Russian term

Романтика (на природе)

Russian to English Art/Literary Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
"Его с юнешеских лет привлекала романтика - турпоходы, встречи Нового года в лесу..."
Obviously, this won't be a direct translation (not to mention how anyone in their right mind could think spending New Year in the woods is romantic, even idiomatically speaking ;)
MY VERSION: SENSE of ADVENTURE
But there has to be something about this idiomatic *романтика* that I'm missing?

Alexandra~
I totally understand the connotation between "romantic" and "adventurous" in literary English (please note that my own translation attempt, which appears IN CAPS under the question, is "a sense of adventure").

But in my opinion, using "romantic" to denote adventure is beginning to sound dated. As you noted, "romantic" and "romanticism" are easily confused. I posted this translation question specifically because I wanted to avoid using "romantic" and was looking for other options.
Alexandra Taggart Dec 16, 2010:
"Adventurous" is the first synonym of "romantic" in the list of synonyms. I cannot see anything wrong with using it in this context. You appear to have mistaken "romantic" with "romanticism". "Romantic" in English means "dreamy" or "dream-like", it is close to "ideal". Yet, again! We're converting the meaning of that which has been said, not the words!
Kiwiland Bear Dec 15, 2010:
I agree... and that's why avoided it in my suggested version. Was trying to give you some background is all.
PaulinaK (asker) Dec 15, 2010:
The finished translation should be accessible to a wide audience, including "young adults" (teens). It should therefore stay relatively straight-forward and avoid sounding dated. If using "romantic" in this context sounds off to me as an educated adult, it will probably come across wrong to the younger readers.
Kiwiland Bear Dec 15, 2010:
Was going to say the same - Russian "романтик" is quite different in meaning compared to the English romantic (or romance). And yes, many people would consider it quite "романтик" to have a New Year deep in a forest near a decorated Yule tree still on its roots.
JoeYeckley (X) Dec 15, 2010:
Depends on your audience There are still literate readers who would understand that romance has more senses than just man+woman+candles. For those readers the sense of "romance" in greeting the new year in the woods would be understood, even if not shared.

He liked going wild

Still, adventure looks like the right word for the purposes of the dictionary definition — romance (an exciting and mysterious quality (as of a heroic time or adventure)) — http://goo.gl/wSu3J

neutral Alexandra Taggart : "to go wild" means "to play at being crazy"."Romance" is "falling in love".

He always enjoyed the engrossing sensations of being in the woods on New Years.

A free translation, but if you want to avoid terms that may be misconstrued, something expansive is going to be needed.

neutral Kiwiland Bear : Perhaps "fascination" if you want to go in that direction?
