English term

people

English Social Sciences Human Resources
I am not sure how to understand the word "people" in the following context. This is from a newsletter of the Human Resources team of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. It may be very straightforward, but I just want to be sure. The word occurs twice, possibly in the same sense:

1 - The purely administrative side of dealing with staff has been placed into a unit (Service Centre) which provides various *people* services to each Director.

2 - The training priorities agreed for 2006-2007 are:
• All *people* managers would attend a further module of the Commissions’ Development Programme (etc.)

Any ideas? Thanks!

human resources

Substitute "human resources" for "people" and it'll be clear to you. One option.

agree conejo : Yes. Consider that "people" = "personnel" and it should make more sense.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks willmatter, I suppose you're right. I still think it's a funny way to express it though - "people managers"! Sounds as if it's people managers as opposed to animal managers!! Or maybe it's just me..."

staff

It seems both cases deal with staff management strategies.

The people they refer to are the company people, in short, the personnel.

And managers to all persons concerned. This could be staff but also other persons involved.

This is my take anyway despite the nasty comments being made about me in the forums. I hope it helps.
Peer comment(s):

agree Christine Andersen : People is a plural without a singular, and uses person (understood neutrally/warmly), but 'persons' often has very cold and distant associations, which are inappropriate in this context. I might go for one of the other answers to translate from English.

supporting services

I agree that this comes under the HR umbrella but it is just part of the services they provide.

these type of services are basically just helping people with stuff they don't know how to or can't do themselves like
- legal services or finding them a lawyer for visas
- accountant or tax help
- medical providers for families of staff
- helping them find housing
- dealing with benefits problems that are really large (like when a new employee arrives with a sick child and they haven't passed the 30-day waiting period)

a bunch of little stuff to help the employees function in their work life
Peer comment(s):

agree Yolanda Broad : or support services

that's better, thanks :-)
agree William [Bill] Gray : Taking the contrast in the first sentence between "staff" and "people" I think this is a more likely suggestion. Good one, Rita!

personnel

There is still much debate as to whether it should be Personnel Management or HRM. I am normally an advocate of using Human Resources but I feel in this case personnel may fit better.

I think for the purpose of what you are working on either Human Resource or Personnel are fine. I would go with the latter.
