French term

en dérivation

French to English Tech/Engineering Environment & Ecology reservoir management
I am wondering whether the 'dérivation' here is a by-pass or whether it could mean some sort of 'hydraulic shunt' of water.

Here's another bit that makes me think they could be talking about a shunt (although I am not sure that is the right term in the context):

anything to take me away... .... from this.... it has been going on for too long. I am glad you have said that, Bourth, because I really thought it was some sort of by-pass or diversion of water than anything mechanical...
texasweed Dec 20, 2006:
Yes, that is what it is. Sidestream.
French2English (asker) Dec 20, 2006:
or does it mean... .... via a 'sidestream' (just came across that term after posting the question)...

diversion

Not that I want to take you away from your work, but it might be that water is diverted (from the path it would otherwise take) into the reservoir. Presumably a certain amount of runoff would flow naturally into the reservoir (unless it is totally surrounded by embankments), but maybe the greater part is diverted from adjacent streams.

"fed by diversion of runoff"
