Swedish term or phrase: spridning kan ske pga vattengenomströmning
How would you translate the phrase "spridning kan ske ... på grund av vattengenomströmning" in the context below?

"Muddringen [...] kommer att ske innanför vågbrytarna. Vågbrytarna kommer att förhindra spridning av sediment till det öppna havsområdet utanför hamnen, men viss begränsad spridning kan ske genom hamninloppet på grund av vattengenomströmning."

I have seen "vattengenomströmning" translated as "water flow" or similar in other cases. However, in this context, the "vågbrytarna" are supposed to *prevent* water flow (to some extent, at least), so it seems to me that "vattengenomströmning" must refer to a more specific type of flow.

spreading may occur ... as a result of water through-flow

Explanation:
("diffusion" is technically incorrect. It is extremely unidiomatic in English, because "diffusion" is an engineering term of art (see below). It is also ambiguous, because the colloquial meaning of "diffusion" is "distribution", which the author has not asserted and is non-obvious.
Complete rendering:
The dredging [...] will occur inside the breakwaters. The breakwaters will prevent the spreading of sediment to the open sea area outside the port, but some limited spreading may occur through the harbor inlet as a result of water through-flow.

disagree  Thomas Johansson: "Spridning" here means "diffusion" in the sense of the water with the dissolved sediment extending slowly in different directions and especially out from the harbor area to the clean water outside the harbor.

Asker: Do you think that "dispersion" might be a better term than "spreading" here?

neutral  TechLawDC: "vattengenomströmning" might mean "through-flow", "penetration", or "bypass flow". I seriously doubt it means "seepage", which would make minimal technical sense. The volume of spreading by seepage would be near zero.

disagree  Thomas Johansson: This doesn't make sense. There is no mention of any seepage, and to speak of "seepage" through a harbor inlet doesn't make sense.

spridning kan ske p.g.a. vattengenomströmning
diffusion can occur due to water flows

Explanation:
Hamninloppet är förmodligen en öppning som ligger mellan vågbrytarna. Vågbrytarna hindrar sediment från att spridas där de är placerade men sediment kan fortfarande läcka ut genom hamninloppet.

I would appreciate if people could be a little bit more serious before they start throwing criticisms around. KudoZ is about helping people find the best translations and there should be no need to make false statements about other people's answers.
