Come on, guys, this one's easy :)
"Acide octylphosphonique: ce constituant, dit aussi ***acide octane-1-phosphonique***, est utilisable à la concentration maximale pondérale de 5 %"
So far, I have "Octylphosphonic acid: this constituent, also called 1-octane phosphonic acid ..."
But I'm not sure I've got it in the right order.
This should be the last chemical from me, at least until next week, when the client is sending me a missing page ...

It's **wrong** to specify 1-
Phophonic acid has to be at the one position, just like carboxylic acids. You cannot write
a structure where a phosphonic group is anywhere else but the 1 position.

You can also name it as octyl phosphonic acid (the above reference shows the dimethyl
ester of octyl phosphonic acid.

You would be safer without specifying the position 1

Thanks to all three for your hard work. I am giving Zareh the points because Google supports his version. However, I've agreed with the client that I will just highlight the 1-something-4-something type names and they will put in formulae instead - phew!!! I don't think it would be responsible for me to vouch for something I get so confused by myself.

You are right, Zareh. I will put 'octane phosphonic acid' in. For the more complex ones, I am giving them a suggested translation, but it will be their responsibility to confirm it in-house by checking the formula.
I can't thank you enough for your help on this. Send me the formula for chocolate cake, and I'll bake you one :)

Hi Gabrielle: If you google for octane phosphonic acid, or octyl phosphonic acid, you will find them,
right? If you google for 1-octane phosphonicd acid, you will not.

No wonder I get confused!
I always Google chemical names. It's an excellent way of finding out what ISN'T an accepted term - trouble is, it doesn't work so well for confirming what is - especially with all the dodgy translations out there. Bet I could find 'oxygenated water' for eau oxygene if I looked ....

It seems that the French does specify the 1 position. But in English nomenclature we don't.

For instance we don't say 1-pentanoic acid, because the COOH group is always at the 1 position. We say pentanoic acid.

Gabrielle: I asked a professor here. He said the phosphonic acid group is not going to be in the
middle of an alkane chain. This implies that it's always at the end, which means it's always at position
one. Once again, try google.

Gabrielle: If you type 1-octane phophonic acid or 1-octyl phosphonic acid in google, you will not get
a single hit! If you type octane phonsphonic acid (IUPAC name) or octyl phosphonic acid, then you will
get hits... I think this clarifies it..?
