2 апреля 2014 г. Президент подписал поправки в Налоговый кодекс РФ, затрагивающие и религиозные организации. Закон снимает обязанность представлять финансовые отчеты с тех организаций, у которых в течение отчетного периода не возникало необходимости уплачивать налоги.
8 октября был принят Госдумой, а 22 октября подписан Президентом закон «О внесении изменений в статью 16 закона “О свободе совести и религиозных объединениях”». Поправки предусматривают проведение богослужений без уведомления властей не только в культовых зданиях, принадлежащих религиозным организациям, но и в местах паломничества, на территории организаций, созданных религиозными общинами, на кладбищах, в крематориях, а также в жилых помещениях. В иных местах религиозные обряды, церемонии и собрания проводятся в соответствии с нормами, установленными для проведения митингов, шествий и демонстраций.
10 октября был принят Госдумой, а 30 октября подписан Президентом закон «О внесении изменений в Федеральный закон “Об объектах культурного наследия (памятниках истории и культуры) народов Российской Федерации” и отдельные законодательные акты Российской Федерации». Инициатором этих поправок выступила Русская православная церковь. Новый закон наделяет муниципальные образования правом финансировать объекты культурного наследия, находящиеся в собственности религиозных организаций.
7 октября 2014 г. Госдума одобрила в первом чтении разработанный правительством проект поправок в Федеральный закон «О свободе совести и о религиозных объединениях». Поправки предполагают отмену утверждения 15-летнего срока существования религиозной группы для получения регистрации в качестве религиозной организации и требования к религиозным организациям ежегодно предоставлять информацию о продолжении своей деятельности. В то же время законопроект содержит нормы, ужесточающие регистрацию религиозных групп и умаляющие права местных религиозных организаций.
В декабре 2014 года Госдума одобрила в первом чтении внесенный Правительством РФ проект поправок в ст. 14 Уголовно-исполнительного кодекса (УИК) РФ, обеспечивающих право заключенных на встречи со священнослужителями своей конфессии. Законопроект обязывает администрацию исправительного учреждения предоставить помещение для встреч со священнослужителями и проведения религиозных церемоний.

On April 2, 2014 the President signed into law new amendments to the Tax Code of the Russian Federation. These affect religious organizations. Those of them that did not have to pay taxes during the reporting period are now exempt from the obligation to submit financial statements.
The law “Amending Article 16 of the Law ‘On the freedom of conscience and religious associations’” (O vnesenii izmenenii v stat'iu 16 zakona “O svobode sovesti i religioznykh ob”edineniiakh”) was ratified by the State Duma on October 8 and signed by the President on October 22. The amendments make provisions for religious services being conducted without the authorities being notified – not only in religious buildings owned by religious organizations but also at pilgrimage sites, on land belonging to religious communes, at cemeteries and crematoria, and in residential premises. Religious ceremonies and gatherings in other places fall under the regulations governing public demonstrations and processions.
The Law “Amending the Federal Law 'On the objects of cultural heritage of the peoples of the Russian Federation' and certain other legislative acts” (O vnesenii izmenenii v Federal'nii zakon “Ob ob”ektakh kul’turnogo naslediia (pamiatnikakh istorii i kul'tury) narodov Rossiiskoi Federatsii” i otdel'nye zakonodatel'nye akty Rossiiskoi Federatsii) was passed by the Duma on October 10 and signed by the President on October 30. The amendments were lobbied for by the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC). The new legislation allows municipal authorities to allocate funds to cultural heritage sites owned by religious organizations.
On October 7, 2014, the government's draft amendments to the Federal Law “On freedom of conscience and religious associations” (O svobode sovesti i religioznykh ob”edineniiakh) passed a first reading in the Duma. The tabled amendments include an abolition of the requirement that a religious group must exist for at least fifteen years before it may register as a religious organization. The requirement that religious organizations yearly provide information about their continued activity is also to be dropped. At the same time, the bill proposes a tougher registration regime for religious groups and a curtailing of the rights of local religious organizations.
In December 2014, the government's draft amendments to Article 14 of Russia's Criminal Executive Code, guaranteeing the right of inmates to meetings with a priest of their confession, passed a first reading in the Duma. The law obliges the administration of every corrective facility to provide premises where such meetings can take place and religious ceremonies be conducted.

