Source text - Spanish La primera piedra del metro de Nueva York fue colocada en mayo de 1900. Se inició así una obra que ha resultado decisiva para articular una gran ciudad formada por un aluvión de irlandeses, italianos y judíos que habían llegado al Nuevo Mundo en busca de una vida mejor. Cuatro años duró la construcción de la primera línea, y desde entonces no ha dejado de ser una fuente de inspiración para artistas orgullos de su ciudad. Es el lugar donde la segregación se resquebraja. Lo usan blancos y negros, pobres y ricos, viejos y adolescentes.

Fue en 1939 cuando el músico Duke Ellington conoció al que sería su más estrecho colaborador, Billy Strayhorn. Ellington, que ya por entonces era el duque, en un viaje a Pittsburgh quedó impresionado por el talento del joven pianista Strayhorn. Le invitó a ir a Nueva York y unirse a su banda. Duke lo vio tan inseguro que le hizo un plano con todas las indicaciones para llegar hasta su casa, que estaba en Sugar Hill, el Harlem elegante de aquel entonces. Billy Strayhorn se presentó al poco tiempo en la casa Harlem pero no con las manos vacías: llevaba la partitura de una melodía que había creado inspirándose en las indicaciones del maestro. A Duke Ellington le gustó tanto aquel Take the A train (Toma el tren A) que a partir de ese momento la tocaba siempre al comienzo de sus conciertos. La melodía se convirtió en canción y no hay cantante de jazz que se precie que no la haya interpretado, aunque es la voz de Ella Fitgerald la que la hizo más popular: "Tienes que tomar el tren A / para ir a Sugar Hill en lo más alto de Harlem / Si pierdes el tren A / descubrirás que has perdido la manera más veloz de llegar a Harlem / Rápido, móntate, ahora, está viniendo / escucha esos raíles retumbando. ¡Todos al tren! / Móntate en el A / pronto estarás en Sugar Hill en Harlem". El metro de Nueva York ha servido de inspiración para muchísimas canciones, pero es esta melodía, que parece llevar la velocidad escrita en las mismas notas de su partitura, la que encarna el alma de las venas subterráneas de la ciudad.

Esa presencia se debe en gran parte a su condición indiscutible de ciudad inspiradora pero también a la marcada tendencia americana al realismo, a certificar con poemas, cuadros o novelas todo aquello que su tiempo les pone delante de los ojos. Y si Nueva York está presente en el arte popular, no se queda atrás el metro, que es el reverso de la ciudad, no menos vivo que la superficie y, por alguna razón poderosa, el lugar de donde brotan historias para no olvidar.

The first stone of the New York City subway was laid in May of 1900. It was the start of a construction that has been very important for the articulation of an immigrant city like New York, formed by an alluvium of Irish, Italian and Jews in search of a better life. The construction of the subway in New York took four years and it has never ceased being an inspiration for artists proud of their city. The subway is where the racial segregation crumbles and people from all walks of life use it where Anglos, African American, rich, poor, old and young come together.
In 1939, Duke Ellington met one of his closet collaborators, Billy Strayhorn. Ellington, already known as duke by that time, was very impressed by the talent of the young pianist. Ellington invited him to come to New York and join his band. Seeing Strayhorn as uncertain, he made a map with instructions to his house, located in Sugar Hill, an elegant Harlem neighborhood at that time. Billy arrived at Duke’s house, with his own music score inspired under the directions of Duke. Ellington enjoyed this piece of music so much that he incorporated this piece to this own repertoire at the beginning of his own concerts. Every jazz singer worth his salt has performed “Take the A train” at least once in his/her life, but is the voice of Ella Fitzgerald that made this song more popular.
The city of New York celebrated the centennial of the construction of the subway three years ago. Since the subway has shaped the form of the modern city, for any city this celebration is very important, except for New York, a city that has been very present in the work of its artist. This presence is based on its condition of being an inspirational city but also to the American tendency for realism, certified by poems, pictures or novels everything that times put in front of this city. If New York is present in the popular art scene, the subway does not remain behind, being the reverse side of the city, not less alive than its surface, and for a very powerful reason the place where unforgettable stories come alive.
In 1991, I rode for the first time the subway in New York City. At that time, even being a secure mode of transportation, I was very startled by the noise and the image of Noah’s Ark transporting all kind of humans being in their subway car.
It has been sixteen years ago since then, but even today when I ride the subway again and swipe my subway card, I have the sensation that I am paying for much more than a simple ride in a subway. It is not the feeling of an outside, because I know that for many New Yorkers (that look although it does not seem to) have the same sensation. Every time I meet somebody it is unusual not to begin a conversation asking about your experience riding the subway in the apple city. These are the stories that spice up conversation and inspire all kind of stories and songs.
