Clive MacDougall-Purnell, originally from the United Kingdom, spent 18 years in Japan between 1982 and 2000, and remains fluent in the language. He now lives in Vancouver, Canada but makes regular trips back to Tokyo.
As an undergraduate at Coventry University in the UK, Clive took a modular degree called “Combined Engineering Science” which allowed him to study both mechanical and electrical/electronic engineering – a mix that would prove extremely useful later when he settled into a career in documentation.
After graduating, Clive traveled to Japan to teach English to engineers. Finding an affinity with the country and its people, he chose to stay and subsequently moved into technical writing and editing. The majority of his work over the next ten years had links with Fujitsu Ltd., although other clients included Sony, Ricoh, and Hitachi.
In 1986, Clive took a year off work to study Japanese at the Asahi Culture Centre in Tokyo, and subsequently passed the Level 1 exam of the Nihongo Noryoku Shiken (Japanese Language Proficiency Test).
Then, in 1994, Clive embarked on an executive MBA program with Durham University in the UK, graduating in 1997.
In May of 2004, Clive sat and passed the certification examination for the Board of Editors in the Life Sciences (BELS) (www.bels.org). |
