German to English: from: Ernst Jünger, Sprache und Körperbau General field: Art/Literary
Translation - English As such, the subject scarcely needs any justification, for it is clear that between language and body must exist a relationship of especial complexity. If one wishes to designate the mind as the composer of language, then the body is its instrument, which determines not only its phonetic, but also its rhythmic, metric and melodic forms. In speaking, as in any meaningful activity of man, it is the whole body that participates and supports the organs created for the special service. The breath, the diaphragm, the heartbeat, the circulation of the blood enliven, strengthen and penetrate the artful tool, which brings forth and pairs the sounds. The heart contributes passions, the brain thoughts.
The rhythmic tension supplies the metron, the artistic sense the euphony. The gesticulation provides the punctuation, the facial expression the definition of the message. The eye continues where the voice is silent.
Thus, where the task is to convince, be it by art, by evidence or by mere will, the whole body is speech, and every fiber, every filament a sounding string.
The immediate relationship, the interweaving of language and body, attest to the fact that the both are assigned to each other by creative power. In this sense, the body is the tool and the language the element; and the both match each other like fin and water, like eye and ray of light, like wing and air. This relationship is beyond history, even beyond time. We are endowed with language - that is, we share in that vast element that fills the world etherically, as spirit, as logos, as pneuma. Only in this way does the miracle explain itself, that we are able to say and express with words things which exceed our insight far and wide. The language feeds on the unspeakable, like the colour on the colourless.
But on the other hand, where the language becomes sensually and spiritually comprehensible, man manages it by himself with creative power. The language is the largest of his works - a carpet of worlds, whose forms, colours, ideograms and hieroglyphs are contributed not only by the genius of the peoples and by the great masters, but also by the countless unknown, nameless. The language is the strongest and oldest of all buildings - a magic castle with labyrinths and oubliettes, with observatories and halls, from whose high windows one looks far onto history and prehistory. What luck that it survived in the midst of annihilation. For in its indestructible chambers rests the whole heritage of the past. Those who are at home here will never fall for the lower, and always be bestowed and richly refreshed.
Insofar as the language is not only revelation, not only gift, but also work and expression, traits of man are imprinted in it like letters in a book. To deduce from them his development and life is as possible, as the forms of the extinct animals from the impressions in the slate.
Similarly, the human body has left traces in the language that invite to contemplation and interpretation. By following this temptation, we may, beside some finds in the realm of language, gather a profit of a higher kind.
Russian to English: from: В. Н. General field: Science Detailed field: Science (general)
Translation - English Space, being one of the elements of the mythopoetic archaic model of the world, was comprehended within the framework of this model quite different from how it appears to modern humanity under the influence of scientific views (especially after Galileo and Newton), which postulated a geometrized, homogeneous, continuous, infinitely divisible space, equal to itself in every of its parts. This "rationalized" space did not exist in the mythopoetic model of the world (as there was often no word for "space"). In the archaic model of the world, space is animated, spiritualized and qualitatively heterogeneous. It is not ideal, abstract, empty, does not precede things that fill it, but on the contrary is constituted by them. It is always full and always material; outside of things it does not exist. The embodiment of the absence of space (non-space) is chaos before the beginning of creation; in an already existing creation, the chaotic absence of space (non-space) occupies the periphery, in an opposition to cosmos, which is situated in the centre, and, finally, as remnants, not yet reworked by cosmic forces, the chaos exists inside the cosmos itself, being placed in the centre of the cosmos and surrounded by the space of the latter. Neither does the mythopoetic consciousness separate space and time. Any full description of space by primitive and archaic consciousness presupposes the definition of "here-now", and not just "here"; space and time form in this case an indissoluble unity - a chronotope. The mythology, preserved as vocabulary, confirms this conclusion by frequent examples of the designating of space, its "filling" (gods, people, animals, plants, elements of sacred topography, sacralized and mythological objects from the sphere of culture, the totality of all entities that "organize” or unify the space one way or another) and time with the same word or words of same root. A classic example of such designating is lat. orbis, "circumference", "circle", but also - "earthly circle", "world", "earth" (compare orbis terrae or terrarum; also - "region", "country", "kingdom", etc., even "heaven", "heavenly vault"); "year cycle", "year", "circular movement" (compare orbis temporum, "the cycle of time", orbis annuus, "annual turnover"), and finally, "mankind", "human race", a number of round objects and so on.
