Source text - English ON Christmas morning I stood waiting to board an 8 a.m. flight to San Diego with Matheson and Cameron, my 14- and 12-year-old sons, in Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta.
Two years had passed since our move from Southern California to suburban Atlanta, and it had been a painful extraction, uprooting my boys from their schools and friends — all for my love of a man, Jon, who then remained entangled in his previous marriage and hesitant to forge ahead with me.
My own first marriage had dissolved nearly a decade before when my boys were little, and in Jon I knew I had found a shared future. Yet it remained stubbornly beyond my grasp.
So once again I was traveling on Christmas Day, sparing us having to endure another Christmas morning that didn’t jibe with the TV version. We were escaping to San Diego to find comfort among uncles, aunts and cousins, and in the familiar sun and sands.
While waiting to board, I spied a beautiful young woman wrangling two small boys, toddlers who looked as if they were in orbit around her, running, screaming and spinning. I guessed immediately that she was also a single mother.
People who fly on Christmas morning tend to be either those who are burning up expiring frequent flier miles, or airline personnel and their families flying in “nonrevenue” seats. Insiders know that Christmas-morning flights allow easier redemption and lighter fares — plus a one-day respite in the holiday travel rush.
But with rare exception, women flying with very small children by themselves on this morning are single mothers. Sometimes life’s circumstances are just too raw to pretend we are happily celebrating. Sometimes treating the day like an average weekday, as I was doing, is the path to take. My boys and I had spent more than one Christmas morning on an airplane.
After meeting Jon, though, I did not think we’d be doing this again. There is something relentlessly compelling about the kind of love that causes you to change your life in a way that friends insist is insane and causes your family to wince and ask, “Are you sure this is a good idea?”
Jon and I had agreed about having the boys and me move east so we all could be together and “blend” our families. But after we arrived, he balked: his divorce was still too fresh, the ex-wife boundaries were not in place, and our engagement was broken off twice.
He had only pretended to be ready so he wouldn’t lose me. And I kept pretending to be patient while he worked it out. But after two years of waiting I was readying myself to move back to San Diego. I was angry and disappointed. The holidays were supposed to be a family time, yet we still weren’t a family. I loved Jon and he loved me. But love was not conquering our blended family obstacles or making him any more ready for what I needed.
So I used up my flight miles and bolted with the boys for Christmas. I re-read the second-marriage divorce statistics to justify my decision.
In the airport terminal, the other woman’s boys looked to be about 2 and 3. For a five-hour flight, that’s a tall order. And even taller in this case, as the older boy was wearing a halo neck brace, evidence of some recent trauma requiring his cervical spine and head to be immobilized. His energy, however, was unimpaired.
On the plane, as my sons settled in with their books and portable electronics, the woman and her boys found their seats two rows behind us in 16B and C — the younger on her lap, the older in the middle seat next to a man with a look of unmitigated dread.
Both toddlers immediately started screaming. The one in the halo was loudly protesting the mandatory seat belt aspect of airline travel. The other didn’t want to sit on his mother’s lap. I knew that rodeo well. Only five more hours of screaming to go.
When we hit cruising altitude, I exchanged a knowing glance with my boys, unbuckled my seat belt, went back two rows, and offered my seat to the ashen-faced man in 16A. He looked spectacularly relieved. I wished him a merry Christmas, sat next to the woman, and offered what every mother traveling alone with small ones wants: an extra pair of hands.
Over the next three-and-a-half hours I read Dr. Seuss aloud, walked up and down (and up and down) the single aisle of a 757, first with a 3-year-old in a bulky halo, then with a 2-year-old; I amused them with hand puppets, changed diapers, doled out Goldfish crackers and bottles, and channeled every kind stranger who had done the same for me over the dozens of flights I had taken alone with my kids.
I glared down anyone who attempted to say anything unkind. God knows, I had endured the jerks who would publicly pass judgment on child-rearing skills while I held a crying infant. (For the record, no, I can’t “just keep this baby quiet” on the airplane, and you can’t, either.) Forty-five minutes from San Diego, one in her arms, one in mine, they finally both fell asleep.
I looked a few rows up, with my sons deep in their books and music, and spoke of my own single-parent challenges. I reassured her that it all turns out O.K., and that air travel does, indeed, get easier. A lot easier.
She asked me about their father.
“He moved out of their life when they were not much bigger than your sons,” I told her. “It was a slow heartbreak over time, and a family history of addiction. They see him once a year for a week, which isn’t enough. I thought they were going to have a new stepfather, but now I’m not sure I have the patience to wait any longer.”
I spoke to her about my struggles with Jon in Atlanta, about life’s messy nature and how I was uncertain I had made the right move. How I wanted him to hurry up and get it together. How angry I was that he couldn’t seem to close the deal he opened by luring us to Atlanta. And now here it is, the holidays and our incomplete, awkward family situation.
“And your sons: where is their father?” I inquired gingerly.
She spoke softy: “Six months ago, my husband was killed in a car accident. I was at home with the baby, and my older son” — she pointed to the 3-year-old with the halo — “was airlifted in critical condition from the scene. He had a broken neck and severe internal injuries. It was touch and go for a while.
“He still has a ways to go. I fly for Delta, and am on leave. I have to decide whether to keep the farm we live on in Florida, whether to get back to flying, and that’s only the beginning of it. For now, I’m taking the boys to see their aunts and uncles and my family in San Diego.”
She smiled wistfully. “You never know how quickly life can change,” she said. “The life you plan — — ” and her voice trailed off as she smiled at the sleeping boy in her lap.
MY troubles withered, I welled up letting her know how sorry I was for the difficult hand she had been dealt.
Of all the scenarios I had played out in my head for my life with or without Jon, that one wasn’t on the whiteboard. Jon was trying to find a way to love me that wouldn’t compromise his children while I was trying to find a way to love him that wouldn’t compromise mine. We had painfully wrestled over this to the point where I was just about through with the struggle. But it honestly had never occurred to me that he could be gone in an instant.
She and I both dozed for about 10 minutes, awaking to the pilot’s voice announcing our final approach into Lindbergh Field. Banking right on approach, with the Coronado Bay Bridge sunlit on my left, we wished each other merry Christmas.
I had intended to be the generous one that morning. My gift to her was an extra pair of hands to wrangle spirited toddlers trapped on a plane. But her gift to me was of the Magi order. It was the gift of perspective, of being able to step back and appreciate what I have, however frustrating. Jon loved me. I knew that. His worries about joining our families had complicated our love, not extinguished it. Struggles and patience are part of the deal.
As soon as we hit the tarmac, I dialed Jon’s number and told him I loved him. Thanks to that stranger on a plane, I discovered I had more patience and appreciation in me.
And the next year Jon and I married and finally spent Christmas morning together as a family. As we have ever since.

여자는 아이들의 아버지에 대해서 물었다.
“그 사람은 내 아이들의 나이가 댁의 아이들보다 많이 않았을 때 떠났어요.” 내가 말했다. “그 일은 천천히 찾아오는 비통함이었고, 집착의 가족사였죠. 아이들은 일년에 일주일만을 그 사람과 만날 수 있었고 그것으로는 부족했죠. 이제 겨우 새아버지가 생기겠구나 했는데 이제는 제가 더 기다릴 인내심이 있는지 확신할 수가 없네요.”

Source text - English THE nine-pound longhaired miniature dachshund at the animal shelter wasn’t the kind of dog I imagined walking in Manhattan. She was a little lap dog and a cliché, too small for someone as insecure and image conscious as me. And her name was Zoe — too cutesy. I put a deposit down on her anyway.
A form to fill out asked, “Why do you want a dog?” The answer should have been simple: companionship. But it was more complicated than that.
I always swore I’d never get a dog. In fact, I’d spent the first half of my life as a dog denigrator. Why have a needy pet with so many needy people in the world? One divorced friend has spent the last six years lounging around too intimately with a slobbering golden retriever who is as devoted to her as her ex was not. Another single woman I know thinks that if her Maltese snaps at someone she’s dating, he’s probably not right for her. (Talk about snap judgments.) I once had a date with a handsome man and his handsome Portuguese water dog who were so interested in each other they paid no attention to me.
“You don’t understand,” friends said. “Dogs are all about unconditional love.”
O.K., but what about earned love? And common sense?
When I first met Ira, who would become my spouse, he owned (or perhaps I should say was owned by) a beloved Cairn terrier that would lunge and bite whenever we tried to leave him, and would refuse to go out for walks because he hated the noisy city streets. With a push from me, Ira finally put the dog into a carrier bag and flew him off to a better life with a loving stay-at-home owner in a quieter, leafier city.
For several years it was just the two of us in our white antiseptic apartment, living our pet-free and child-free lives of stylish travel, creative careers and limited family responsibility.
Not that Ira wasn’t a handful all his own. He was often so vulnerable, voluble and, shall I say, doggedly affectionate that it scared me.
When I started saying, “I want a dog,” it was half in jest. But it became more serious as I cooed at dogs on the sidewalk, beagles in particular, while Ira shook his head.
“You have a limited amount of affection to give,” he said without irony. “If we get a dog, all your affection will go to him and there won’t be any left for me.”
