to tom fire og fire tom
Norwegian to English

sawmill
I am translating a book, a Norwegian series, and the action takes place in a sawmill.
A customer wants to order beams/planks to build a summer barn and the dimensions are given as "to tom fire og fire tom".
Does someone know what are the dimensions in centimeters or inches? Can someone decipher the phrase, so that I know how to translate it?
Mange takk!

Planks etc are still sold in Sweden as "två tums med fyra tums" or "2 x 4" cross section, but this seems to have died out in Norway.
I suspect that the redundant extra "fire" is because it is reported speech, as "2 x4 inches" could be translated as "to tom fire" *and* "to tum og fire", and the speaker is mixing them together informally.
Unless you are translating a story about the middle ages.
