French term

THOT

Non-PRO French to English Tech/Engineering Environment & Ecology
There are many hundreds of references to "THOT" on the web but none explain what it is.
A typical reference is "LA DECHARGE DU **THOT** Pourquoi faut-il arrêter ce dépôt dordures"
My own sense is that it may refer to illegal "tipping" (UK) or "dumping" (NAm).
Or I may be wildly wrong.
Can anyone help? :-)

Definitely a (closed) landfill near Montpellier Did you look up Phil's Wikipedia link?

"Le 18 janvier 1966, la Safer vend à l'État 52 hectares au sud de Maurin, à la limite avec la commune de Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone. La Ville de Montpellier qui en dispose y ouvre une décharge publique [...]. En 1972, le terrain est vendu au District de Montpellier qui exploite la décharge du Thôt à partir de 1988 [...]."

If you look up Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone and Maurin on a map, you will find that these places, and the Thot landfill which is located between them, are maybe 10 km to the south of the centre of Montpellier.

@ phil With all due respect, I'm not sure that you're right. Another reference in the doc is "Etude et maîtrise d’œuvre des travaux d’extension du CET classe 2 du THOT à Montpellier".
The place Le Thot is actually 400 km from Montpellier, which begs the question what "THOT à Montpellier" means. "CET" means "Centre d'enfouissement Technique" = landfill site. It surely does not mean extending the Class 2 landfill site from Thot to Montpellier...

@ phil I know what décharge means. What I was asking was whether THOT may be an acronym for something as the rest of this document is riddled with acronyms. I presume you're saying that THOT is simply the name of a place?

It's the name of a place. Décharge means landfill. This is very easy to find by Googling. http://fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maurin_(Lattes)
