I think the primary difference between something "known only to you" and something confidential is that the later implies that the information is shared between two or more parties but is kept secret and not revealed where as when something is "known only to you" it is literally only known to that person and NOONE has or ever has had access that information. I think that would be true for password, usernames and codes, however a confirmation order is obviously known to both the consumer and company that issued that number thus it stands to reason that it would be "kept confidential." It's a subtle but significant difference. In this particular example, we are referring to airline tickets whose confirmation number would of course be known by the company that issued it to look up the customer in their records.

Response to Maruti Shinde: when a forum requires examples from the "net" or internet if you wish, then I am under the impression that it is important to cite references to back up your claims. If you are insinuating that simply making up a sentence with your example is sufficient and doing research is somehow dogmatic then I don't know what to tell you. This is an online INTERNET community and would go out on an a limb and say if on the whole internet there is not one proper usage of a term or phrase, I may have to assume that it may not be the most fitting of answers. Especially since it is the translation of the Russian Railways site. As a native speaker, I can also claim that something is correct because it sounds right, however that is not of a convincing argument. Therefore I try to make sure the other options are ruled out and propose suggestions with examples and references. I don't think disagreement warrants an attack. Don't appreciate your comment. Next time, prove that your answer has merit, then you might be able take criticism without being so defensive.
