French term or phrase: collage de deux feuilles noires pour encadrer le dessin
This is a drawing by René Gruau advertising Eau Sauvage. The sentence reads: Encre et feutre noire, gouache et collage de deux feuilles noires pour encadrer le dessin
Just not sure what to put for collage - I can't show you the picture but the black appears to be 'overlaid' and features on both sides, setting the picture off strikingly

collage of two black fields of colour framing the design
Explanation:
When one looks at the image, sheets doesn't actually work. The fields of black are indeterminate, but sit forward in the design of the poster appearing to occupy a different space from the image of the couple in the centre of the poster. Collage is fine since the different elements are pretty distinct from one another and have the effect of being stuck together.

Or might be this one, but description would work just as well:

Another alternative would be to say 'two black planes', though I think 'fields of colour' is less ambiguous.

Thank you to all who offered their help. I have also put the layered collage idea to the client (if they can find out what the fabric used is). Much appreciated.

neutral  Tony M: 'matting' doesn't sound correct to me, and 'sheets' baldly on its own like this risks sounding too much like 'bed sheets' (draps de lit)

collage/composition of two black sheets to frame the design

Explanation:
I would leave the word "collage" as it is also used in English.

I did see an original picture of René Gruau advertising Eau Sauvage.

  -> thank you !

agree  Colin Morley (X): I agree - collage is fine in UK English, too. Design is visible on google image search by the way

  -> Thank you Colin !

neutral  Tony M: I agree about 'collage', but have serious problems with 'sheets'... / On the face of it, sounds like some kind of 'mount' to me... but really need to know just what material is being used.

  -> so right Tony , but cannot come upon a better word as "feuille" is not specified (cardboard, paper ) maybe felt ?

neutral  Helen Shiner: On looking at the images, sheets just doesn't work very well in this case. But I agree with collage, though not really composition.

  -> what about "panels" ?

neutral  Travelin Ann: sheets does not work for me

layered collage framing the sketch in black

Explanation:
Since we are not sure what product/fabric/paper/etc. is being used, this would be a way around it. If Asker finds out what is used, it would be an easy matter to insert "in xxx" between collage and framing.
