with the wife being indemnified Explanation: how about something like: 'De studieschuld van circa €xxx bij DUO komt voor rekening van de man, zulks onder vrijwaring van de vrouw.' = 'The study debt of approximately €xxx at DUO shall be borne by the husband, with the wife being indemnified.' -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 40 mins (2023-08-03 14:18:30 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- see e.g.: "Where the property of a married woman is mortgaged or charged in order to raise money for the benefit of her husband, it is presumed, in the absence of evidence showing an intention to the contrary, that, as between her husband and herself, she meant to charge her property merely as a surety. In such a case, she is, as between her husband and herself, in the position of surety and entitled both to be indemnified by the husband and to throw the debt primarily on his estate to the exoneration of her own …" (https://fortefamilylawyers.com.au/negative-property-pools-an... ) "The court also indemnified the husband against any of the debts contracted by Lady Vane during their separation." Het werkwoord ‘indemnify’ wordt vaak in combinatie met ‘hold harmless’ gebruikt; beide termen worden veelal als synoniemen gezien, ook in geschillen, hoewel sommigen volhouden dat er wel een verschil is. mr.drs. zulks onder vrijwaring van ... whilst holding ... safe and harmless Explanation: The turn of phrase, as usual, is neither redundant, nor otiose, as the husband will need to reimburse the wife is she pays up. not very different (BrE) to (AmE) than the first answer, but just stylistically rebalanced. zulks, such > in the event, namely or to wit, rather than the husband 'sulking'. onder vs. ender vrijwaring ... My suggestion: 'The study loan debt approximating to €xxx with DUO shall be payable by the husband, whilst holding the wife safe and harmless (keeping the wife indemnified for the purpose or in that behalf vs. on his behalf).'
