: I honestly can't see a notion of haste (or 'race') in the French. Only seem to be able to reply here ! I really feel the stress is on MIEUX, i.e. the clever chap who puts his finger on the social pulse BEST (see my comment to suggestion above)

In the context it doesn't matter much, but the expression itself certainly doesn't mean "let's see who does it best", as example 2 above shows. In this article about a dog show, it means "they all want to be petted by him":
