Good morning! I agree with what you say; unfortunately, lusatia has left us a little short of context, as we don't actually know WHAT this valve (if it is one) is for; it looks as if it's in some circuit which can attract condensation, but that's only an educated guess, knowing railway vehicles fairly well as I do.

@ lusatia: had you given the Italian phrase, we might perhaps have been able to approach our efforts to help with a little more confidence...We still don't know exactly what type of vehicle this is, do we? If it's the same one for all the questions, it has to be a motor-coach for one of the third-rail S-Bahn systems or the Southern Region of British Rail, deduced from the 'collector shoe suspension bar'

this checklist item must be be made unambiguous.
Either it's "Check DRAINS (indicating the labelling on the vent) position ...", then it is only a matter of formatting, or
it's "Check drain(')s(') position of the bevel gear vent", then I would ask myself (especially being the operator) what position the drain is to be supposed in - and that would be unsafe!
Having worked with checklists all of my previous life I would have then expected "Check drain(')s(') of the bevel gear vent in position CLOSED/OPEN/NEUTRAL/AUTO/WHATEVER".

Thank you all for your suggestions. Both Bernd's and David's expressions make sense to me, but I'm not completely sure which of them fits the context.