Maybe he was right. I’ve always made it a goal to not be too needed, even by my aging mother and father. But last winter was a tough one. After my parents’ deaths, I’d been in conflict with my brother, and I was facing daunting tax and career troubles. Ira was troubled, too.
Maybe a dog would change things, or at least cheer us up. But the question did come into my head: Was there something lacking in our lives as a couple that I wanted a dog to fulfill? It’s common enough for the presence of a baby to change the dynamic of a marriage. Could a dog do the same thing? And then there was Ira’s issue, which I couldn’t shake: Did I have enough affection for both him and a dog?
In the spring we started visiting animal shelters. But there was only one breed I imagined owning, a beagle, and there weren’t any available. So I started looking online, also in vain. The day in May after I reluctantly put down the deposit for the mini-dachshund, I was tortured with recrimination. Why couldn’t I make myself want her?
“Is the problem,” Ira asked, “that you don’t think you can care for a dog?”
“She’s just not the dog I imagined losing my freedom for,” I wailed like a freaked-out groom before his wedding night. “She’s too small. She’s just too gay!” I was sitting at my computer in a cold sweat, searching for beagles with the guilt of a porn addict.
Ira was disgusted. “You just want something you think is cute,” he said. “But that dachshund needs a home, and if you think a dog is just an accessory then maybe you don’t deserve to have one.”
I wanted to bark at him and bite his head off. Instead I got into the car and seethed as I stepped on the gas and drove us back to the animal shelter.
The administrator looked at me suspiciously. Did I want this little dog or not?
“Can we take her for another walk before I decide?” I asked.
A no-nonsense attendant in rainboots took us past rows of barking dogs, many big and scary, at least to me. The smell of the kennel was rank, the atmosphere fraught with desperation. When we reached the little dachshund’s pen, she was on her hind legs against a cyclone fence, barking in an unbearably shrill tone, though she was wagging her tail.
The attendant handed me her leash. Black and brown, and not much bigger than a ferret, she strained at it outside, paying us no heed as she yanked with surprising force and barked at each dog we passed in a way that put me on edge.
“How can you stand that shrill barking?” one woman asked.
I didn’t know, but the dog must have sensed my equivocation because suddenly, at a moment when I wasn’t holding her leash properly (what did I know about holding a leash?) she ran from us down a winding road that led to the Long Island Expressway. It was horrifying. How did those stubby little legs carry her so fast? Ira chased her, running in the middle of the road faster than I’d ever seen him run.
“Help!” he yelled. “I need help! Get the car!”
I feared they’d both be hit by oncoming traffic, and imagined my happily married life about to end, all because of a little dog. Between the time I got into my car to chase her and the moment we caught her, I had a painful stab of the most profound sorrow — imagining a return to the hermetic life without Ira that I had led for most of my adult years.
With the help of a passing driver, we caught the dog, put her in my car and drove her back to the parking lot of the shelter, where we all sat in the front seat, catching our collective breath and getting over our shock.
Ira was panting, as was the little dog in my lap, her heart pounding against my thigh. Soon enough she calmed down and rested her long snout against my forearm.
After such a dreadful experience, you’d think I’d be ready to give her back. Instead, I felt something in me shifting as she curled up and snuggled deeper into my arm. “All she wants is to be held,” I said in a tone I’d have mocked an hour before.
And that was that. A dog I originally disliked for cosmetic reasons instantly transformed me into the kind of myopic, cooing dog owner I had previously scorned. And without missing a beat, Ira found himself devoted and in love with her, too.
With us for four months now, she has been following me around the house with needy eyes that I never would have expected to find so engaging. And if, as I’ve heard before, the work of dogs is to love and be loved, then she is doing her job, maybe a little too well. Twice over the summer when returning from out of town, I caught myself looking forward to her greeting more than Ira’s, and then feeling conflicted about it. And often when Ira and I hug or tussle, I find myself waiting for her to jump in to join us.
Then there is the issue of bedtime. With the sober concern of parents dealing with the sleep issues of children, we debate whether to allow her in our bed. She doesn’t take up much room, but she does manage to get between us, making it difficult for us to fall into our typical embrace before sleep.
For now, I keep her off until dawn, when I let her out of her crate. She leaps onto the blankets, long black ears with fringed bottoms flapping behind her, right into Ira’s arms to plant kisses on his face. As he cuddles with her, it feels like he’s doing the same with me — that’s how profoundly I feel we are all intertwined. It’s ridiculous, I know. But then, I sometimes think that dogs are around to make us sillier than we are.
Well, they don’t judge. George Eliot must have known that when she wrote that we love dogs because “we long for an affection altogether ignorant of our faults.” Certainly they don’t challenge you in the ways a spouse, parent or child can. But in their own way, they do get you to think beyond your own needs a little. If you don’t believe that, try walking an unhappy dog at midnight in the pouring rain.
PERHAPS if I’d had one while I was single, it would have helped prepare me for the demands of a relationship. One thing I know for certain: Ira had it wrong. Affection, I can now see, is not something one has in limited supply like money or drinking water. It’s more like a muscle that grows the more you use it. Or maybe it’s an explosion like nuclear fission.
The other night we were on the couch with our wiggling dog in something between a tangle of caresses and a group hug. Ira couldn’t have looked happier.
“She’s actually made you more affectionate towards me, not less,” he said.
A little dog I didn’t think I wanted has turned out to be exactly what we needed. We only had to tweak her name a tiny bit to make it work for our own self-consciously ironic purposes. Instead of Zoe, she is now Zoloft. And she is as good as her name.

나는 언제나 강아지는 절대 갖지 않으리라 다짐했다. 사실 나는 일생의 절반을 강아지 혐오자로 허비했다. 세상에는 궁핍한 강아지를 데리고 사는 궁핍한 사람들이 왜 이리 많은 것일까? 한 이혼한 친구는 6년 동안을 게으르게 침을 질질 흘리는 골든 리트리버와 아주 친밀하게 보냈다. 그 개는 그녀의 전남편이 주지 못한 사랑을 그녀에게 베풀었다. 내가 아는 다른 독신 여자는 만약 그녀의 말티즈가 그녀가 만나는 남자를 물려고 하면 그 남자는 그녀와는 맞지 않는 것이라고 생각한다. 말하자면 아주 성급한 판단인 것이다. 한번은 잘생긴 남자와 그의 잘생긴 포르투갈 워터도그와 같이 데이트를 한적이 있는데 그 둘은 서로에게만 관심을 가져서 나에게는 관심도 주지 않았다.
“너는 이해못해.” 친구가 잘했다. “강아지는 무조건적인 사랑을 주는 존재야.”
알겠어. 하지만 얻어지는 사랑은? 그리고 상식은?

Source text - English FOR the first time in 13 years, I was sitting in a barber’s chair. The barber, Mike — mid-50s, short, with a head of thinning, perfectly groomed hair — turned me to face the mirror and asked, “So, what are we going to do today?”
I was so out of practice that I hadn’t even anticipated this question. I hemmed and hawed.
Finally he said, “Just clean it up a bit?”
“Yeah, that sounds good.”
He picked up a comb and started in.
“I haven’t been to a barber in a long time,” I said. “My wife always cuts my hair. But after 13 years, she’s left me. So I figure I need to find a different haircutter.”
This, I know, was quite a bombshell to drop on Mike the barber after 10 seconds in his chair. But he just nodded. A minute later, he asked, “So does your wife cut hair for a living?”
“Oh, no,” I said. “Just mine.”
I considered telling him everything, unburdening myself to the barber as though he were a priest and the chair a confessional. I thought I could give him the CliffsNotes version of our relationship: how we met in high school biology, went off to separate colleges, married at 20, had our first daughter by 21 and two more by 27. How, before marrying, I converted to her conservative religion. And how, unable to quell my longstanding misgivings, I made the wrenching decision a decade later to leave the church.
I knew my move might threaten our marriage, and ultimately I was right — it did, but not the way I had expected. Instead of dividing us, it briefly sent us down the same path, as my wife soon walked away from the church, too. But in her case it was a faith that had defined her for 30 years.
At first, our church-free life seemed full of possibility. Things got tougher, though, as we tried to find our way without the religious dictates that had guided us for so long: the importance of marriage to family, its sacrifices and requirements, the role of children, the idea that God wants you to be married.
I don’t think we understood how pervasive those assumptions were in how we thought about our marriage. And they didn’t crumble the next day or week but drifted away over a period of months. By the time my wife started law school, our marriage — the thing I always had taken for granted — was already fraying. I was too busy to notice: hiding behind work, behind “supporting her” as she returned to school, behind caring for our three young girls.
But it was more complicated than that, of course. It always is. I could have spun a dozen different narratives for Mike. There was the one about how our too-young marriage never matured and another where she was struggling through a midlife crisis and I was collateral damage. I could tell him about the stay-at-home mom finding her career and losing her husband, the one where she felt like a newly hatched butterfly, spreading her still-wet wings in the sunlight. (“Somehow,” she once said to me, “you got cast in the role of the cocoon.”)
But if I had told Mike all of that, the place would have started feeling less like a barbershop and more like a beauty parlor. So I said nothing. And he said nothing. Snip, snip, snip.
