Source text - English It can be said that, from the end of the Bronze Age until the 15th century, the evolution of warfare was more related to new ideas, thoughts, and practices, rather than scientific breakthroughs. The Greek hoplite phalanx, the roman legion system, the specialized shock cavalry of Asia and Medieval Europe: those are specialized ideas and applications utilizing bronze, steel, wood, and leather in a degree of technology that didn't change significantly over a span of almost two thousand years. However, the invention and widespread use of gunpowder will force radical changes in strategies and tactics.
Gunpowder handguns appear in European and Asian battlefields around the 13th century as clumsy support assets, but at the end of the 15th century it became absolutely clear that arquebus (and later musket) fire was not only extremely relevant, but would also dictate completely new tactics. Ranged infantry, now armed with the matchlock arquebus/musket, was able to fire accurately at ranges up to 100 meters, penetrating almost any kind of armor - something that a common archer unit was unable to do. This would greatly reduce the efficiency of head-on charges of heavy infantry and cavalry (former "kings" of the battlefield). It should be noted, though, that the general obsolescence of the archer unit was not exactly owed to the capabilities of the first handguns, but to the fact that it was much easier and faster to train efficient units of shooters rather than archers. Even though an archer could still fire farther and at a much faster rate, compared to an arquebusier, it took years of practice to use a powerful, military bow, effectively. Ease of use was also a feature of the crossbow, a popular weapon of the time, but powerful crossbows (and it's bolts) were expensive to manufacture and slow to fire.
Artillery, since the inventions of ancient greeks, was a weapon mainly intended for siege use with limited field use. Large and complex machines capable of hurling heavy projectiles against walls and city defenses would increase the chances of an attacker during a siege - often a situation where the defender held the advantage. Cannons would completely change that paradigm, since the sheer power of the new weapon could destroy walls with much more efficiency. This is one of the reasons that military fortifications from the 16th century onwards were in the new form of smaller star-forts, with angled walls with triangle-like edges, replacing the great fortifications of the middle-ages. The new idea was to deny the attacking cannons direct angles, thus deflecting some of the projectile's energy. The fall of Constantinople and Granada by the end of the 15th century are examples of the devastating efficiency of gunpowder artillery. Field artillery also changed into a more effective idea, since cannons could be made small and light enough to be transported, and had much greater range than the old ballistae, catapults, trebuchets. Artillery was bound to become a great threat to infantry and cavalry in the open field.
The new tactics took shape in the famous pike-and-shot formations, like the Spanish square, also called as tercio. Spain dominated the battlefield for over 140 years with it's massive formations of mutually protecting shooters and pikemen (among other infantry). Battles of Cerignola (1503) and Pavia (1525) are two of many examples. Continued developments in firearms and artillery throughout the 17th century showed an increased efficiency of broader lines of fire over the tercio massive square formations. Pikemen disappeared from the battlefields as the bayonet was developed, allowing musket-armed infantry greater protection against cavalry. Regarding artillery, much of Napoleon Bonaparte's success came from his mastery in the use of cannons. Being an artilleryman himself, the French general's tactics maximized the efficiency of field artillery, making it the most decisive of his three arms, not just a support asset for infantry and cavalry. Further away from European battlefields, gunpowder would remind the world of it's inevitable superiority over the old ways: during the Anglo-Zulu War, Battle of Rorke's Drift (1879) a mere 140 rifle-armed English soldiers held back an attack of 4000 African warriors, mostly armed with spears and shields.
Gunpowder will eventually be made obsolete. Experiments with accelerated particles and directed-energy weapons are underway, though it may still take a long time before we see something like laser pistols equipping armed and police forces, or available for the civil market. It is worth mentioning the new paradigm established by nuclear weapons, created directly from a new scientific breakthrough - like the discovery of gunpowder and other explosives. Nuclear weapons deeply impacted higher, strategical levels, as seen in conflicts and crisis involving nuclear-armed states after WWII. Tactically, when analyzing the basis of weapons used on battlefields today, we still live the paradigm that started to take shape more than 500 years ago - gunpowder-based weapons.

Essa é uma das razões pelas quais as fortificações militares a partir do século XVI passarem a ser no novo formato de pequenos fortes-estrela, com paredes inclinadas e vértices triangulares, subtituindo as grandes fortificações da Idade Média. A nova ideia era a de negar ângulos diretos, retos, aos canhões atacantes, defletindo, assim, um pouco da energia do projétil.
