Prólogo da terceira edição
A primeira edição destas Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas foi feita aos pedaços na Revista Brasileira, pelos anos de 1880. Postas mais tarde em livro, corrigi o texto em vários lugares. Agora que tive de o rever para a terceira edição, emendei ainda alguma coisa e suprimi duas ou três dúzias de linhas. Assim composta, sai novamente à luz esta obra que alguma benevolência parece ter encontrado no público.
Capistrano de Abreu, noticiando a publicação do livro, perguntava: “As Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas são um romance?” Macedo Soares, em carta que me escreveu por esse tempo, recordava amigamente as Viagens na minha terra. Ao primeiro respondia já o defunto Brás Cubas (como o leitor viu e verá no prólogo dele que vai adiante) que sim e que não, que era romance para uns e não o era para outros. Quanto ao segundo, assim se explicou o finado: “Trata-se de uma obra difusa, na qual eu, Brás Cubas, se adotei a forma livre de um Sterne ou de um Xavier de Maistre, não sei se lhe meti algumas rabugens de pessimismo.” Toda essa gente viajou: Xavier de Maistre à roda do quarto, Garret na terra dele, Sterne na terra dos outros. De Brás Cubas se pode dizer que viajou à roda da vida.
O que faz do meu Brás Cubas um autor particular é o que ele chama “rabugens de pessimismo”. Há na alma deste livro, por mais risonho que pareça, um sentimento amargo e áspero, que está longe de vir de seus modelos. É taça que pode ter lavores de igual escola, mas leva outro vinho. Não digo mais para não entrar na crítica de um defunto, que se pintou a si e a outros, conforme lhe pareceu melhor e mais certo.

AO LEITOR
Que Stendhal confessasse haver escrito um de seus livros para cem leitores, coisa é que admira e consterna. O que não admira, nem provavelmente consternará é se este outro livro não tiver os cem leitores de Stendhal, nem cinqüenta, nem vinte e, quando muito, dez. Dez? Talvez cinco. Trata-se, na verdade, de uma obra difusa, na qual eu, Brás Cubas, se adotei a forma livre de um Sterne, ou de um Xavier de Maistre, não sei se lhe meti algumas rabugens de pessimismo. Pode ser. Obra de finado. Escrevi-a com a pena da galhofa e a tinta da melancolia, e não é difícil antever o que poderá sair desse conúbio. Acresce que a gente grave achará no livro umas aparências de puro romance, ao passo que a gente frívola não achará nele o seu romance usual; ei-lo aí fica privado da estima dos graves e do amor dos frívolos, que são as duas colunas máximas da opinião.
Mas eu ainda espero angariar as simpatias da opinião, e o primeiro remédio é fugir a um prólogo explícito e longo. O melhor prólogo é o que contém menos coisas, ou o que as diz de um jeito obscuro e truncado. Conseguintemente, evito contar o processo extraordinário que empreguei na composição destas Memórias, trabalhadas cá no outro mundo. Seria curioso, mas nimiamente extenso, e aliás desnecessário ao entendimento da obra. A obra em si mesma é tudo: se te agradar, fino leitor, pago-me da tarefa; se te não agradar, pago-te com um piparote, e adeus.