My old haircuts were quick, dirty and simple. “Hey, could I get a haircut?” I’d ask her after the kids were in bed.
“Sure,” she’d say. “Go get the clippers.”
I’d put a chair in the middle of the kitchen, take my shirt off to avoid getting hair all over it, and sit down. The cold metal folding chair shocked my bare back. We never used a sheet to catch the hair. It seemed simpler to sweep it up afterward.
She’d buzz the back and sides of my head with the clippers. I would try not to flinch when the busted blade pinched me. Then she’d quickly clip the top with scissors. Ten years old and never sharpened, they’d catch and pull.
She would straddle my legs, which felt like foreplay those times when I knew that afterward I would shower and then we would sleep together.
Those haircuts — seven minutes start to finish — fed my lack of vanity. I could go for hours without looking in a mirror to see how it turned out. To me a good haircut simply meant I wouldn’t need another haircut for months.
Now a good haircut meant hot lather, a straight blade and an old guy pampering me. Mike’s scissors were noticeably sharp. They didn’t tug at my hair. And his electric clippers didn’t have a broken blade that nicked the back of my neck.
In a way, Mike’s chair was a homecoming. Back in college, my last barber, Antonio, was similarly old school. Stooped by age, he talked little and managed to have just enough control of his shaky hands. Having my new bride take over the job seemed like a way for us, as poor students, to save a few bucks. And I didn’t have to worry that Antonio’s palsy might get worse at the exact moment he was holding a blade near my neck.
Was I simply coming full circle? I felt as if I was hitting the reset button on my life. Once a relationship disintegrates, does that mean it was a mistake to begin with? We all hear about breakups: the screaming, the changing of locks, the sabotaging of e-mail accounts. That’s not us. We still get along well, rarely fighting, never screaming. She moved just four blocks away to a one-bedroom rental apartment close enough that she walks back each morning as I head to work. I see her almost every day.
“Amazing,” she told me recently, “how two people can have such wildly different understandings of the same relationship.” Which is true. I saw our struggles as momentary dips on a long-term trend line that was climbing steadily upward toward an easy, comfortable, lifelong partnership. She saw those same good times as aberrations, brief rises on an otherwise falling line.
Back in Mike’s chair, I looked into the mirror and saw the end of an era. I saw my face, my slightly crooked nose. I saw independence and solitude. Would I keep coming back to Mike? Maybe this was exactly what I needed — a regular barber. Or maybe what I needed was to try other barbers, to play the field. Then I noticed how goofy my ears looked, and I wanted to close my eyes and make all of this disappear. So I closed my eyes.
In relationships, at least in mine, there’s a constant tension between relying on others and being self-sufficient. How do we balance doing things for this other person because we care about her with maintaining our own space, with letting her maintain her own world? There were all sorts of things that she once did for me. It wasn’t that I couldn’t take care of them, but at some point she took over those responsibilities and that became the pattern.
I cooked the fish. She paid the bills. I packed the luggage into the car. She made the pancakes. She called the other day, proud of herself for replacing an electrical outlet in her new place. In our previous life, I always handled the wiring.
As I wrapped my mind around these patterns, our at-home barbershop no longer struck me as endearing. In fact, it suddenly seemed like the whole reason we were getting divorced — a static role we had fallen into and then felt bound by. If only I had never asked her to cut my hair.
Just as Mike was finishing up with the baby powder and the final combing, the phone rang. The old Greek owner of the shop picked it up.
“We take the first appointment at 7:30 and the last at 4:30,” he told the caller. He gave directions to the shop, offered a few appointments on upcoming days. Then he started sounding exasperated, ending the call with: “It may be easier if he just calls himself.”
After he hung up, he faced the rest of us with a rueful shake of his head. “When a woman is that involved in a man’s haircut,” he said, “it’s trouble.”
In the mirror, I saw Mike smile at me.
He showed me the back of my neck in a hand mirror. “Hope it’s as good as you’re used to,” he says. “I was just following in her footsteps.”
As I left the shop, I rubbed my hand over my head, touching the bristly ends and my smooth neck. Is this what divorce feels like? I wondered.
ON my way home, I played out the coming encounter in my mind. My wife and I would exchange the child-care baton, after which she would head off to class and from there to her apartment. Meanwhile, I’d make dinner for the girls and put them to bed.
I tried to imagine my wife’s reaction to my haircut. She would probably take it as a sign that I was moving on. She might even cry. She’s like that.
If she did, I’d try to act nonchalant. If she were to ask where I went to get it cut, I’d respond vaguely, drawing out the conversation as long as I could, wanting to hold onto it, wanting to hold onto everything. I’d ask about the law school paper she was working on. We’d go over the girls’ schedule for the next day. Maybe we’d talk about the coming weekend.
But when I arrived home and found her in the living room getting ready to leave for the night, none of those things happened. She didn’t ask about the barber. She didn’t cry. She didn’t notice at all.

처음에는 교회를 다니지 않는 삶이 가능성으로 가득 찬 삶인 것 같았다. 우리를 지금까지 오랫동안 인도해준 가족에 이르는 결혼의 중요성, 희생과 자격들, 자식의 역할, 신은 당신이 결혼하기를 원한다는 생각과 같은 종교적 규칙 없이 살아보려 노력했음에도 불구하고 상황은 더욱 어려워져 갔다.
그러한 규칙들이 내가 생각했던 것만큼 우리의 결혼생활에 얼마나 깊이 스며들어있는지 인지했다고 생각하지 않는다. 그리고 그것들은 하루나 일주일 새에 허물어지지 않았고 한달 이나 지나서야 떠내려 갔다. 내 아내가 법 학교를 다니기 시작했을 무렵, 내가 언제나 당연하게 생각했던 우리의 결혼 생활이 이미 닳아가고 있었다. 일에 숨어서 그녀가 학교에서 돌아올 때 “그녀를 내조하는 것”에 숨어서, 세 딸들을 돌보는 것에 숨어서, 너무 바쁘다는 핑계로 그것을 알아차리지 못했다.
물론 이것은 이것보다는 더욱 복잡하다. 그건 언제나 그러하다. 나는 십여 개가 되는 다른 이야기를 마이크에게 그럴 듯 하게 제시할 수 있었다. 그 중 하나는 우리가 너무 어렸을 때 결혼해서 우리의 결혼이 성숙하지 못했다는 것이고 다른 하나는 그녀가 중년의 위기를 겪고 있었고 나는 부수적인 피해라는 것이다. 전업 주부가 직업을 갖고 남편은 잃었다는 이야기라던가 그녀가 이제 막 고치에서 나온 나비라고 느껴서 그녀의 아직 젖어있는 날개를 태양을 향해 펼쳐 올랐다는 이야기 같은 것도 해줄 수 있었다. (“그럴지도.” 언젠가 그녀가 나에게 말했다. “그럼 당신은 고치의 역할이겠네.”)
하지만 만약 내가 마이크에게 이런 모든 이야기를 한다면 여기가 이발소라기 보다는 미용실처럼 느껴지기 시작할 것이었다. 그래서 나는 아무 말도 안 했다. 그리고 그도 아무 말도 안 했다. 싹둑 싹둑 싹둑.
내 머리는 빨리 자랐고 지저분했으며 평범했다. “여보, 머리 좀 잘라줄래?” 나는 애들이 자러 간 후 그녀에게 물었었다.
“물론,” 그녀는 말했었다. “이발기 가져와.”
나는 부엌 가운데에 의자를 놓고 머리카락이 내려앉는 것을 피하기 위해 셔츠를 벗고 앉았었다. 철로 된 차가운 의자가 헐벗은 내 등에 소름을 끼치게 만들었다. 우리는 절대 의자 밑에 아무런 시트도 깔지 않았다. 이발 후에 쓸어버리는 게 더 간단해 보였다.
그녀는 이발기로 내 머리의 뒤쪽과 옆쪽에서 윙윙거리는 소리를 냈다. 나는 고장 난 날이 나를 꼬집을까 봐 움찔거리지 않으려 노력했다. 그러고 그녀는 머리 위쪽을 가위로 빠르게 잘랐었다. 10년이나 되고 한번도 날카롭게 갈지 않았지만 가위는 아주 잘 들었었다.
그녀는 내 다리를 벌리고 올라 서기도 했고 그것은 마치 이발 후에 샤워를 하거나 같이 잠잘 때 으레 하는 것의 전희 같은 느낌을 받았다.
시작한 후 7분이면 끝나는 이러한 이발은 나의 부족한 허영심을 채워주었다. 내가 어떻게 변했나 거울로 확인해보지 않고 몇 시간을 나갈 수 있었다. 나에게 좋은 이발이란 몇 달 동안 이발을 할 필요가 없다는 것을 의미하기 때문이다.
지금은 좋은 이발이 뜨거운 비누거품, 날카로운 면도기와 나를 애지중지해주는 늙은이를 의미했다. 마이크의 가위는 아주 날카로웠다. 그 가위는 내 머리를 세게 잡아당기지 않았다. 그리고 그의 전자동 이발기는 고장 난 날도 없었고 내 목 뒤쪽에 칼자국을 내지도 않았다.
