Since last year, when we were all made aware of the UK's unrecycled cup mountain, some of us have found it hard to buy a takeaway coffee without being wracked with guilt.
In the UK, we throw away an estimated 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups every year. In theory, they are "recyclable", but in practice, only a tiny percentage is dealt with sustainably. Yet so far, there's no agreed way forward.
Parliament's environmental audit committee has been hearing the latest thoughts from campaigners and industry on how we can improve on our record in this area.
A lot of the biggest names in takeaway beverages, including Caffe Nero, Costa Coffee, McDonald's, Pret A Manger and Starbucks, have signed up to a scheme to collect and recycle more of the current type of cups. Costa is also collecting cups from rival brands in its shops. But others believe a more fundamental rethink would work better.
Here are four ways the coffee cup waste problem might be tackled.
1. Frugalpac: 'Just change the cups'
Conventional cups can be recycled, but only in special facilities, thanks to the lamination that makes them waterproof.
Frugalpac, based in Ipswich in the UK, manufactures cardboard cups that can be recycled in regular recycling plants.

واستمعت لجنة التدقيق البيئي في البرلمان لأحدث الأفكار من النشطاء والمصنعين حول كيفية تحسين سجلنا في هذا المجال.
وقد وقّعت كثير من الشركات المشهورة ببيع المشروبات الجاهزة، ومن ضمنها (كافيه نيرو) و(كوستا كوفي) و(ماكدونالدز) و(بريت إيه مانجر) و(ستاربكس)، على خطة لتجميع وإعادة تدوير المزيد من النوع الحالي من الأكواب. كما تقوم شركة (كوستا) أيضاً بجمع الأكواب من الشركات ذات العلامات التجارية المنافسة لها في متاجرها.
ولكن يعتقد آخرون أن إعادة النظر بصورة جوهرية سيكون أكثر جدوى.

Your brain is to blame, a study finds.
As people age, many experience difficulties sleeping. But a new study suggests that it’s actually our sleeplessness that’s aging us.
In a study published in the journal Neuron this month, researchers found that insomnia occurs because certain brain mechanisms change as people age.
Lead study author Matthew Walker, head of the sleep and neuroimaging laboratory at University of California, Berkeley, said sleeplessness is the result of the loss of neuronal connections in the brain that pick up on the body’s cues that it’s tired. In experiments that compared the amount and type of chemical signals involved in sleep in younger mice to older ones, neuroscientists found that the chemical signature was the same regardless of age. The problem is that the receptors in the brain that receive that signal decline with age, Walker explained in a press release. That means the aging brain has the same sleep cues inside of it, but it’s unable to pick up on those cues. “It’s almost like a radio antenna that’s weak,” Walker added. “The signal is there, but the antenna just can’t pick it up.”
Walker said that while the assumption has been that insomnia was a consequence of aging, insufficient sleep may actually be a contributing factor to aging itself. Scientists have found causal links between a lack of sleep and cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity. When it comes to memory, sleep is a “Goldilocks issue”: Both too much and too little aren’t very good, according to a Harvard-based Nurses’ Health Study.

في دراسة نُشرت هذا الشهر في مجلة نيورون، وجد الباحثون أنه مع تقدم العمر يحدث الأرق نتيجة تغير في آليات معينة في الدماغ.

Everyone knows eating veggies helps enhance health. But let's face it, a plate of broccoli has nothing on a bowl of pasta. But before you brush those little tree tops aside, science has found yet another reason why consuming vegetables is good for us. The information is compelling enough that some people might want to add more green to their plates to help protect their guts.
It's no secret that cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage and brussels sprouts are good for your health. Broccoli, for instance, has been shown to have cancer-fighting powers as well as the potential to slash blood glucose levels to help diabetics. (And brussels sprouts have been used to power up a Christmas tree, but we digress.)
But if you find it hard to get down these nutrient powerhouses, you might want to pay attention to a new study from Pennsylvania State University – especially if you suffer from digestive issues.
By working with mice, researchers there have figured out that when the rodents ate broccoli, they could better tolerate digestive issues that presented like leaky gut and colitis than mice who weren't fed the veg.
"There are a lot of reasons we want to explore helping with gastrointestinal health and one reason is if you have problems, like a leaky gut, and start to suffer inflammation, that may then lead to other conditions, like arthritis and heart disease," said Gary Perdew, professor of agricultural sciences at Penn State. "Keeping your gut healthy and making sure you have good barrier functions so you're not getting this leaky effect would be really big."

إذا كنت تجد أنّه من الصعب ابتلاع مولدات الطاقة الغذائية هذه، فربما عليك أن تولي اهتماما لدراسة جديدة من جامعة ولاية بنسلفانيا، خصوصا إذا كنت تعاني من مشاكل في الهضم.
لقد اكتشف العلماء هناك من خلال تجاربهم على الفئران أنّ القوارض التي تغذّت على البروكلي استطاعت تحمل المشاكل الهضمية كتسرب الأمعاء والتهاب القولون بصورة أفضل من تلك التي لم تتغذى عليه.
وقال غاري بيرديو بروفيسور العلوم الزراعية في ولاية بنسلفانيا: "هناك الكثير من الأسباب التي تدفعنا لاستكشاف كيفية تحسين صحة الجهاز الهضمي. وأحد هذه الأسباب هو أنّه إذا كان لديك مشاكل كتسرب الأمعاء وبدأت تعاني من الإلتهابات، قد يؤدي ذلك إلى حالات أخرى مثل التهاب المفاصل وأمراض القلب". وأضاف: "هناك أثر كبير فعلا للمحافظة على صحة أمعائك والتأكد من سلامة وظائف جدار الأمعاء حتى لا تصاب بالتسرب".
