French term

calque

French to English Marketing Textiles / Clothing / Fashion shop window dressing
This is describing how to set up the window display which includes a large transparent 'sheet' suspended from the ceiling with a leopard spotted pattern so that the light shines through it to create a leopard spotted shadow pattern on the rear wall of the display.

Calque léopard L90 à env. 30cm du sol

I have not been able to confirm any of the usual possible translations for 'calque' (transparency, stencil) for a use in this context, any ideas out there??

Many thanks for your help

Discussion

Jane Phillips (asker) Jul 18, 2015:
Have to say I like the idea of shadow stencil which keep the idea of calque and explains what it does. I don't have to deliver until Monday so I'll hang on in case someone has a better suggestion.
Yvonne Gallagher Jul 18, 2015:
Hi Jane, that's a tough one. I've done some searching through window display companies and have come up with zilch really. But I think perhaps "(transparent) leopard-print stencil" might be your best bet. Or your longer explanation which at least makes it fairly clear what it is. I thought of using "film" or "transparency" but meaning could be ambiguous. I wouldn't use "overlay" as it's not the same thing at all for this context of hanging in window.
Elizabeth Tamblin Jul 18, 2015:
Perhaps "overlay" - based on one of Larousse's definitions: "Reproduction d'un dessin sur un papier transparent qui le recouvre".

shadow stencil

In the description at the begining, the person says this is how to make a "light pattern clear thing". Not exactly the same as yours, but in cotnext, it should work well.

agree Yvonne Gallagher : not sure "shadow" is necessary as I think (hanging) "stencil" gets idea across