До сих пор никто еще не узнал, в кого она влюблена: я первый открыл это. Женщина влюблена в черта… Вон, видите, из ложи первого яруса она наводит лорнет. Вы думаете, что она глядит на толстяка со звездою? Совсем нет, она глядит на черта, что у него стоит за спиною”. То, что дьявол примостился именно позади толстяка, совсем не случайно.
У старообрядцев до сих пор фиксируется представление, что бесы прячутся сзади у человека или садятся ему на плечо: “Идешь на молениё – на кромку платок надевам: плеча загороди, а то бес сидит на плече”. На тысячах средневековых: византийских, русских или западных – изображений грешниками верховодят демоны, спрятавшиеся у них за спиной. Гоголь мог видеть подобную мизансцену и в клеймах житийных икон, и на лубочных картинках.
Фигура дьявола, притаившегося за спиной у человека, – идет ли речь о книжном топосе, иконографической схеме или мифологическом представлении, бытующем вне текстов и визуальной традиции, – воплощает идею незримого присутствия и воздействия. Это чрезвычайно древний и устойчивый мотив. Например, в “Диалогах” Сульпиция Севера (IV в.) рассказывается как св. Мартин Турский увидел за спиной чиновника по имени Авициан огромного демона. Греховные мысли, желания и эмоции, овладевающие человеком, на самом деле “напущены” сатаной, которого он сам не видит. Но его видят другие. В топике житий спрятавшегося за спиной беса разоблачает святой, который, благодаря особому дару, прозревает дьявольские наваждения и разбивает коварство демонов .
На страницах лицевых житий или в клеймах житийных икон злых духов, стоящих за спинами грешников, видит уже каждый читатель или молящийся. При переводе текста на визуальный язык тайное становится явным, а психологические механизмы искушения перекодируются в пространственные отношения между фигурами.
В средневековой визуальной традиции жесты образуют язык, который, “подменяя” прямую речь и авторский комментарий, устанавливает между персонажами линии напряжения. Сакральные персонажи: Христос, ангелы или святые, – действующие во множестве библейских или агиографических сюжетов, часто изображаются строго фронтально, вне какого-либо повествовательного контекста. Эти образы, обращенные прямо к зрителю, предназначены для поклонения и устанавливают контакт между высшими силами и молящимся. В отличие от Христа или ангелов, дьявол с демонами чаще всего представляются в профиль или в три четверти и, за редкими исключениями, не в покое, а в действии и взаимодействии с другими персонажами. В устном или письменном нарративе это взаимодействие проходит не только через описание поступков, но и через прямую речь персонажей. Изображение, которое без помощи подписей (или в лицевой рукописи – параллельного текста), не в силах прямо отразить содержание речи, передает суть ситуации, а иногда и диалога с помощью мизансцены и жестов.

“Only now do I know what a woman truly is. None has hitherto known whom she truly loves; I am the first to grasp it: she loves the devil. … There, you see that one sitting in the box in the grand tier, peering through her lorgnette? You think she is eyeing the fat chap with the fancy medal? You are quite wrong; she is looking at the devil standing behind him.”
That the devil should choose to position himself behind the gentleman’s back is no accident.
To this day, among the Old Believers, there survives a belief that demons secrete themselves behind a person’s back or perch on their shoulder: “When we go to prayer, we wear headscarves edge down: cover your shoulders, else the devil sit there”. Thousands of Medieval images from Russia, the Byzantium, and Western Europe depict sinners as being ruled by a demon hidden behind their back. Gogol could have encountered this mise en scène in a lubok print or in a border scene of a hagiographic icon.
The figure of the devil lurking behind a person’s back, be it in literary commonplaces, in iconographic schemae, or in some other (non-textual, non-pictorial) expressions of a mythological world view, embodies the notion of unseen presence and control. This is an extremely ancient and stable motif. For instance, in the Dialogues of Sulpicius Severus (4th century AD), St Martin of Tours sees an enormous demon behind the back of an official by the name of Avician.
Thus, the sinful thoughts, desires, and emotions that take possession of a person are really the work of the devil whom she herself cannot see – yet others can. One hagiographic commonplace is the exposing of a demon hiding behind someone’s back by a saint whose special gift allows him to see through the satanic bewitchery and to disrupt its workings.
Of course, in the illuminated hagiographic manuscripts and in the border scenes of hagiographic icons, the evil spirits standing behind the sinners’ backs are perfectly visible to every reader and worshipper. As text is translated into image, the mysterious becomes explicit; the psychological mechanisms of temptation are recoded as spatial relationships between figures.
In the Medieval visual tradition, gestures form a distinct language. They are, in a sense, a substitute for direct speech and authorial commentary; they set up the lines of tension between characters.
The sacral characters (Christ, angels, and saints) that figure in many of the Biblical and hagiographic stories are often depicted in strict full-face view, free of any narrative context. These images, directly confronting the viewer, are intended for worship. Their purpose is to establish contact between the worshipper and the higher power.
Satan and his demons, on the other hand, are most often shown in profile or in three-quarter view, and, with some rare exceptions, not at rest but in motion – they interact with other characters. In spoken and written narratives, such interactions progress not only via the description of a character’s actions but also via direct speech. An image that cannot directly convey the content of speech without recourse to captions (or, in the case of an illuminated manuscript, parallel text) may still communicate the essence of the situation and maybe even of the dialogue via mises en scènes and character gestures.

Bio
I was born in Russia but have lived in the UK since age 11.
This year, I completed an MA in Applied Translation Studies at Leeds (pass with Distinction; specialisation: Ru>En; top marks in the year for the extended translations).
I have substantial experience translating both ways (Ru>En/En>Ru), but my preferred target language is English. The materials I have worked with have included NGO and IGO reports, legal documentation (immigration/criminal), academic texts, educational materials, computer games, and software. I also occasionally translate from Ukrainian.
Starting January 2015, I will be independently delivering a translator training program for undergraduates studying Russian at the University of Leeds. It will follow a syllabus of my own design, incorporating elements of structural and corpus linguistics as well as more traditional genre and register analysis.
I have some experience of working as an interpreter (Ru<>En). My most colourful assignment was a public debate between a Russian journalist and a Ukrainian member of BBC editorial staff (followed by a question and answer session); however, most of my work has been in a legal/immigration setting. I am happy to offer my services as a simultaneous, consecutive, or liaison interpreter.
In my earlier incarnations, I have been a fencing coach, an IT project manager, and a research scientist (specialising in condensed matter quantum-chemical calculations).