어떤 면에서는 마이크의 의자는 동창회 같기도 했다. 대학교 때 내 마지막 이발사였던 안토니오도 비슷하게 구식이었다. 나이 때문에 구부정해져서 그는 거의 말이 없었으며 그의 떨리는 손을 가까스로 제어하고 있었다. 몇 푼이라도 아끼려는 가난한 학생마냥 나의 새 신부가 내 머리를 자르는 작업을 인계 받았다. 그리고 나는 안토니오가 내 목 근처에서 면도날을 들고 있는 그 순간에 갑자기 중풍이 심해지지는 않을까 하는 걱정을 할 필요가 없어졌다.
나는 그저 원점으로 돌아온 것일까? 나는 내 인생의 리셋 버튼을 누른 것 같은 느낌이었다. 관계가 산산조각 날 때 그것은 처음에는 실수를 의미하는 것일까? 우리는 이별에 대해서 모두 들어왔다. 고함이 오가고 자물쇠를 바꾸고 이 메일을 해킹하는 것들을. 우리는 그렇지 않았다. 우리는 아직도 잘 지내며 거의 싸우지 않았고 절대 고함이 오가지도 않았다. 그녀는 그저 네 블록 떨어진 곳에 원룸 아파트로 옮겨갔으며 내가 일을 나가는 매일 아침에 그녀가 걸어서 돌아오기에 충분히 가까운 거리였다. 나는 그녀를 거의 매일 본다.
“놀라워,” 그녀가 최근에 말했다, “같은 관계에 있는 두 사람이 얼마나 다른 이해관계를 가지고 있을 수 있는지 말이야.” 맞는 말이다. 나는 우리의 다툼이 안락하고 편안한 평생의 동반관계로 꾸준히 올라가는 긴 추세 선에서 일시적으로 삐끗하는 것으로만 보았다. 그녀는 그러한 같은 좋은 시간들을 일탈로 봤으며 선에서 떨어지는 대신에 일시적으로 올라가는 것으로 보았다.
마이크의 의자로 돌아와서 나는 거울을 들여다봤으며 시대의 끝을 보았다. 나는 내 얼굴을, 나의 살짝 굽은 코를 보았다. 나는 자립과 고독을 보았다. 내가 마이크에게 다시 머리를 자르러 올 수 있을까? 아마 정기적인 이발사가 내가 가장 원하는 것일지도 모른다. 아니면 나에게 필요한 건 다른 이발사한테 가서 양다리를 걸치는 것일지도 모른다. 그때 나는 내 귀가 얼마나 얼빠지게 생겼는지 알았고 그저 눈을 감아서 모든 것을 사라지게 하고 싶었다. 그래서 나는 눈을 감았다.
적어도 나에게 있어서 관계란 다른 사람에게 의지하는 것과 자급자족 하며 지내는 것 사이에서 끊임없는 긴장 상태에 있는 것이라고 본다. 다른 사람에게 이러한 어떻게 균형을 유지할 수 있을까? 그녀만의 세계를 유지한 상태로 우리만의 우주를 유지하며 그녀를 아끼면서 말이다. 이러한 모든 것들은 그녀가 나에게 한때 해줬던 것들이다. 그것을 아낄 수 없었다는 것은 아니지만 어떤 때는 그녀는 그러한 책임들을 떠안았고 그것이 일상이 되었다.
나는 생선을 굽고 그녀는 청구서를 지불했다. 나는 차에 짐을 실었고 그녀는 팬케이크를 만들었다. 그녀는 그녀의 새로운 공간에 전자기기들을 대체하는 것에 그녀 스스로 자랑스러워 하며 또 다른 나날이라 불렀다. 우리의 예전 삶에서는 내가 언제나 배선을 다뤘었다.
이러한 패턴들로 내 마음을 굳혔을 때 집에서 하는 이발은 더 이상 나에게 사랑스러운 것이 아니었다. 사실은 그것이 갑자기 우리가 이혼해야 할 모든 이유로 보였다. 우리에게 닥친 그리고 묶여버린 정해진 역할 같은 것 말이다. 내가 그녀에게 머리 좀 잘라달라고 물어볼 수만 있다면 좋을 텐데.
마이크가 막 이발을 끝내고 베이비 파우더를 발라주고 마지막 빗질을 할 때 전화 벨이 울렸다. 늙은 그리스인 주인은 전화를 받았다.
“7시30 분에서 4시 30분까지만 예약을 받습니다.” 그가 전화에 대고 말했다. 그가 가게의 위치를 말해주고 며칠간의 예약 몇 개를 제안했다. 그 후 그는 몹시 짜증을 내며 말하기 시작했고 통화가 끝날 때 이렇게 말했다. “그냥 그가 직접 전화하는 게 쉽겠네요.”
그는 전화를 끊고 우리에게 암담하게 고개를 저으며 말했다. “여자가 남자의 이발에 간섭하는 것은,” 그가 말했다. “문제야 문제.”
거울을 통해서 마이크가 나에게 미소를 짓는 것을 보았다.
그가 손거울로 내 목 뒤쪽을 보여줬다. “당신이 하던 이발만큼 좋았기를 바랄게요,” 그가 말했다. “나는 그저 그녀의 발자취를 따라가는 것뿐이죠.”
가게를 나설 때 나는 손을 머리위로 문질렀고 까칠까칠한 끝과 부드러운 목을 만졌다. 이게 이혼하는 느낌일까? 나는 궁금하다.
집에 가는 길에 나의 머릿속에서 다른 생각을 떠올리게 했다. 내 아내와 내가 아이를 기르는 바통을 교환하고 그 후에 그녀는 그녀의 아파트에서 학교를 가고 오는 것을 막을 수 있을 것이다. 그 동안에 나는 아이들을 위한 저녁을 만들고 아이들을 잠자리에 들게 할 수 있을 것이다.
나는 내 머리를 보고 아내가 어떤 반응을 보일지 상상해보려 노력했다. 그녀는 아마도 내가 이제 떠나갔다는 신호로 받아들일 것이다. 아마 울지도 모른다. 그녀는 그런 사람이다.
만약 그녀가 운다면 나는 태연한 척하려 노력할 것이다. 만약 그녀가 내가 어디서 머리를 잘랐는지 묻는다면 나는 모호하게 대답하면서 내가 할 수 있는 최대한 대화를 질질 끌 것이다. 그 대화를 붙잡고 싶은 마음에서, 모든 것을 다시 붙잡고 싶은 마음에서. 나는 그녀가 쓰고 있는 법대 논문에 대해서 물어볼 것이다. 우리는 다음 날의 아이들의 스케줄 이야기로 넘어갈 것이다. 아마 우리는 다음 주의 이야기도 할지 모른다.
하지만 내가 집에 도착해서 그 날밤 떠나려고 준비하는 그녀를 거실에서 봤을 때 어떤 일도 일어나지 않았다. 그녀는 이발사에 대해 묻지도 않았다. 울지도 않았다. 그녀는 아무것도 눈치채지 못했다.

Source text - Korean 소년은 개울가에서 소녀를 보자 곧 윤 초시네 증손녀(曾孫女)딸이라는 걸 알 수 있었다. 소녀는 개울에다 손을 잠그고 물장난을 하고 있는 것이다. 서울서는 이런 개울물을 보지 못하기나 한 듯이.
벌써 며칠째 소녀는, 학교에서 돌아오는 길에 물장난이었다. 그런데, 어제까지 개울 기슭에서 하더니, 오늘은 징검다리 한가운데 앉아서 하고 있다.
소년은 개울둑에 앉아 버렸다. 소녀가 비키기를 기다리자는 것이다.
요행 지나가는 사람이 있어, 소녀가 길을 비켜 주었다.
다음 날은 좀 늦게 개울가로 나왔다.
이 날은 소녀가 징검다리 한가운데 앉아 세수를 하고 있었다. 분홍 스웨터 소매를 걷어올린 목덜미가 마냥 희었다.
한참 세수를 하고 나더니, 이번에는 물 속을 빤히 들여다 본다. 얼굴이라도 비추어 보는 것이리라. 갑자기 물을 움켜 낸다. 고기 새끼라도 지나가는 듯.
소녀는 소년이 개울둑에 앉아 있는 걸 아는지 모르는지 그냥 날쌔게 물만 움켜 낸다. 그러나, 번번이 허탕이다. 그대로 재미있는 양, 자꾸 물만 움킨다. 어제처럼 개울을 건너는 사람이 있어야 길을 비킬 모양이다.
그러다가 소녀가 물 속에서 무엇을 하나 집어 낸다. 하얀 조약돌이었다. 그리고는 벌떡 일어나 팔짝팔짝 징검다리를 뛰어 건너간다.
다 건너가더니만 홱 이리로 돌아서며,
“이 바보.”
조약돌이 날아왔다.
소년은 저도 모르게 벌떡 일어섰다.
단발 머리를 나풀거리며 소녀가 막 달린다. 갈밭 사잇길로 들어섰다. 뒤에는 청량한 가을 햇살 아래 빛나는 갈꽃뿐.
이제 저쯤 갈밭머리로 소녀가 나타나리라. 꽤 오랜 시간이 지났다고 생각됐다. 그런데도 소녀는 나타나지 않는다. 발돋움을 했다. 그러고도 상당한 시간이 지났다고 생각됐다.
