French term

titre de circulation

French to English Other Transport / Transportation / Shipping
Titre de circulation français (carte grise normale) and
Titre de circulation européen both occur in a document I have been asked to review

a carte grise is a kind of vehicle registration document but for "titre de circulation" I keep finding the translation "travel pass" which to me implies a pass that you would use on public transportation. Am I missing something? Is there another possible translation for "titre de circulation" or can "travel pass" mean some kind of vehicle documentation I don't know about?

MDR Indeed!

@Nikki And if you look at the small print in other languages below Certificat d'immatriculation you'll find Permiso de circulacion, Registration certificate, Carta di circolazione, amongst others.
AND, on the last page, you can still request a nouvelle carte grise!
Nikki Scott-Despaigne Oct 11, 2011:
Titre de circulation The term is sometimes used to describe a driving licence or a vehicle registration document, the former confirming the holder's entitlement to drive a vehicle of the class(es) specified, the latter confirming the vehicle's compliance with registration requirements.

The fact that the term "carte grise" appears sugegst that your term relates to the vehicle registration document. However, this term has changed (see my previous post) but continues to be referred to by many - and indeed in many official sources - as the 'carte grise".

My vehicle documents and my driving licence are French. I have had a "carte grise" and now have a "certificat d'immatriculation".

Liz Askew's answer would appear to be right but again, without complete context...
Nikki Scott-Despaigne Oct 11, 2011:
Original context please! Good evening Imogen,

Please could you post an extract from your original in context?
Does the term psoted here appear as :
"titre de circulation français (carte grise normale)"?
Who produced the document and who is your target reader?
Note : You may or may not know that the standard vehicle registration document was re-vamped a couple of years ago and is now called a "certificat d'immatriculation" :

Titre de transport would be a ticket (such as a train Ticket). Titre de circulation, would be more like a registration document. Basically, what entitles you to be using a vehicle in the country.

Please could we have the full sentence in which the phrase occurs.
