin?” diye tekrarladım.

“Ama bunlar farklı şeyler değil ki. Yani bunlar çelişkili değil.” Daha önce çok kez okuduğum bir sözcüktü fakat o geceden önce hiç sesli söylememiştim ve vurguları yanlış yerlerde söyledim. Çelişkili.
Beyaz, ipeksi bir kumaştan yapılmış ince bir kıyafet vardı üzerinde. Gözleri donuk yeşildi. Bu renk, renkli kontakt lensleri hatırlatırdı bana fakat bu otuz yıl önceydi, her şey farklıydı o zamanlar. Üst kattaki Vic ve Stella’yı merak ettiğimi hatırlıyorum. Şimdiye kadar emindim ki yatak odalarından birindeydiler ve ben Vic’i o kadar kıskanmıştım ki neredeyse canım acıyordu.

“Ya sonra ne oldu?”
Yeşil gözleriyle bana baktı ve bunu kendi Antigone yarı maskesinden beni süzermiş gibi yaptı, fakat sanki donuk yeşil gözleri bu maskenin farklı, daha derin bir kısmını oluşturuyordu. “Seni değiştirmediği sürece bir şiiri duyamazsın,” dedi kız. “Onlar şiiri duydu ve şiir onları sömürgeleştirdi. Onlarla kan bağı kurdu ve onların içinde yaşadı, şiirin vezinleri düşünce biçimlerinin bir parçası haline geldi; şiirin akıllarında uyandırdıkları onların metaforlarını kalıcı olarak değiştirdi; şiirin dizeleri, görünüşü, hedefleri yaşamları haline geldi. Bir nesil içerisinde onların çocukları bu şiiri biliyor olarak doğacaktı ve çok geçmeden, bu böyle ilerledikçe, daha fazla çocuk doğmayacaktı. Onlara ihtiyaç duyulmuyordu artık. Vücut bulmuş, gezmiş ve kendisini bilinenin sonsuzluğunun öbür tarafında duyurmuş olan sadece bir şiir vardı.”
Ona daha da yanaştım, böylece ayağımın onunkine baskı yaptığını hissedebiliyordum.
Bunu hoş karşılamış gibi görünüyordu: elini şevkatle kolumun üstüne koydu ve yüzüme bir gülümseme yayıldığını hissettim.
“Hoş karşılandığımız yerler var,” dedi Triolet, “ve zehirli bir ot gibi ya da hemen karantinaya alınıp yok edilmesi gereken bir hastalık gibi algılandığımız yerler var. Fakat nerede bulaşıcı hastalık son bulup sanat başlar?”
“Bilmiyorum,” dedim hala gülümseyerek. Ön taraftaki odada duvarları titreten, etrafa yayılan ve gümbürdeyen o alışılmadık müziği duyabiliyordum.
Sonra yana doğru üzerime eğildi ve – sanırım beni öptü … Sanırım. Dudaklarını benimkilere değdirdi, nasıl olduysa, sonra tatmin olmuş şekilde kendini geri çekti. Sanki onunmuşum gibi beni işaretlemişçesine…
“Dinlemek ister misin?” diye sordu kız ve ben bana ne teklif ettiğinden emin olmayarak fakat bana vermek isteyeceği herhangi bir şeye ihtiyacım olduğundan emin olarak evet anlamında başımı salladım.
Kulağıma bir şeyler fısıldamaya başladı. Şiirle ilgili en tuhaf şey de budur – şiirin dilini bilmesen de onun şiir olduğunu söyleyebilirsin. Tek kelime anlamasan da Homer’in Yunancasını dinleyebilirsin ve onun şiir olduğunu anlarsın. Polonya ve Eskimo dillerinde şiirler duymuştum ve bilmediğim halde ne olduğunu anlamıştım. Kızın fısıldaması da buna benziyordu. Konuştuğu dili bilmiyordum fakat kullandığı sözcükler içime işledi, mükemmeldi ve hayalimde camdan ve elmastan yapılmış kuleler; çok solgun gözlere sahip insanlar görmüştüm ve durdurulamaz şekilde, her hecenin altında, okyanusun durmaksızın yaklaştığını hissedebiliyordum.
Belki de onu tam anlamıyla öpmüştüm. Hatırlamıyorum. Biliyorum öpmek istemiştim.
Sonrasında Vic beni şiddetle sarsıyordu. “Hadi!” diye bağırıyordu. “Çabuk ol. Hadi!”
Kafamın içinde bin mil öteden geri dönmeye başladım.
“Aptal. Hadi. Acele et,” dedi ve bana küfretti. Sesi çok öfkeliydi.
O akşam ilk defa ön taraftaki odada çalınan şarkılardan birini anımsadım. Hüzünlü bir saksafon iniltisini takiben akıcı bir akor dizisi, “sons of the silent age” in sözlerini parça parça söyleyen bir erkek sesi. Kalıp, şarkıyı dinlemek istedim.
Kız, “Henüz bitirmedim. Bende daha fazlası var,” dedi.
“Üzgünüm tatlım,” dedi Vic ama artık gülümsemiyordu. “Başka zamana,” ve dirseğimden tuttu, döndürdü ve çekti ve beni odanın dışına doğru itti. Karşı koymadım. Tecrübeyle sabitti ki eğer Vic kafasına koyduysa beni eşek sudan gelinceye kadar dövebilirdi. Eğer kafası bozuk ya da sinirli değilse bunu yapmazdı ama o anda sinirliydi.
Dışarıda öndeki holdeydik. Vic kapıyı açınca mutfak kapısında Triolet’i görme umuduyla, omzumun üzerinden, son bir kez arkama baktım fakat orada değildi. Stella’yı gördüm fakat merdivenlerin yukarısında. Aşağı, Vic’e doğru bakıyordu ve onun yüzünü gördüm.
Bunların hepsi otuz yıl önce oldu. Çoğunu unuttum, daha çoğunu da unutacağım ve sonunda hepsini unutacağım; fakat ölümden sonraki yaşamın kesinliğine inanıyorsam o yaşam kasidelerden ya da ilahilerden değil fakat sadece bu şeyden oluşur: Sonsuza kadar o anı ya da Vic, Stella’dan kaçarken Stella’nın onu izlediği andaki yüz ifadesini unutacağıma inanmıyorum. Ölürken bile bunu hatırlayacağım.
Stella’nın kıyafetleri dağınıktı ve makyajı yüzüne ve gözlerine bulaşmıştı.