저 쪽 갈밭머리에 갈꽃이 한 옴큼 움직였다. 소녀가 갈꽃을 안고 있었다. 그리고, 이제는 천천한 걸음이었다. 유난히 맑은 가을 햇살이 소녀의 갈꽃머리에서 반짝거렸다. 소녀 아닌 갈꽃이 들길을 걸어가는 것만 같았다.
소년은 이 갈꽃이 아주 뵈지 않게 되기까지 그대로 서 있었다. 문득, 소녀가 던지 조약돌을 내려다보았다. 물기가 걷혀 있었다. 소년은 조약돌을 집어 주머니에 넣었다.
다음 날부터 좀더 늦게 개울가로 나왔다. 소녀의 그림자가 뵈지 않았다. 다행이었다.
그러나, 이상한 일이었다. 소녀의 그림자가 뵈지 않는 날이 계속될수록 소년의 가슴 한 구석에는 어딘가 허전함이 자리 잡는 것이었다. 주머니 속 조약돌을 주무르는 버릇이 생겼다.
그러한 어떤 날, 소년은 전에 소녀가 앉아 물장난을 하던 징검다리 한가운데에 앉아 보았다. 물 속에 손을 잠갔다. 세수를 하였다. 물 속을 들여다보았다. 검게 탄 얼굴이 그대로 비치었다. 싫었다.
소년은 두 손으로 물 속의 얼굴을 움키었다. 몇 번이고 움키었다. 그러다가 깜짝 놀라 일어나고 말았다. 소녀가 이리로 건너오고 있지 않느냐.
‘숨어서 내가 하는 일을 엿보고 있었구나.’ 소년은 달리기를 시작했다. 디딤돌을 헛디뎠다. 한 발이 물 속에 빠졌다. 더 달렸다.
몸을 가릴 데가 있어 줬으면 좋겠다. 이 쪽 길에는 갈밭도 없다. 메밀밭이다. 전에 없이 메밀꽃 냄새가 짜릿하게 코를 찌른다고 생각됐다. 미간이 아찔했다. 찝찔한 액체가 입술에 흘러들었다. 코피였다.
소년은 한 손으로 코피를 훔쳐내면서 그냥 달렸다. 어디선가 ‘바보, 바보’ 하는 소리가 자꾸만 뒤따라오는 것 같았다.
토요일이었다.
개울가에 이르니, 며칠째 보이지 않던 소녀가 건너편 가에 앉아 물장난을 하고 있었다. 모르는 체 징검다리를 건너기 시작했다. 얼마 전에 소녀 앞에서 한 번 실수를 했을 뿐, 여태 큰길 가듯이 건너던 징검다리를 오늘은 조심스럽게 건넌다.
“얘.”
못 들은 체했다. 둑 위로 올라섰다.
“얘, 이게 무슨 조개지?”
자기도 모르게 돌아섰다. 소녀의 맑고 검은 눈과 마주쳤다. 얼른 소녀의 손바닥으로 눈을 떨구었다.
“비단조개.”
“이름도 참 곱다.”
갈림길에 왔다. 여기서 소녀는 아래편으로 한 삼 마장쯤, 소년은 우대로 한 십 리 가까운 길을 가야 한다.
소녀가 걸음을 멈추며,
“너, 저 산 너머에 가 본 일 있니?”
벌 끝을 가리켰다.
“없다.”
“우리, 가 보지 않으련? 시골 오니까 혼자서 심심해 못 견디겠다.”
“저래 봬도 멀다.”
“멀면 얼마나 멀기에? 서울 있을 땐 사뭇 먼 데까지 소풍 갔었다.”
소녀의 눈이 금새 ‘바보,바보,’할 것만 같았다.
논 사잇길로 들어섰다. 벼 가을걷이하는 곁을 지났다.
허수아비가 서 있었다. 소년이 새끼줄을 흔들었다. 참새가 몇 마리 날아간다. ‘참, 오늘은 일찍 집으로 돌아가 텃논의 참새를 봐야 할걸.’ 하는 생각이 든다.
“야, 재밌다!”
소녀가 허수아비 줄을 잡더니 흔들어 댄다. 허수아비가 자꾸 우쭐거리며 춤을 춘다. 소녀의 왼쪽 볼에 살포시 보조개가 패었다.
저만큼 허수아비가 또 서 있다. 소녀가 그리로 달려간다. 그 뒤를 소년도 달렸다. 오늘 같은 날은 일찍 집으로 돌아가 집안일을 도와야 한다는 생각을 잊어버리기라도 하려는 듯이.
소녀의 곁을 스쳐 그냥 달린다. 메뚜기가 따끔따끔 얼굴에 와 부딪친다. 쪽빛으로 한껏 갠 가을 하늘이 소년의 눈앞에서 맴을 돈다. 어지럽다. 저놈의 독수리, 저놈의 독수리, 저놈의 독수리가 맴을 돌고 있기 때문이다.
돌아다보니, 소녀는 지금 자기가 지나쳐 온 허수아비를 흔들고 있다. 좀 전 허수아비보다 더 우쭐거린다.
논이 끝난 곳에 도랑이 하나 있었다. 소녀가 먼저 뛰어 건넜다.
거기서부터 산 밑까지는 밭이었다.
수숫단을 세워 놓은 밭머리를 지났다.
“저게 뭐니?”
“원두막.”
“여기 참외, 맛있니?”
“그럼, 참외 맛도 좋지만 수박 맛은 더 좋다.”
“하나 먹어 봤으면.”
소년이 참외 그루에 심은 무우밭으로 들어가, 무우 두 밑을 뽑아 왔다. 아직 밑이 덜 들어 있었다. 잎을 비틀어 팽개친 후, 소녀에게 한개 건넨다. 그리고는 이렇게 먹어야 한다는 듯이, 먼저 대강이를 한 입 베물어 낸 다음, 손톱으로 한 돌이 껍질을 벗겨 우쩍 깨문다.
소녀도 따라 했다. 그러나, 세 입도 못 먹고,
“아, 맵고 지려.”
하며 집어던지고 만다.
“참, 맛 없어 못 먹겠다.”
소년이 더 멀리 팽개쳐 버렸다.
산이 가까워졌다.
단풍이 눈에 따가웠다.
“야아!”
소녀가 산을 향해 달려갔다. 이번은 소년이 뒤따라 달리지 않았다. 그러고도 곧 소녀보다 더 많은 꽃을 꺾었다.
“이게 들국화, 이게 싸리꽃, 이게 도라지꽃,…….”
“도라지꽃이 이렇게 예쁜 줄은 몰랐네. 난 보랏빛이 좋아!…… 그런데, 이 양산 같이 생긴 노란 꽃이 뭐지?”
“마타리꽃.”
소녀는 마타리꽃을 양산 받듯이 해 보인다. 약간 상기된 얼굴에 살포시 보조개를 떠올리며.
다시 소년은 꽃 한 옴큼을 꺾어 왔다. 싱싱한 꽃가지만 골라 소녀에게 건넨다.
그러나 소녀는
“하나도 버리지 마라.”
산마루께로 올라갔다.
맞은편 골짜기에 오순도순 초가집이 몇 모여 있었다.
누가 말할 것도 아닌데, 바위에 나란히 걸터앉았다. 유달리 주위가 조용해진 것 같았다. 따가운 가을 햇살만이 말라가는 풀 냄새를 퍼뜨리고 있었다.
“저건 또 무슨 꽃이지?”
적잖이 비탈진 곳에 칡덩굴이 엉키어 꽃을 달고 있었다.
“꼭 등꽃 같네. 서울 우리 학교에 큰 등나무가 있었단다. 저 꽃을 보니까 등나무 밑에서 놀던 동무들 생각이 난다.”
소녀가 조용히 일어나 비탈진 곳으로 간다. 꽃송이가 많이 달린 줄기를 잡고 끊기 시작한다. 좀처럼 끊어지지 않는다. 안간힘을 쓰다가 그만 미끄러지고 만다. 칡덩굴을 그러쥐었다.
소년이 놀라 달려갔다. 소녀가 손을 내밀었다. 손을 잡아 이끌어 올리며, 소년은 제가 꺾어다 줄 것을 잘못했다고 뉘우친다. 소녀의 오른쪽 무릎에 핏방울이 내맺혔다. 소년은 저도 모르게 생채기에 입술을 가져다 대고 빨기 시작했다. 그러다가, 무슨 생각을 했는지 홱 일어나 저 쪽으로 달려간다.
좀 만에 숨이 차 돌아온 소년은
“이걸 바르면 낫는다.”
송진을 생채기에다 문질러 바르고는 그 달음으로 칡덩굴 있는 데로 내려가, 꽃 많이 달린 몇 줄기를 이빨로 끊어 가지고 올라온다. 그리고는,
“저기 송아지가 있다. 그리 가 보자.”
누렁송아지였다. 아직 코뚜레도 꿰지 않았다.
소년이 고삐를 바투 잡아 쥐고 등을 긁어 주는 체 훌쩍 올라탔다. 송아지가 껑충거리며 돌아간다.
