French term

compagnie d'affaires

French to English Other Business/Commerce (general)
From a translation about a company that rents out aircraft to businesses, business people, etc, in which they describe their aim of becoming a leading "compagnie d'affaires". Is the term "business company" widely used to describe a company that offers services to other businesses?

business jet leading company

I think that they refer themselves as "compagnie d'affaire" as the short for "Compagnie d'aviation d'affaires" (ref2) and unlike traditionnal airlines companies

aviation d'affaires = business jet (ref1)

agree Aude Sylvain : I am not sure of the translation but fully agree w. you that 'compagnie' in Fr-Fr (unlike Ca-Fr AFAIK) is mainly used for 'compagnie aérienne'; this specif. meaning isn't conveyed by Eng 'company' (=société) on its own. Then 'jet co.' may be a good idea.

agree David Sirett : ...assuming you meant "leasing", and not necessarily "jet".

neutral joehlindsay : leading should go first, 'a leading business jet leasing company', and I think aviation d'affaires is 'corporate aviation' rather than 'business jet', and in professional parlance, I think 'corporate jet' is more used than business jet (colloquial).

B2B or business-to-business company

I thought this was generally used for e-business, but according to wiki and other info found on the web, it can now be broadly applied to any business that provides services to other businesses.

"B2B is also commonly used as an adjective to describe any activity, be it B2B marketing, sales, or e-commerce, that occurs between businesses and other businesses rather than between businesses and consumers."

professional services company

This is the traditional term, and still more widely used than B2B.

business services provider or company

Business services providers are simply companies that provide services to other companies such as employment agencies, computer support companies, business travel agencies, etc. B2B is not incorrect, but it is shorthand and I don't think it is formal enough for professional communication.

If you just want a translation for 'compagnie d'affaires, I'd say 'business services provider'. However, although the context is not clear, I would probably not go word for word in this case but say something like 'their goal is to be a leader in corporate aircraft leasing'.

business aviation company

Assuming that Sebastien is right, then my first shot was way off mark. However a translation is still required and I can't agree with Sébastien's. Jets are not specified (they could lease helicopters ...).

Reference:

A company renting/leasing/chartering aircraft to business customers/clients is not usually referred to as an airline in that context, although of course it may also run scheduled or charter airline services.

We have to go with what the asker says the company actually does, not what we might want the French term to mean.

agree Aude Sylvain : agree - and agree that we have to be able to go beyond our first understanding of the meaning of the French term when necessary :)