CAPÍTULO PRIMEIRO / ÓBITO DO AUTOR
Algum tempo hesitei se devia abrir estas memórias pelo princípio ou pelo fim, isto é, se poria em primeiro lugar o meu nascimento ou a minha morte. Suposto o uso vulgar seja começar pelo nascimento, duas considerações me levaram a adotar diferente método: a primeira é que eu não sou propriamente um autor defunto, mas um defunto autor, para quem a campa foi outro berço; a segunda é que o escrito ficaria assim mais galante e mais novo. Moisés, que também contou a sua morte, não a pôs no intróito, mas no cabo: diferença radical entre este livro e o Pentateuco.
Dito isto, expirei às duas horas da tarde de uma sexta-feira do mês de agosto de 1869, na minha bela chácara de Catumbi. Tinha uns sessenta e quatro anos, rijos e prósperos, era solteiro, possuía cerca de trezentos contos e fui acompanhado ao cemitério por onze amigos. Onze amigos! Verdade é que não houve cartas nem anúncios. Acresce que chovia — peneirava uma chuvinha miúda, triste e constante, tão constante e tão triste, que levou um daqueles fiéis da última hora a intercalar esta engenhosa idéia no discurso que proferiu à beira de minha cova: — “Vós, que o conhecestes, meus senhores, vós podeis dizer comigo que a natureza parece estar chorando a perda irreparável de um dos mais belos caracteres que têm honrado a humanidade. Este ar sombrio, estas gotas do céu, aquelas nuvens escuras que cobrem o azul como um crepe funéreo, tudo isso é a dor crua e má que lhe rói à Natureza as mais íntimas entranhas; tudo isso é um sublime louvor ao nosso ilustre finado.”
Bom e fiel amigo! Não, não me arrependo das vinte apólices que lhe deixei. E foi assim que cheguei à cláusula dos meus dias; foi assim que me encaminhei para o undiscovered country de Hamlet, sem as ânsias nem as dúvidas do moço príncipe, mas pausado e trôpego como quem se retira tarde do espetáculo. Tarde e aborrecido. Viram-me ir umas nove ou dez pessoas, entre elas três senhoras, minha irmã Sabina, casada com o Cotrim, a filha, — um lírio do vale, — e...Tenham paciência!

Prologue of the third edition
The first edition of these Posthumous Memories of Brás Cubas was made in pieces on the Revista Brasileira, along the years of 1880. Put together later as a book, I corrected the text in various places. Now that I had to review it for the third edition, I still amended something and supressed two or three dozen lines. This way composed, comes to light again this work that some benevolence seems to have found on the public.
Capristiano de Abreu, notifying the book's publication, asked: "The Posthumous Memories of Brás Cubas are a romance?" In this book's soul there is, as laughing as it may be, a feeling bitter and rough, that is far from coming from his models. It is a glass that can have labors of the same school, mas holds other wine. I will not say more as to not enter the critic of a deceased, who has painted himself and others, according to what it seemed to him as best and most correct.

That Stendhal should confess having written one of his books for a hundred readers, is a thing both astonishing and dismaying. What does not astonish, nor probably will dismay is if this other book does not have the hundered readres of Stendhal, nor fifty, nor twenty and, when many, ten. Ten? Maybe five. Regarding the second, the deceased explained himself like this: "It's about a difuse work, in which I, Brás Cubas, have adopted myself the free form of a Sterne or of a Xavier de Maistre, I don't know if I have put some grumps of pessimism." Consequently, I avoid telling the extraordinary process I employed on the compositions of these memories, worked on here in the other world. It would be curious, but not only extense, and in fact desnecessary to the understanding of the work. The work in in itself everything: if it pleases you, fine reader, I pay myself of the task; if it does not please you, I pay you with a flick, and goodbye.

FIRST CHAPTER / AUTHOR'S DEATH
For some time I hesitated if I should open these memories from the beginning of from the end, that is, if I would put in first place my birth or my death. Supposed the vulgar use to be to start from birth, two considerations take me to adopt a different method: the first is that I am not exactly a deceased author, but rather an author deceased, for who the grave was another craddle; the second is that the written
would be more gallant and newer. Moses, that too told of his death, did not place it in the introduction, but in the end: radical difference between this book and the Pentateuch.
With this said, I expired at two'clock in the afternoon of Friday in the month of August of 1869, in my beautiful farmhouse in Catumbi. I had about sixty-four years, rigids and prosperous, I was single, possesed around three hundred contos (de réis) and was accompannied to the cemitery by eleven friends. Eleven friends! Thruth is that there were no letters nor announcements. Added that it rained — it poured a tiny rain, sad and constant, so constant and so sad, that led one of those believers of the last hour to intercalate this ingenious idea in the speech that he uttered at the edge of my grave: — "You, that knew him, my sirs, you can say with me that nature appears to be crying the irreparable loss of one of the most beautiful characters that have honoured humanity. And that was how I arrived at the clause of my days; this was how I forwarded myself to the undiscovered country of Hamlet, without the cravings nor the doubts of the young prince, but paused and stumbling like one who withdraws themselves late from the spectacle.
