As you know, I am a political science researcher from the University of Virginia, in the United States, conducting a study on political party development in the former Soviet Union. I want to understand why individuals in your country join different political parties and when they decide to bargain with or form coalitions with other parties. During our interview, I will ask questions about your party’s political platform, your motivations for joining the party, and your views about potential coalition partners.
I will only ask about regular parts of your work as a politician or political party member and am only interested in understanding legal political activity. If this interview discusses sensitive political activity, you or I may end the interview. I will not reveal details about you or what you say to me to anyone else, but it is possible others will find out what we have talked about. This could place you at risk of if you discuss illegal activities.
I would like to take written notes our conversation, so that I can record your words accurately. If at any time during our talk you feel uncomfortable answering a question please let me know, and you don’t have to answer it. Or, if you want to answer a question but do not want it recorded, please let me know and I will not write down your response. I will destroy any notes I have written if you decide to end our conversation.
