French term

Une adresse de référence

French to English Other Advertising / Public Relations
This comes at the end of a paragraph about a shop selling upmarket electrical appliances, theres a full stop and then "Une adresse de référence..." I have found "flagship, benchmark" but I don't think I can put "flagship address".
I can't put "THE address par excellence" as it doesn't say "L'adresse de référence". Any ideas? :)

Jack Dunwell Jun 7, 2010:
Leading Marques de référence= leading brands (say)
Leading store/ outlet/retailer.
eg Harrods "Purveyor of fine goods" to give a moribund 19thC slant!
imatahan Jun 6, 2010:
Why not a main address?
Travelin Ann Jun 6, 2010:
"Starting with two employees in a small storefront, CG Appliance Express has since become the place to shop for many people in the Bay Area.... Serving the bay area as a premier resource for your complete kitchen remodel."

Louisa Tchaicha (asker) Jun 6, 2010:
ah sorry, here is the sentence before: " à l'intérieur de cet espace, les marques de référence telles que X, Y &Z sont évidemment représentées mais également des enseignes pointues telles que A et B comme les impressinants réfrigérateurs X, les radiateurs design Y. Une adresse de référence. I could maybe put "An address not to be missed"
Louisa Tchaicha (asker) Jun 6, 2010:
No it's a magazine article.
Travelin Ann Jun 6, 2010:
Could you possibly give us the previous sentence? Is this a marketing brochure, an advert or ?

Often, a manufacturer creates the brochure with a blank space, for the individual vendor to overprint with the details of their shop.
Louisa Tchaicha (asker) Jun 6, 2010:
The "..." after "une adresse de référence" is an ellipsis. The context is a shop that sells many brands of electrical appliances .
Travelin Ann Jun 6, 2010:
Sheila Wilson Jun 6, 2010:
It really isn't very clear You've posted this as PR, but can you give any more details about the type of document, please? Is it followed by an address? (I doubt it but it's always possible). As Ann says, context in French would help.
Travelin Ann Jun 6, 2010:
Could you possibly give us the context in French? It would make it much easier for us to assist you.

It could be as simple as "Available at xxx" or "Authorized vendor"

A leader

So much depends on both register and context that itt's difficult to be sure. However, one word I would NOT use in English is "address".

Some possibilities:
A leader in electrical appliances
The place to go for your electrical appliances
A leader/An expert in the field
A market leader

Depending again on the register of the text, and bearing in mind the additional information that this is a magazine article, I might even translate it as: "check it out!"
Peer comment(s):

agree Travelin Ann : I like "the place to go" - I think that is close to the meaning in the discussion quote I posted//Perhaps The place to shop in this case

Thanks, Ann. I think a lot depends on the wording of the rest of the paragraph // I could go with that, certainly
agree cmwilliams (X) : I also like "the place to go"

Thanks. I certainly think this is the meaning of the source
agree writeaway : this is the gist but there are countless ways to express it.

Thanks. I quite agree and it needs to fit in with the tome of the magazine article

Thanks
agree Evans (X) : I totally agree with you that "address" is absolutely to be avoided in English. I often have to translate this French expression when referring to high-end hotels, restaurants and other places vying for the attention of discerning/moneyed customers

Thanks. I think it's an important point to make. Address is just the place named on an envelope

Mailing address

Il s’agit d’une adresse qui permet à certaines personnes qui n’habitent pas ou qui n’ont pas de résidence en Belgique d’avoir néanmoins une adresse de contact dans une commune belge. L’adresse de référence est une adresse purement « administrative ».
Example sentence:

Inquiries can be set to our mailing address

The brand name(s)

In other words the top names on the list. Referring to "les marques de référence'', the fashionable brands or to go by.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Sheila Wilson : I'm not sure that works for a shop selling other people's brands

Hello,

This may work here, depending on the register.

As suggested, don't translate this by "address" in English.

I hope this helps.