소녀의 흰 얼굴이, 분홍 스웨터가, 남색 스커트가, 안고 있는 꽃과 함께 범벅이 된다. 모두가 하나의 큰 꽃묶음 같다. 어지럽다. 그러나, 내리지 않으리라. 자랑스러웠다. 이것만은 소녀가 흉내 내지 못할, 자기 혼자만이 할 수 있는 일인 것이다.
“너희, 예서 뭣들 하느냐?”
농부(農夫)하나가 억새풀 사이로 올라왔다.
송아지 등에서 뛰어내렸다. 어린 송아지를 타서 허리가 상하면 어쩌느냐고 꾸지람을 들을 것만 같다.
그런데, 나룻이 긴 농부는 소녀 편을 한 번 훑어보고는 그저 송아지 고삐를 풀어 내면서,
“어서들 집으로 가거라. 소나기가 올라.”
참, 먹장구름 한 장이 머리 위에 와 있다. 갑자기 사면이 소란스러워진 것 같다. 바람이 우수수 소리를 내며 지나간다. 삽시간에 주위가 보랏빛으로 변했다.
산을 내려오는데, 떡갈나무 잎에서 빗방울 듣는 소리가 난다. 굵은 빗방울이었다. 목덜미가 선뜻선뜻했다. 그러자, 대번에 눈앞을 가로막는 빗줄기.
비안개 속에 원두막이 보였다. 그리로 가 비를 그을 수밖에.
그러나, 원두막은 기둥이 기울고 지붕도 갈래갈래 찢어져 있었다. 그런 대로 비가 덜 새는 곳을 가려 소녀를 들어서게 했다.
소녀의 입술이 파아랗게 질렸다. 어깨를 자꾸 떨었다.
무명 겹저고리를 벗어 소녀의 어깨를 싸 주었다. 소녀는 비에 젖은 눈을 들어 한 번 쳐다보았을 뿐, 소년이 하는 대로 잠자코 있었다. 그리고는, 안고 온 꽃묶음 속에서 가지가 꺾이고 꽃이 일그러진 송이를 골라 발 밑에 버린다. 소녀가 들어선 곳도 비가 새기 시작했다. 더 거기서 비를 그을 수 없었다.
밖을 내다보던 소년이 무엇을 생각했는지 수수밭 쪽으로 달려간다. 세워 놓은 수숫단 속을 비집어 보더니, 옆의 수숫단을 날라다 덧세운다. 다시 속을 비집어 본다. 그리고는 이쪽을 향해 손짓을 한다.
수숫단 속은 비는 안 새었다. 그저 어둡고 좁은 게 안 됐다. 앞에 나앉은 소년은 그냥 비를 맞아야만 했다. 그런 소년의 어깨에서 김이 올랐다.
소녀가 속삭이듯이, 이리 들어와 앉으라고 했다. 괜찮다고 했다. 소녀가 다시, 들어와 앉으라고 했다. 할 수 없이 뒷걸음질을 쳤다. 그 바람에, 소녀가 안고 있는 꽃묶음이 망그러졌다. 그러나, 소녀는 상관없다고 생각했다. 비에 젖은 소년의 몸 내음새가 확 코에 끼얹혀졌다. 그러나, 고개를 돌리지 않았다. 도리어 소년의 몸기운으로 해서 떨리던 몸이 적이 누그러지는 느낌이었다.
소란하던 수숫잎 소리가 뚝 그쳤다. 밖이 멀개졌다.
수숫단 속을 벗어 나왔다. 멀지 않은 앞쪽에 햇빛이 눈부시게 내리붓고 있었다. 도랑 있는 곳까지 와 보니, 엄청나게 물이 불어 있었다. 빛마저 제법 붉은 흙탕물이었다. 뛰어 건널 수가 없었다.
소년이 등을 돌려 댔다. 소녀가 순순히 업히었다. 걷어올린 소년의 잠방이까지 물이 올라왔다. 소녀는 ‘어머나’소리를 지르며 소년의 목을 끌어안았다.
개울가에 다다르기 전에, 가을 하늘이 언제 그랬는가 싶게 구름 한 점 없이 쪽빛으로 개어 있었다.
그 뒤로 소녀의 모습은 뵈지 않았다. 매일같이 개울가로 달려와 봐도 뵈지 않았다.
학교에서 쉬는 시간에 운동장을 살피기도 했다. 남 몰래 5학년 여자 반을 엿보기도 했다. 그러나, 뵈지 않았다.
그날도 소년은 주머니 속 흰 조약돌만 만지작거리며 개울가로 나왔다. 그랬더니, 이 쪽 개울둑에 소녀가 앉아 있는 게 아닌가.
소년은 가슴부터 두근거렸다.
“그 동안 앓았다.”
어쩐지 소녀의 얼굴이 해쓱해져 있었다.
“그 날, 소나기 맞은 탓 아냐?”
소녀가 가만히 고개를 끄덕이었다.
“인제 다 났냐?”
“아직도…….”
“그럼, 누워 있어야지.”
“하도 갑갑해서 나왔다. ……참, 그 날 재밌었어……. 그런데그 날 어디서 이런 물이 들었는지 잘 지지 않는다.”
소녀가 분홍 스웨터 앞자락을 내려다본다. 거기에 검붉은 진흙물 같은 게 들어 있었다.
소녀가 가만히 보조개를 떠올리며,
“그래 이게 무슨 물 같니?”
소년은 스웨터 앞자락만 바라보고 있었다.
“내, 생각해 냈다. 그 날, 도랑을 건너면서 내가 업힌 일이 있지? 그 때, 네 등에서 옮은 물이다.”
소년은 얼굴이 확 달아오름을 느꼈다.
갈림길에서 소녀는
“저, 오늘 아침에 우리 집에서 대추를 땄다. 낼 제사 지내려고…….”
대추 한 줌을 내준다. 소년은 주춤한다.
“맛봐라. 우리 증조(曾祖)할아버지가 심었다는데, 아주 달다.”
소년은 두 손을 오그려 내밀며,
“참, 알도 굵다!”
“그리고 저, 우리 이번에 제사 지내고 나서 좀 있다. 집을 내주게 됐다.”
소년은 소녀네가 이사해 오기 전에 벌써 어른들의 이야기를 들어서, 윤 초시 손자(孫子)가 서울서 사업에 실패해 가지고 고향에 돌아오지 않을 수 없게 되었다는 걸 알고 있었다. 그것이 이번에는 고향 집마저 남의 손에 넘기게 된 모양이었다.
“왜 그런지 난 이사 가는 게 싫어졌다. 어른들이 하는 일이니 어쩔 수 없지만…….”
전에 없이, 소녀의 까만 눈에 쓸쓸한 빛이 떠돌았다.
소녀와 헤어져 돌아오는 길에, 소년은 혼잣속으로, 소녀가 이사를 간다는 말을 수없이 되뇌어 보았다. 무어 그리 안타까울 것도 서러울 것도 없었다. 그렇건만, 소년은 지금 자기가 씹고 있는 대추알의 단맛을 모르고 있었다.
이 날 밤, 소년은 몰래 덕쇠 할아버지네 호두밭으로 갔다.
낯에 봐 두었던 나무로 올라갔다. 그리고, 봐 두었던 가지를 향해 작대기를 내리쳤다. 호두송이 떨어지는 소리가 별나게 크게 들렸다. 가슴이 선뜩했다. 그러나 다음 순간, 굵은 호두야 많이 떨어져라, 많이 떨어져라, 저도 모를 힘에 이끌려 마구 작대기를 내리 치는 것이었다.
돌아오는 길에는 열 이틀 달이 지우는 그늘만 골라 디뎠다. 그늘의 고마움을 처음 느꼈다.
불룩한 주머니를 어루만졌다. 호두송이를 맨손으로 깠다가는 옴이 오르기 쉽다는 말 같은 건 아무렇지도 않았다. 그저 근동에서 제일 가는 이 덕쇠 할아버지네 호두를 어서 소녀에게 맛보여야 한다는 생각만이 앞섰다.
그러다, 아차 하는 생각이 들었다. 소녀더러 병이 좀 낫거들랑 이사 가기 전에 한 번 개울가로 나와 달라는 말을 못해 둔 것이었다. 바보 같은것, 바보 같은것.
이튿날, 소년이 학교에서 돌아오니, 아버지가 나들이옷으로 갈아입고 닭 한 마리를 안고 있었다.
어디 가시느냐고 물었다.
그 말에도 대꾸도 없이, 아버지는 안고 있는 닭의 무게를 겨냥해 보면서,
“이만하면 될까?”
어머니가 망태기를 내주며,
“벌써 며칠째 ‘걀걀’하고 알 날 자리를 보던데요. 크진 않아도살은 쪘을 거여요.”
소년이 이번에는 어머니한테 아버지가 어디 가시느냐고 물어 보았다.
“저, 서당골 윤 초시 댁에 가신다. 제삿상에라도 놓으시라고…….”
“그럼, 큰 놈으로 하나 가져가지. 저 얼룩수탉으로…….”
이 말에, 아버지는 허허 웃고 나서,
“임마, 그래도 이게 실속이 있다.”
소년은 공연히 열적어, 책보를 집어던지고는 외양간으로가, 쇠잔등을 한 번 철썩 갈겼다. 쇠파리라도 잡는 체.
