Opérations d'exploitation

français vers anglais Technique / Génie Ingénierie : industriel
Hello everyone, I have found this term translated in a personal proz glossary as "operations" however in my document, which is a user manual on a weapon, I need to be more specific since there are different types of operations and the "opérations d'exploitation" are more like the operations for proper use, there are sequences described for these actions, for the cleaning, the use, the storage...
It is used as a title for different work sheets, in which the detailed tasks are described, I don't really have a lot of inspiration.

Discussion

chris collister Nov 20, 2014:
FR loves to use "opérations" to qualify, or be qualified by, some other process. In many cases it is often redundant, at least in EN. I make a distinction between "procedure" and "operation", the former instructing how to carry out the latter. "Exploitation" is just "operating" or "running", and given that "operating operations" sounds pretty silly, "Operation" on its own should suffice, ditto "inspection" for "inspection operations".

Indeed, you are right Tony, there are "opérations de contrôle" wich describe all the inspection procedures, "opérations de maintenance" including work sheets for the "maintenance préventive et corrective".

It might help to know what the other types of 'opérations' are, so we can compare; as well as to know how you are translating the others, so we can attempt to remain consistent across them all.

Operating procedures

I wonder whether you're talking about Standard Operating Procedures here? But not my field at all and I suspect weaponry may have a language all of its own.

All firearms are potentially lethal. It is essential that the safety and operating procedures recommended by the manufacturer are precisely followed, and that all operators are properly trained in safe operation and maintenance.

usage/application instructions

It sounds to me like we are talking about instructions for the actual usage. I also found the use of the term application in a weapons context. See:

Seeing as it is a manual, I personally prefer the term "instructions" to "operations", but you have the wider context in mind, so you can choose which is more appropriate.
