Explanation:
I just checked that last reference that Sven gave. It makes it clear that you can´t use Rüde for "dog", or even "male dog", because the term also covers wolves, coyotes, jackals and foxes.

Rüde actually seems to be a categorisation of animals for which there is no equivalent in the English language.

The German for "dog" is "Hund" (or "Hündin", for a female).