개울물은 날로 여물어 갔다.
소년은 갈림길에서 아래쪽으로 가 보았다. 갈밭머리에서 바라보는 서당골 마을은 쪽빛 하늘 아래 한결 가까워 보였다.
어른들의 말이, 내일 소녀네가 양평읍으로 이사 간다는 것이었다. 거기 가서는 조그마한 가겟방을 보게 되리라는 것이었다.
소년은 저도 모르게 주머니 속 호두알을 만지작거리며, 한 손으로는 수없이 갈꽃을 휘어 꺾고 있었다.
그 날 밤, 소년은 자리에 누워서도 같은 생각뿐이었다. 내일 소녀네가 이사하는 걸 가 보나 어쩌나. 가면 소녀를 보게 될까 어떨까.
그러다가 까무룩 잠이 들었는가 하는데,
“허, 참 세상일도…….”
마을 갔던 아버지가 언제 돌아왔는지,
“윤 초시 댁도 말이 아니야, 그 많던 전답을 다 팔아 버리고, 대대로 살아오던 집마저 남의 손에 넘기더니, 또 악상까지 당하는걸 보면…….”
남폿불 밑에서 바느질감을 안고 있던 어머니가,
“증손(曾孫)이라곤 계집애 그 애 하나뿐이었지요?”
“그렇지, 사내 애 둘 있던 건 어려서 잃어버리고…….”
“어쩌면 그렇게 자식복이 없을까.”
“글쎄 말이지. 이번 앤 꽤 여러 날 앓는 걸 약도 변변히 못써 봤다더군. 지금 같아서 윤 초시네도 대가 끊긴 셈이지.……그런데참, 이번 계집앤 어린 것이 여간 잔망스럽지가 않아. 글쎄, 죽기전에 이런 말을 했다지 않아? 자기가 죽거든 자기 입던 옷을 꼭그대로 입혀서 묻어 달라고…….”
Translation - English When the boy saw the girl beside the stream, he immediately recognized that she must be the great-granddaughter of Choshi Yun. She dipped her hands in the water and was playing with the water. It seemed as if she had never seen this kind of stream water in Seoul.
It has been days since she played with water on her way back from school. Until yesterday she had played at the edge of the stream, but today she was played in the middle piece of the bridge of stepping-stone.
The boy sat down on the bank. He decided to wait until she got out of the way.
Luckily there was a passer-by and she made a way.
The next day, he arrived at the stream a little later. This time she was washing her face, squatting there in the middle piece of the bridge of stepping-stone. Her nape and arms under the rolled-up sleeves of her pink sweater were fairly white.
She washed her face for a while, and then she gazed into the water. She must be looking at her reflection. She made a sudden grab at the water. As if some baby fish were swimming by.
She was making nimble grabs at the water whether the girl was aware or not of the boy sitting on the bank. However, she missed every time. She simply kept grabbing at the water as if she had fun of it. Like yesterday, it looked she would only get out of the way if there was someone crossing the stream.
Then she plucked something from the water. It was a white pebble. After that, she stood up and went jumping lightly across the bridge of stepping-stones.
Once across, she turned round suddenly, "Hey, you fool."
The white pebble was flying over to him.
The boy found himself standing up.
Shaking her bobbed hair, she went running off. She took the path between the reed beds. Behind, there was nothing but reed heads shining bright in the clear autumn sunlight.
The girl would soon reappear on the far side of the reeds. Then he thought she was taking a long time. Still she did not appear. He stood on tiptoe. Still he thought she was taking an extremely long time.
Far away on the other side of the patch of reeds, a bunch of reeds was moving. The girl was hugging the reeds. Then she was walking slowly. The particularly bright sunshine shone on her reed-like hair. It was as if a reed, not the girl, was walking across the fields.
The boy remained standing there until that reed could no longer be seen. Suddenly he looked down at the pebble she had thrown at him. The moisture had dried. He picked it up and put it in his pocket.
Since the next day, he came down to the stream a later. He couldn’t see her shadow. It was a good thing.
However, it was strange. As the days without a sign of her went by, he started to feel the emptiness in his heart. He got into the habit of fingering the pebble in his pocket.
One day, the boy sat down in the middle piece of the bridge of stepping-stones, where once the girl had squatted playing with the water. He dipped his hand in the water. He washed his face. He gazed into the water. His darkly tanned face looked back at him. He hated it.
The boy grabbed at the face in the water with both hands. Several times he grabbed at it. Then he suddenly sprang up in surprise. The girl was coming in this way!
‘She was hiding, watching what I was doing.’ The boy started to run. He missed his step on a stone. One foot went into the water. He ran faster.
He wished there was somewhere he could hide. On this way, there were even no reeds. There were just buckwheat fields. He thought the smell from the buckwheat flowers was pricking his nostrils as never before. His head was spinning. A salty fluid seeped between his lips into his mouth. His nose was bleeding.
Blocking his bleeding nose with one hand, the boy went running on. He felt as if a voice repeatedly following him, ‘Silly boy. Silly boy.’
It was Saturday.
When he reached the edge of the stream, the girl, whom he had not seen for several days, was sitting beside the stream playing with the water. He started to cross the stepping stones, pretending to ignore her. A few days ago, he had made a simple mistake in front of the girl, so today he crossed the stepping stones cautiously, whereas before he had walked across them as if they were a highway.
‘Hey!’
He pretended he didn’t hear. He climbed up the bank and stopped.
'Hey, what kind of shell is this?’
Unconsciously, he turned round. He faced the girl’s bright dark eyes. He quickly turned his gaze to the girl’s palm.
‘A butterfly clam.’
‘That’s a pretty name.’
They reached the forked road. From here the girl had to go a mile or so downhill, the boy two or three miles uphill.
The girl stopped and said,
‘Have you ever been beyond that mountain?’
She pointed beyond the end of the fields.
‘Never.’
‘Why don’t we go? Down here in the country, it’s so boring I can’t stand it.’
‘It’s a long way, anyway.’
‘How far is it? Up in Seoul we used walk a long way on picnics.’
The girl’s eyes seemed to be saying, ‘Silly boy! Silly boy!’
They took a path between two paddy fields. They passed close to where the autumn harvest was under way.
A scarecrow was standing there. The boy shook its straw rope. A few sparrows went flying off. He thought ‘Oh, I supposed to go home early today to scare the sparrows from paddy field.’
‘This is fun!’
The girl was holding the scarecrow’s rope and was tugging at it. The scarecrow sways, seems to be dancing. A light dimple appeared on the girl’s left cheek.
A little further away there was another scarecrow. The girl went running toward it. The boy was running behind her. It was as if he was trying to forget that today he was supposed to go home early and help with the work.
He just ran on close beside the girl. Grasshoppers stroke their faces and left them stinging. The perfectly clear azure sky of autumn started to turn before the boy’s eyes. He was dizzy. It was because that eagle up there, that eagle up there, that eagle up there was turning.
Looking behind, the girl was shaking the scarecrow he has just run past. It swayed better than the other one. At the end of the rice fields there was a ditch. The girl jumped across it first.
From there as far as the foot of the hills was all fields.
They passed the top of a field where millet stalks were stacked together.
‘What’s that?’
‘A shelter.’
‘Look, little oriental melons. Are they delicious?’
‘Sure, they’re delicious, but water melons taste better.’
‘If only I could eat one......’
The boy went into the field where white radishes have been sown among the remains of the oriental melon plants and came back with two radishes he’d pulled up. They were still not fully grown. After he twisted off and thrown aside the leaves, he handed one to the girl. Then, as if to say ‘this is how you eat it,’ after taking a bite at the larger end he peeled away a strip of the peel with his nails and bit into the flesh beneath.
The girl followed his doing. But before even three mouthfuls, she exclaimed, ‘Oh, it’s peppery and it stinks,’ and threw away.
‘It tastes awful, I can’t eat mine either.’
The boy threw his even further.
The mountain was nearer.
Colored autumn leaves drew close to their eyes.
‘Yah!’
The girl went running toward the hills. This time, the boy was not running behind her any more. Instead, he was picking more flowers than the girl had gathered.
‘This is chrysanthemum, this is bush clover, and this is bellflower...... ‘
‘I never realized that bellflowers could be so pretty. I love purple! ... But this flower like a sunshade, what is that?’
‘A valerian.’
The girl was holding the valerian like a parasol as the delicate dimple appeared in her slightly flushed face.
Again the boy picked a handful of flower. He selected only fresh flowers to give her.
But the girl said,
‘Don’t throw anything.’
They climbed up by way of the ridge.
On the opposite of the valley, a few thatched cottages were grouped harmoniously.
Without saying anything, they sat down side by side straddling a rock. All around them seemed exceptionally quiet. Only the hot autumn sunshine was spreading the fragrance of grass drying.
‘What kind of flower is that?’
On a little steep incline, a tangled arrowroot creeper was blooming.
‘It looks just like wisteria. There was a big wisteria in our school up in Seoul. Seeing those flowers remind me of the friends I used to play with underneath it.’
The girl stood up and headed for the slope. She seized a creeper where there were many flowers blooming and started to tug at it. It did not snap easily. Making more of an effort, she ended up slipping. She grabbed hold of an arrowroot vine.
