French term

loin du compte

French to English Bus/Financial Journalism
Hello 'ProZ nation!' ;^)
I need help with an expression, found in an article published in LeMonde.com on 2/18 regarding the Executive Life case. This passage states that the parties in issue are not succeeding in reaching a settlement. Here's the sentence:
"A trois jours de l'ultimatum, fixé le 1er décembre, on est encore très loin du compte."

the end is nowhere in sight

Either "the end is nowhere in sight" or "there is still a long way to go"

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The drought parching the Northeast, already one of the worst in decades, continues to lower groundwater levels, damage crops and force states to increase water restrictions. And experts say the end is nowhere in sight.

agree roneill : I like your "long way to go" option, because it renders the "loin" in the source.

not even close

literally, "far from adding up correctly", this seems to be the way the term is usually employed.
Peer comment(s):

agree Bourth (X) : A good "generic" solution (it's one of those expressions that can be adapted to circumstances; or am I far from the truth?)

we are still far from reaching a resolution

other options:

we are still far from...

reaching our objective
reaching a settlement
"seeing the light at the end of the tunnel"

OR

we have yet to...

reach our objective
etc.

depends on the rest of the paragraph!
Peer comment(s):

agree RHELLER : very far
