parametering

Explanation:
I've come across this before, in connection with hydrological studies, and was told it is "parametering". It is part of the calculation process, nothing to do with the instruments themselves.

For example, different catchments will have different runoff coefficients, etc. (more or less water will reach the river from a given spot in a given time), and those coefficients will vary with seasons, depending on soil dryness, amount of grass cover, density of other vegetation, sun (evaporation), etc. The hydrologist's job includes working out relationships between all these things to obtain a representative algorithm that will tell him what he wants to know about the effect of rainfall events of different intensities, etc. Working out these relationships is "calage", or "parametering".