The boy, surprised, came running over. The girl held out a hand. As he was pulling her up by the hand, the boy regretted that he would have picked it for her. Drops of blood were seeping from the girl’s right knee. Automatically the boy applied his lips to the scratch and began to suck. Then, struck by some thought, he rose and went running a little way off.
Returning a moment later, out of breath, the boy said, ‘Spread this over it. It’ll get better.’
After he had spread pine resin over the scratch, he went running to the place where the arrowroot vines were and bit off with his teeth several that had a lot of flowers; these he brought back up to her. Then he said,
‘There’s a calf over there. Come on.’
It was a yellow calf. It had not yet had its nose pierced with a ring.
The boy seized the bridle tightly, pretended to scratch its back and mounted it with a bound. The calf bucked and began to turn in circles.
The girl’s pale face, pink sweater, indigo skirt, was mixed with the flowers she was hugging. It all looked like a great bunch of flowers. He felt dizzy, but he’s not going to get off. He was proud. Here was something the girl could never imitate, that only he could do.
‘What are you doing out there?’
A farmer was coming up through the high grass.
He leaped off the calf’s back. The farmer would scold him for riding the little calf and hurting the calf’s back.
But the long-bearded farmer merely glanced once toward the girl, grabbed the calf by the halter, and said, ‘You had better get home fast. There’s a shower coming up.’
Indeed, a dark cloud was rising over their heads. They suddenly found themselves surrounded on all sides by noises. The wind blew past with a rustling sound. In a flash everything around them turned deep purple. As they made their way downhill, raindrops could be heard striking the oak leaves. Thick raindrops. The napes of their necks felt cold. Then in an instant a curtain of rain bars block their sight. Through the rain mist, they could see the shelter. They had no choice but to go to shelter there. But the pillars were all aslant and the roof was in tatters. He helped the girl up, pointing out a spot where the roof was leaking less.
Her lips went blue. Her shoulders kept trembling.
He took off his cotton jacket and wrapped it round the girl’s shoulders. She raised her eyes and simply looked at him; she remained silent, letting him do as he wished. Next, he drew from the bunch of flowers she had been hugging those with broken stems and crushed flowers, which he spread under her feet. Rain soon began to drip onto the spot where she was sitting. They could not block rain there any longer.
After looking outside, the boy went running toward the millet field, as if struck by a thought. He pushed apart one of the stacks formed by leaning the millet stalks together upright, then carried over another stack and added it to the first. Then he parted the stalks again, waving her to come over.
The rain did not penetrate inside the stack of millet. It was just a dark and very narrow space. The boy sat front of the stack and let the rain soak him. Steam rose from his shoulders.
The girl whispered him that he should come and sit inside. I’m alright, he replied. Again, the girl told him to come and sit inside.
He had no choice but to enter backwards. As he did so, he crushed the flowers the girl was still holding. But the girl thought it did not matter. The stench from the boy’s wet body filled her nostrils. But she did not turn her head aside. Rather, she felt that the trembling in her body was diminishing through the warmth of the boy’s body.
The noise on the millet leaves stopped suddenly. It was clearing up outside.
They got out from among the millet stalks. Not far in front of them sunlight was shining down dazzlingly. Arriving at the ditch, they found a great flood of water filling it. It shone red, a muddy torrent. They could not jump across it.
The boy turned his back to her. The girl obediently let him carry her. The water rose as far as the boy’s rolled-up breeches.
The girl cried out, and clasped the boy’s neck.
Before they reached the stream, the autumn sky had cleared and soon it was completely blue, cloudless, as if nothing had ever happened.
After that there was no sign of the girl. Every day he ran to the stream, but she wasn’t anywhere. At break-time in school he searched the playground. He even stole a secret glance into the 5th-grade girls’ classroom. But she was not to be seen.
That day, the boy came out to the stream side, rubbing the white pebble in his pocket. And then the girl was sitting there on the bank of the stream!
The boy felt his heart began to beat.
‘I was sick for a while.’
Certainly, the girl’s face had grown paler.
‘Wasn’t it because you got wet that day, in the shower?’
The girl nodded silently.
‘Are you better now?’
‘Not yet......’
‘Then you ought to be lying down.’
‘It was too boring so I came out...... You know, it was fun, that day...... only, somewhere that day this got stained and it won’t come out.’
She looked down at the front of the pink jumper. It was stained with what looked like dark red mud.
The girl silently displayed her dimple, and she asked, ‘What kind of stain could it be?’
The boy was simply staring at the front of the jumper.
‘You know, I’ve figured it out. That day, when we crossed the ditch, I rode on your back, didn’t I? This stain came off your back then.’
The boy felt his face flush. At the forked road, the girl added, ‘Here, we picked the jujubes up at our house this morning...... For the ancestral rites tomorrow......’ She offered him a handful of jujubes. The boy hesitated.
‘Taste one. My great-grandfather planted the tree. They’re very sweet.’ The boy held out his hands cupped together, saying: ‘Wow, they’re really big!’
“Then this time, after the ancestral rites, there’s something more. We’re selling the house.’ Before the girl’s family had moved down here, the boy had already heard his parents talking. It was that Choshi Yun’s grandson’s business in Seoul had failed, so that he had to return to his home. It looked their family house was going to pass into other hands now.
‘I don’t know why but I hate to move. It’s the parents’ decision, of course, so there’s nothing I can do......’
For the first time, a sorrowful look came into the girl’s dark eyes.
On his way home after parting from the girl, the boy found himself repeating countless times to himself, ‘The girl is moving house.’ He did not feel particularly regretful or sorrowful. However, the boy was unaware of the sweetness of the jujube he was chewing.
That evening, the boy went in secret to old Deoksoi’s walnut orchard.
He climbed the tree he had seen during the day. Then he began to beat at the branch he had singled out with a pole. The sound of falling walnuts was strangely loud. His heart froze. But the next moment he was wielding the pole with unsuspected vigor: You big nuts, lots of you, come on, fall down, lots of you, fall.
On the way back, he kept to the shadows cast by the nearly full moon. It was the first time he felt grateful for shadows.
He rubbed his swollen pocket. He did not care a bit about the saying that peeling walnuts with bare hands often brings up a rash. All he could think was that he must quickly give the girl a taste of these walnuts from old Deoksoi’s trees, the finest in the whole village.
At that moment an alarming thought struck him. He had failed to tell the girl that once she was better, before they moved away, he wanted her to come out one last time to the streamside. You fool! You fool!
The next day, on returning home from school he found his father dressed in his best clothes, holding a chicken.
He asked where he was going.
Without bothering to reply, his father weighed up the chicken he was holding: ‘Will one this size do enough?’
His mother handed him a mesh bag: ‘It’s already been clucking and looking for a place to lay for several days. It may not look very big, it must be fat.’ This time the boy tried asking his mother where his father was going.
‘Well, he will go to the house of Choshi Yun over in the valley by the old school. He can use it for their offerings......’
‘Then he should take a really big one. That speckled rooster......’
At those words his father laughed out loud and said,
‘Hey, there’s flesh enough on this one.’
The boy felt abashed for no real reason, so he threw his school books down, went across to the stable and gave the cow a good slap on the back as if he were killing a blowfly.
The water in the stream matured daily.
The boy went up to the forked road and turned downhill. The village round the old school looked very near beneath the clear blue sky.
His parents had said that the girl’s family was moving to Yangpyeong the next day. There, they were going to run a tiny store.
Unthinkingly, the boy rubbed the walnuts in his pocket while with the other hand he was bending and breaking off a host of reeds.
That evening the boy kept returning to the same idea, even after he was lying down to sleep. Tomorrow, whether I go to see the girl’s family leaving or not. If I go, perhaps I might see her.
Then he must have drifted off to sleep, but then: ‘Well, really, what a world we live in......’
Father must have come back from the village. ‘Just look at the family of Choshi Yun, now. All their fields sold, the house they’ve lived in for generations handed over to other people, and then the child dying before the parents......’
His mother, sitting sewing in the lamplight, replied, ‘That great-granddaughter of his was the only child, wasn’t she?’
‘Yes. There were two boys but they lost them both when they were still young......’ ‘How can a family be so unblessed in its children?’
‘Well. The girl. She was sick for several days and they couldn’t even afford any proper medicine. Now the whole family line of Choshi Yun is cut off...... But you know, that little girl, it’s a little bit odd. Well, before she died, it seems she said that if she die, she wanted them to bury her in the clothes she’d been wearing every day......’

I have passion for video and novel translation
I like movies and dramas so I watch movies and dramas almost every day. I have seen more than 1000 movies so far and watched a lot of dramas through Netflix or other channels. While watching a lot of movies, I got to understand movies without subtitles. This seems to have been influenced by the English translation major and the steady English study. I also made translations of subtitles in movies and dramas, though it was informal. I have used the SubtitleEdit utility to translate English subtitle into Korean.
As a university student, I learned that it is a tricky task to translate English into Korean. I learned that the atmosphere of the sentence or the work changes completely depending on how the translator translates. I realize that the translation is completely different from the interpretation, and every time I translate afterwards, I do a lot of thinking and translation for each word.
