I am hopeless at the science involved here. Have looked all over to no avail. The sentence in question is

「本発明者は、上記課題を解決するため鋭意研究を行った結果、αシヌクレインなどの線維状構造物を神経細胞内に導入すると、当該導入された細胞は神経変性疾患のモデル細胞となり得ることを見出し、本発明を完成するに至った。」

I have produced two possible translations:

1) As the result of concerted study directed towards solving the aforementioned problem, the present inventors arrived at the present invention upon discovering that a model cell for neurodegenerative diseases could be obtained through insertion of α-synuclein or a similar fibrous structure into a nerve cell.

2) As the result of concerted study directed towards solving the aforementioned problem, the present inventors arrived at the present invention upon discovering that insertion of α-synuclein or a similar fibrous structure into a nerve cell could cause the cell into which the fibrous structure was inserted to become a model cell for neurodegenerative diseases.

Which interpretation (if either) is correct? Many thanks.

Could
Explanation:
As the result of concerted study directed towards solving the aforementioned problem, the present inventors arrived at the present invention upon discovering that introduction (or transfection) of a fibrillar protein such as (α-synuclein) [a protein with fibrillar structure)into a nerve cell could establish (produce, construct) a neural cell model for neurodegenerative diseases.

could cause ... to become

Explanation:
The second translation seems more correct because it specifies that the cell that changes is the one that was inserted with the fibers, while the first translation leaves that ambiguously in the dark.

I based my answer on the Japanese. As for your question it was "which interpretation is correct", not "what is the science behind this". Considering the Japanese, it is likely that the cell is going to grow into something that it was not before the insertion of the foreign material. That is typical experimental procedure of cell biology.

Asker: Thank you!

Asker: Upon what did you base your answer? What I need to know is not only the standard translation used here but also the science. Does the cell actually "change"?

Asker: Thanks for clarifying.

Asker: This jibes with what I have heard elsewhere. Many thanks.
