Norwegian term

jaktbytte

Norwegian to English Other Food & Drink hunting
The hunter returns from a reindeer/deer hunt with a dead animal.
Is there a word in english for the dead carcass a hunter brings home?
Not to hang on a wall as a Trophy, but to use for practical purposes like hide and food?
Prey is the word for an animal killed by a preditor (non-human animal).
Do we say prey in English? My dictionaries are unclear on that point.
Proposed translations (English)
3 +1 quarry
3 kill

obsolete Yes, I found that interesting, too. I was not aware of it until after I had posted my answer.

obsolete interesting how Merriam Webster calls this term obsolete!
Steinar Beddari Jun 14, 2013:
'Prey' is hunted by a predator (another animal). Also I agree with Jeffrey here in that 'quarry' reads a bit more like something still being hunted.
Norskpro Jun 14, 2013:
I thought quarry could be used for both the hunted and the dead animal. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/quarry
Maybe prey is the right term: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/prey
Christopher Schröder Jun 14, 2013:
Bambi! Quarry was also my first thought. I think it could be used in this way. Or what about haul?
I am, however, from a tofu-munching vegetarian household so maybe not best qualified to comment :-)
jeffrey engberg (asker) Jun 14, 2013:
quarry = what is hunted... I have the feeling quarry implies the thing still being hunted, not the final spoils?

kill

If you're looking for a word that specifies that the animal is already dead, this might be it. I can't think of any other term that is not also used for hunted animals while they are still alive.

For fishing, we have the much clearer 'catch', but unfortunately it's not used in hunting.

An option is to simply use 'game' or 'quarry', and let the reader deduce from the context that the animal is, in fact, dead.

agree Charles Ek : "In addition to increasing risk of losing the deer, a poor hit results in higher stress, which can degrade meat tenderness and flavor even if you do recover your quarry." – http://www.northamericanwhitetail.com/2013/05/08/field-dress...