Ardından “Bilirsin… Bence bir şey var. Cesaret edebildiğin kadar ileri gittiğinde. Ve eğer daha ileri gidersen artık sen, sen olmazsın değil mi? Onu yapan kişi olursun? Gidemeyeceğin yerler… Sanırım bu gece o geldi başıma.”
Ne dediğini anladığımı sandım. “Boşver onu diyorsun?” dedim.

Translation - English Established in 1993 in Bayrampasa, Istanbul, Asbant started its business by acquiring distributorship of German HERMES abrasives. We moved to our own facility in Ikitelli Organized Industrial Zone in 2002 and became one of the leading companies of Turkey abrasive industry. Abrasive rolls, abrasive belts, abrasive flap wheels, sponge abrasives and wide abrasive belts are primary products we release to the sector.
Providing the sectors we offer service with products in high stock levels on time in full and processing high quality of Hermes with fully automatic machines made Asbant favorite abrasive supplier in the sector.
We moved to our new factory in Esenyurt in 2011 which enabled us to be more functional and more sensitive about worker health and environment. We are going to continue serving Turkish industry with our fully automatic production line where we can manufacture the products that our customers demand in a short time.
With its recent investments and developments, Asbant has expanded its export capacity and released its products to world markets. The emphasis we place on environment and human health begins in the process of Hermes’ production and proceeds in Asbant’s.

I graduated from the Translation and Interpreting Department of Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir and now I am a lecturer at the Applied English and Translation Department of Istanbul Gelisim University. Due to the nature of my profession and background, I have been engaged in translation for years. I have also stayed and worked in some English-speaking foreign countries.
